Title: Sentinels of the Multiverse Game 3
Post by: catwhowalksbyhimself on September 20, 2014, 02:39:21 PM
Welcome one and all.  Whether you've played before or not, feel free to jump in and claim a hero.  I'll be happy to explain any rules I need to for anyone that's new, but it's really quite simple.

Our Current Lineup:

Deaths Jester as Expatriette
Glitch Girl as Redeemer Fanatic
Reepicheep as Greatest Legacy
Outcast as The Sentinels

In addition to the previous heroes, all remaining heroes from the game have been added, so choose well.

Team: Freedom Five
Nemesis: Unknown, Vengeance Five (Fright Train), Iron Legacy
A soldier with a suit of military designed power armor, Bunker is a bit like Iron Man, only he can't fly and has a lot more guns.  Switches between different modes to gain different abilities.

Team: Prime Wardens
Nemesis: Ambuscade
A gentile soul gifted with super strength, ancient warrior traditions, and immortality.  He's like the Hulk if the Hulk looked more like a normal person, was highly educated, and was an elementary school teacher for his day job.  Okay, he's nothing like Hulk, but he does like to smash.

Team: None
Nemsis: The Ennead
Finding the staff of the Egyptian sun god Ra, a humble archeaologist uses it to transform into Ra, god of the sun!  Yeah, he's Thor with fire powers, basically.

Nemesis: Matriarch, Vengeance Five(Friction), Iron Legacy

Former alien slave who escaped from the warlord Voss only to end up in the hands of suspicious humans.  He has powers over the weather and is also aquatic.  He even sometimes talks to the fishes.

Nemesis: Unknown, Vengeance Five (Proletariate), Iron Legacy
A lab accident has turned him into a creature of frost and cold.  As his cryo suit and chamber is quite expensive, he is forced by the government to join the Freedom Five in exchange for being allowed to live.  He isn't terribly thrilled about it.  The most complex hero in the game, he relies on hurting himself to damage his enemies.

Nemesis: The Dreamer
A powerful psychic from the future who has come to the past to save her younger self from the life of a lab rat that she suffered through.  Manipulates decks and offers buffs and debuffs rather that direct attacks.

Which version would you prefer,

Regular Expatriette
29 HP
Power: Play a card.

or

Dark Watch Expatriette
30 HP
Power: Increase Damage dealt by Expatriette by 1 until the end of your next turn.

Same deck and cards.

Hmmm....go with regular...she's what I played last time and am quite used to her.  Dark Watch version doesn't really seem to add much comparably.

Kinda leaning towards Nightmist or Fanatic.  One question: what exactly is meant by "self damaging hero"?

I think what it means is that there will be times that when you want to use a power, it will cost you some of your HP.  It's like having powers but using them puts a strain in your body.

That is correct, Nightmist is one of a few heroes whose abilities cost hp to use, essentially, although she also has several ways of healing herself back up again.  Actually, Fanatic is also a self damager, but to a lesser extent, and she can self resurrect.

Alright, options!

Both of those heroes have two alternate promo forms, so pick which of the three you'd like.  Same deck and cards, just the hp and base power change.

For Fanatic

Regular Fanatic
30 hp
Power: Fanatic deals 1 Target 1 Melee Damage and 1 Radiant Damage

Redeemer Fanatic
31 hp
Power: Fanatic regains 1 HP. Draw 1 card.

Prime Warden Fanatic
29 hp
Power: Fanatic deals herself 3 Radiant damage. Play the top card of your deck.  One hero may use a power now.

For Legacy, his three promos are actually different people in his family

Regular Legacy
32 hp
Power: Until the start of your next turn, increase Damage dealt by Hero Targets by 1.

His daughter, Youngest Legacy
30 hp
Power: Legacy deals 1 Target 3 Energy Damage

His father, the WWII Legacy--who the other heroes meet through time travel--Greatest Legacy
30 hp
Power: 1 Hero Regains 1 hp and may use a Power now.

You can check each hero's deck and powers here (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AprCZHVK0QvtdDVyV1VTTk54TEJ1RFBlSXlJV1p0SVE&usp=sharing#gid=1).

Ok. I think i'll try the Sentinels team this time. Not really sure how 4 characters can work using one deck but.... :)

Redeemer and Regular should both be fine for your first play.  Regular does a bit more damage off the bat until she gets her sword out, while Redeemer can fish for more powerful cards and do a bit more tanking.  Both are straightforward enough.

Pretty well.  Four character cards, four powers.  Lots of chaining and triggering effects.  They are pretty much this game's glass cannons, as they have very low hp and there are four of them, but can put out a lot of damage.  Fortunately one of them's a doctor and so is dedicated to healing.  They are hands down my favorite deck in the game.

Consequently, I have only one spot left, so first to speak up gets it.

