News? Views? Political Opinions? Scratch that.

Seriously though - The announcement came through, predicted release date 2010. I'm excited. Are you?

zuludelta

Not really excited about this.

Just one more reason for me to not get Windows Vista, though. With Windows 7 being released so soon after the release of Vista, I'd rather just make do with XP and wait for Windows 7 as my DirectX 10-capable OS of choice.

Anybody else think that Windows Vista is going to be this generation's Windows ME? (A rushed and "unnecessary" OS that serves as a cash-grab between legit OS releases).

Vista needed to be done, because it was the first complete re-write of the code in a long time. Unfortunately, it just doesn't have enough tangible functionality improvements to distinguish it from XP, so while it was a necessary project for M$ to do, there's really no reason for anybody to buy it. It's not necessarily a BAD operating system, it's just not worth the time and money.

Vista was X-Men 1: kind of slow, kind of boring, but you need it to lay the groundwork. Windows 7 can be X-Men 2: the origins have been told, and now you can just make a movie about fighting. Or... um... an OS with... features? Or something?

Ok, that metaphor kinda fell apart. I got nothin'.

I got no problems with Vista but also see no need t upgrade except for DirectX10.....What may happen is that once Linux finally takes off in home PCs Windows will may be nothing more than a gaming platform.

I purchased a new desktop machine since my old laptop was crummin' it up.

It just so happened that all of the computers at Best Buy came with Vista, which is why I have Vista. Windows XP would have cost too much extra to buy seperately.

How different can Windows 7 really be? To me, they've all just looked different, but since I'm just a regular PC user, I've never needed to get into the fancy interworkings. You know? I turn my PC on, run AIM, Photoshop, CoX, ect. They work great. I don't care to know much more beyond that.

To me, the Windows releases are basically just cosmetic changes. There have been security improvements, but I don't navigate dangerous sites, and I don't get viruses. *shrugs*

Let's all gather 'round the fire for a rousing rendition of the camp classic, "Let's Give Bill Gates All of Our Money".

Yeah, I can second that feeling... especially since I saw the "Bates 4000 Computer Upgrades" bit from The Onion Movie..

I'd post a link but it has swearing in the clip.. so if you want to see it yourself.. just search for "Bates 4000" on YouTube...

Unfortunately, that's not going to happen as long as the Linux community really has no idea how to communicate with the majority of average computer users.

The idea is that they are now aware that their code is so massively bloated that it takes up a gig just to boot the OS and has laberyinthine revisions that nobody even understands. They said that 7 will start again from scratch and I hope its true but in the meantime I'm a happy XP user as well. You think they will patch direct x 10 into XP? I'm sure there is nothing stopping them othern than hoping gamers go on to Vista...

You can get DirectX 10 for Windows XP....but I don't recommend it as it is not an official MS install.

I've heard talkings that Microsoft is looking to make Windows 7 the official OS of the future models of the very low-spec'ed Eee-PC. Coupled with the rumors that it's going to be a complete rewrite of the OS, it's looking like there's a possibility that Windows 7 could be a fairly streamlined piece of software.
I really don't have any major qualms about Vista though. I run it, and it's quite stable on my laptop, which only cost about $700 (which is damn cheap, especially compared to Macbooks). It's probably crashed less than a few people's computers I know of that run Leopard. *shrugs*
