I for one would love to know when this little town came into existence, (and if it is in shape of a bat) Batman has been around a long time.

QuoteLos Angeles (E! Online) – It may be more the provenance of Superman, but this time it's Batman who's entered Bizarro World.

Following the Joker, the Riddler, the Penguin and Two-Face in the Caped Crusader's pantheon of sworn nemeses, Batman is now set to face off against none other than...uh, Batman.

The mayor of Batman, a small oil-producing town in Turkey, has filed suit against The Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan and Warner Bros., the studio behind the record-shattering blockbuster, looking for a cut in the film's royalties in exchange for using the city's name without permission.

Which begs the question of where hizzoner has been the past 70 years.

"There is only one Batman in the world," Mayor Huseyin Kalkan said, per Variety. "The American producers used the name of our city without informing us."

In addition to the name share, Kalkan claims the emotional distress that apparently comes from having one of the most indelible superheroes share a moniker with your town has led to several unsolved murders and a high suicide rate.

A WB rep, meanwhile, says the studio has seen reports of the legal action in the media but have yet to receive any court papers.

Holy nutjob, Batman.

A 494 km (307 mi) long pipeline transports crude oil from Batman to İskenderun. The railway track at nearby Kurtalan connects the city with Istanbul. There is also a regional airport near Batman.
Quote from: Wikipedia obv.Batman is an ongoing comic book series featuring the DC Comics hero of the same name. The character first appeared in Detective Comics #27, published in May 1939.

At first it seems this story can't be true. But maybe the Mayor is really honestly that stupid. I have a boss who's that stupid and sometimes I don't believe she's real.

Your quote would seem to indicate that the oldest refinery in Turkey was established in 1955, not that Batman Province was established in 1955, which is what the wikipedia page for Batman Province itself says.

Quote from: WikipediaThe province is important because of its oil reserves and production. The oil refinery was founded in 1955.

So it is quite possible the city's been around longer... that doesn't mean they have a case, but still.

Hmm, town suffers from jobs loss resulting in increased crime and suicides.  So how do we solve this as mayor?

We do something to get free publicity, that's what we do.

Yep, millions of people are now aware that there's a city named Batman, even though they had no idea about this before.

Nope, not a stupid mayor.

When was said small town founded?  Batman has been around for nearly 70 years.  Maybe Bob Kane has a case . . .

I guess now officialdom in The Lizard peninsula, UK; Blackrock, outside of Dublin; Red Lion, PA, Moonbeam, Ontario; and probably many others should kick their lawyers in their butts to take on the owners of Spider-Man; Superman; Voltron; X-Force; and whoever else created a character who, purely by happenstance, shares a name with a place that 99% of the world has never heard of.

Heh, that's a great idea Stumpy!  I know for a fact that there isn't a day goes by that the good citizens of Blackrock aren't filled with existential angst under the burden of being continually mistaken for Superman's enemy.  A good nonsense lawsuit would be the cure for what ails them.