Last seat's still open, if anyone wants it.

In the meantime, I present you with some villain options.  All the ones from the main game and first two expansion, to be precise.  Gloomweaver and Omnitron were both asked about before, but you needn't stick to that.  Also feel free to ask about any Nemeses that don't show up on this list.

Leader of a cult of superpowered people who believe themselves to be better than ordinary folks and deserving of their worship.  He attempt to create a superpowered dynasty lead to her greatest shame, however, the existence of her non-powered daughter, Expatriette.

And of course I want to battle my nemesis :)  But I don't want to monopolize the game unless y'all want to fight him too.  I'm still learning this system.

If you all don't come to a consensus, I could simply randomly choose from among the possibilities.  Some further information, though.

Blades the easiest villain in the game--most of the time.  On his front side, he wins the game if too many cards are in his trash, so you have to flip him by knocking down to 1 hitpoints quickly.

Gloomweaver's generally fairly easy, but games against him can be a bit long some times, although not to the same extent as a few others.  It depends on how quickly his relics come out, since you instantly win if you can kill all of them.  If they all come out, he flips and proceeds to wipe the heroes out, but I've yet to see that happen.

Apostate can be more challenging and is probably the hardest of the mediums, but about right for the third game out.  The more relics he puts out, the more powerful he is, so you have to keep with them as more get played.  He also has a couple cards that are evil version of some of Fanatic's cards.   One of those cards are pretty much useless when either one tries to use it on the other.  (destroys all the other side's cards that aren't relics.  Both have lots of relics.)

Still have one seat left, if anyone wants it.

At this moment, it looks like I will randomize between Blade, Glooweaver, and Apostate.  I'm still open to suggestions, however.  I'll leave it open for a bit longer, then I'll roll up a villain and continue on.

And I have completely chosen at random from the two discussed--Baron Blade!

This trailer for the video game version is also a pretty good into to the Baron Blade, so enjoy.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4CjyGYhV6B8

Now for the environments.  I'll throw nearly all of them out there for you, but as far as theming well with the villains, I'd suggest Megalopolis, Wagner Mars Base, Rook City, Pike Industrial, or the Time Cataclysm.  With Blade confronting a Legacy from the past, Time Cataclysm would fit pretty well thematically.  You can play with whatever one you like though and I'll find a story excuse to make it work.

Fanatic is flying over the city on patrol when she hears a disturbance.  Arriving at the edge of the city, she passes a stagecoach with no driver, its horses racing in fear as they try to outrun the raptor behind it.  Meanwhile a small group of cowboys is having a shootout against a heavily armed robot.  A rockets explodes out of the shadows, destroying the robot.  Fanatic quickly spots Expatriette taking cover behind a Greek statue.

As she lands, a mini-van pulls up, and the Sentinels pile out of it.  Having dealt with time rifts before, they were called in by the mayor to investigate.

As the six heroes gather together, another figure appears in a bright burst of light.

"Howdy.  You all seem to be having a bit of a problem here" Chronoranger states.  "What we have here is a time paradox about to happen.  Con says its a big one.  It's already messing up time bad, and it hasn't even happened yet.  We can stop it, but best keep your eyes peeled.  Whatever's about to happen should be pretty obvious."

Just then a small tear appears in the sky, and a figure falls out of it, that everyone immediately recognizes from all news footage.  It's Legacy's father, the Legacy from World War II.

"Yep, that ought to do it.  If he dies here, that would mess up time good and proper."

Legacy flies in a confusion for a moment, then flies further in toward the time disturbance.  As the heroes race to catch up, they see a floating fortress.  It is one of Baron Blade's Mobile Defense Platforms!  An energy beam is emerging from the top and the entire thing is enclosed in a glowing energy field.  A Hologram appears on the field's surface.

"Greeting, Legacy.  You can't possibly understand how delighted I am to see you here.  My father's notes, plus my own genius intellect, indicated that your brief disappearance during the war could only have resulted in your arrival here.  Finally, I will have you revenge on you for killing my father!  Or rather your would have, for you die here and now, if I have to bring down the continent to make it happen.  Which is exactly what I plan on doing.  Ha ha ha!"

QuoteArriving at the edge of the city, she passes a stagecoach with no driver, its horses racing in fear as they try to outrun the raptor behind it.  Meanwhile a small group of cowboys is having a shootout against a heavily armed robot.
(thinks "Hmmm... must be Tuesday.")

Fanatic dives towards the Baron.  "Yield, villain!  Or face the Wrath of Heaven itself!"

I use Brutal Censure against him (since I think he's the only target) and activate Redeem.

Does that latter part kick in before or after  Backlash Field activates?

Yes.

On the plus side, I think that means that the Backlash Field doesn't go into effect yet.

Forgot to mention that yes I do want to draw a card this round from Brutal Censure in addition to the one for Redeem.
Title: Re: Sentinels of the Multiverse Game 3

To answer your earlier quest, you play cards before you use powers, so the backlash field will kick in first.

Also, be it known that I have a card in my hand that will let me use a power every time the backlash field goes off, meaning I'll be able to eventually pay him back with interest every time he does that.

That knocks MDF down to 8 hp.

"Well, I know a bad guy when I see one." Legacy uses Bolster Allies to unify the heroes, "...and I know how to take sides!"

Will Idealist's Telekinetic Jab (2 psychic damage) have any effect on Baron's Mobile Defense Platform?

If yes, I'll use that and play Fling into Darkness to reduce it 3hp (2 pyschic + 3 melee), which should completely destroy it since Writhe is still active. Then draw a card to end my turn.

If it will have no effect, i'll just use Block to Reduce damage to all Hero targets, then draw a card to end my turn. (I'd rather not play and waste any of the cards i have at the moment.)

Damage is damage, so it would harm the platform.  You must, however, use a card before using a power, so that won't actually work.

Would you still like to just block and not play?

Except that you would be required to discard your entire hand not just that one card.  Doesn't matter.  DJ has volunteer, so I'll take him up on that.

Crushing Hallway is destroyed then.

For simplicy's sake, I'm not going to be typing out all the hps every time they change.  I'll just repost everyone's status instead.

Baron Blade plays

Hasten Doom: One-Shot--Baron Blade deals each Hero Target 2 Toxic Damage.Play the top card of the Villain deck.

He then plays

"Consider the Price of Victory": One-Shot--Each player discards 1 card.Baron Blade deals each Hero Target 2 Sonic Damage.Discard X cards from the top of the Villain deck, where X = the number of Hero cards discarded this turn.

So that's a total of 4 points of damage to all heroes (sorry, Sentinels) and everyone who still has a hand must pick one to discard.

Since there are four of us with cards, he discards the top 4.  That makes 6 in his discard pile.  9 more to go.

Except that you would be required to discard your entire hand not just that one card.  Doesn't matter.  DJ has volunteer, so I'll take him up on that.

 Sorry i guess i just read too quickly and misunderstood.

He then plays

"Consider the Price of Victory": One-Shot--Each player discards 1 card.Baron Blade deals each Hero Target 2 Sonic Damage.Discard X cards from the top of the Villain deck, where X = the number of Hero cards discarded this turn.

Since there are four of us with cards, he discards the top 4.  That makes 6 in his discard pile.  9 more to go.

That's the one card that i had wished wouldn't come up since it piles up his trash/discard pile. :banghead:

So that's a total of 4 points of damage to all heroes (sorry, Sentinels) and everyone who still has a hand must pick one to discard.

Tough choice, but I think I'll discard Danger Sense. Bring it, environment!

With the MDP almost destroyed, I'll play Take Down (On Baron Blade, if I have to specify). "This Jerry won't get a chance to strike back! He won't know what hit him, see?"

I'll then use Gung Ho for The Sentinels. What are the implications of that in terms of healing? If I have to specify an individual, it would be The Idealist.
Title: Re: Sentinels of the Multiverse Game 3
Post by: catwhowalksbyhimself on October 15, 2014, 11:12:01 PM
Yes, the Sentinels are four separate heroes, so you must pick one and only that particular one may use their power.  In terms of raw healing, Medico's the most efficient, as his power heals, so he'd heal for 1 and then could heal anyone for 3.  Idealist is fine two since it would allow idealist to kill the mdp, but would leave the Sentinels vulnerable to the Backlash field as they will be forced to hit Blade if they use several of their cards.

It's pretty much up to you though.
Title: Re: Sentinels of the Multiverse Game 3
Post by: Reepicheep on October 15, 2014, 11:34:37 PM
I'll stick with my choice of Idealist - we'd only be in that same situation later anyway, right?

In future, with a combination of my Gung Ho and Medico's power, we can easily counteract that Backlash effect.
Title: Re: Sentinels of the Multiverse Game 3
Post by: catwhowalksbyhimself on October 15, 2014, 11:54:45 PM
Backlash hurts the Sentinels more than it does anyone else due to their low hp, but we would indeed run into that next round anyway, unless we destroy it.

In any case, my bounty lets me shoot back at him whenever he backlashes, so it's all good.

So Idealist heals one and can now use a power.

"Thanks for the assist Legacy!"... though i'm not quite sure if Legacy's Gung Ho power was able to make use of Idealist's power to destroy the MDP yet.

If the MDP has already been destroyed, i'll play Positive Energy to heal up the injured heroes and deal Baron Blade 2 Psychic damage. Then i'll use Dr. Medico's power to heal Idealist from the Backlash. Then draw a card to end my turn.

If the MDP hasn't been destroyed yet, i think i'll still play Positive Energy since it can deal damage to each Villain target? And if i can decide the order of who gets damaged first thereby making it possible for me to damage Baron Blade then i'll stick to the same tactic afterwards ( Medico heals Idealist, Draw a card ).

The environment's effect has been destroyed. Those of us who still have some cards in hand need to discard only 1 card though, because of Baron Blade playing the card...Consider the price of Victory during his turn.

Assuming you used Idealists power during Legacy's turn to kill the mdp, then yes, it is gone before your turn even starts.

When the Backlash field goes off, I immediately get to use a power thanks to Ultimate target, so I deal Blade another 2 points of damage.

You draw

Spoiler

Team Communication: One-Shot--Draw 4 cards.You may play a card.

Fun mini game with that deck--trying to play four copies of Team Communications in the same turn.  I managed it only once, but have done 3 on several occasions.  Yes, that's a lot of cards.

I play Eye on the Prize and deal Blade 2 points of damage.  He Backlashes me for 3 points of damage, giving me an immediate power use.  I use my base power to hit him again for 2 points of damage.  Eye on the Prize lets me and draw and play a card.  I then play

Compounded Bow: Equipment--Power: Chrono-Ranger deals 1 Target 1 Projectile Damage and 1 Damage of a type of your choice.

I will use Compounded Bow's power to hit Blade for 2 and 2 points of damage and draw a card.

It is now the Environment's turn.

Time Cataclysm plays F.I.L.T.E.R. Spy: 5 hp,Anomaly,Agent--At the end of the Environment turn, this card deals the non-Agent Target with the second highest HP (H) minus 1 Toxic Damage.

Since Fanatic and Baron Blade are now tied for highest hp, I nominate him to be second highest.  Yes, we can do that.  In case of ties, players decide.  The Spy deals Blade 4 toxic damage.  Backlash hits the spy for 3 damage.  Since Blade has dealt damage I can use a power and use the bow to hit him for 2 and 2 points of damage.  Time traveling cyborg cowboys are pretty awesome, what can I say.

Devious Disruption: One-Shot--Each player may destroy any of their Equipment and/or Ongoing cards.Baron Blade deals each Hero Target X Lightning Damage, where X = 3 plus the number of Hero Ongoing and Equipment cards still in play.

We have four equipment and ongoing cards in play right now.  All four are very useful.  We should be able to knock him down to 0 hp and flip him if we can leave him on this side.  I'd be tempted to just take the 7 seven damage, as everyone can survive that, but I'm willing to destroy my contract and get it back later if need be.  Well lose 10+ points of damage this round to the Baron if I do though, but I think we'll be fine.

Expat and Fanatic need to decide if they wish to keep their equipment cards and everyone should weigh in one whether we should just take the damage or try to destroy it down to a reasonable level.  I'll go by the decision of the group.

You deal him 3 damage and he hits you back for 3.  This lets me hit him for 2 and 2 damage.

His Impulsar in ruins, a furious Baron Blade dons his power armor and returns to have his revenge on the heroes.

Baron Blade flips to his Vengeful Mad Scientist side and is restored to 30 hp.  All copies of Mobile Defense Platform are removed from his deck and trashed.

But before that, yes i will let Idealist use her power to attack Baron Blade thanks to Legacy's Gung Ho once more.

Then on my turn...i think the guys could use some more options. I'll play Team Communications and try to see what else we can do/play.

Cool.

Dr. Medico signals Writhe to flank and attack Baron Blade at the same time.

I'll play Horrifying Dichotomy.

Afterwards, I'll use Dr. Medico's healing power to whoever gets the backlash.

Then draw a card to end my turn.
Title: Re: Sentinels of the Multiverse Game 3
Post by: catwhowalksbyhimself on October 19, 2014, 01:55:12 PM
Medico deals damage first, so he takes the backlash and heal himself.  Since Blade deals damage, I'll hit him for 2 and 2 again for a total of 10 points of damage between the three of us.

You draw

Spoiler

Dark Delusions: One-Shot--If Writhe is active, he deals each Villain Target 2 Infernal Damage. If the Idealist is active, she deals 1 Target 3 Psychic Damage.

That makes it my turn. I will play Sudden Contract to Pull By Any Means out of my deck and play it on Blade.  This increases all damage dealt to Blade by 1.  I'm going to deal a total of 12 damage to him, leaving him at 4 and he'll hit me for 3.  I draw a card and and my turn.

The Environment plays Rift in Time which play Passing Tumbleweed, which doesn't do anything, then as soon as Blade hit the highest I hit him back for 6 and he goes down.

Heroes Win!

Yeah, that was fast.  Blade is usually pretty easy.  New game will be starting soonish. Uncle Yuan wants in the next one and he's at least as good a player as I am, so expect lot of fun shenaniguns from whatever character he plays.
