So i may eventually need to buy a new computer. So far, I have been using windows xp sp1. I'm trying to decide which is more compatible with  :ff:. Is it windows xp sp2 or vista?

I have the 1.3 patch of course. But just wondering if there is any difference between using it with xp sp2 or vista.

i'm interested in this answer as well.
i have to reinstall windows.  i'm going to try to get a sp1 xp, but willing to try vista, if ppl say it's just as good.

From everything Ive heard, if you are running XP, you should be using SP2 (I am) as its more stable.

I know a few people who have Vista (and several more that are blatantly opposed to it) and the general consensus is that its a lot of "Oooo" and "Ahhhh" eye candy provided you have the hardware to run it, but unless it offers some specific feature you are after or need (or if you use some smaller older pieces of software that still are not compatible) sticking with XP would probably be just as advisable. There is a reason Microsoft was forced to offer a backwards downgrade to XP for customers  ;)

I personally have no interest or need to upgrade to Vista as everything I do works ok just fine under SP2, and I dont need the headache of having to work out all the issues of a new OS for no reason other than its available. Plus my hardware doesn't need the extra strain.

Personally, I was using SP1 on my former machine. This is quite probably a bad idea, though, due to the much bigger security risks. Mind you, I was very lucky and never had any apparent problem (using 3rd-party browser, firewall, etc, however). For the Windows partition (i.e. "gaming") on my Mac, guess I'll go the XP SP2 route, since Vista seems to bring excessive overhead for current generation machines. If XP SP1 or earlier becomes absolutely necessary (say, FFEdit 1, which AKFAIK is not compatible with SP2, 1.3 patch or not), a virtualisation solution will probably do, except for games, of course.

I say vista, I'm a complete vista lover. It's brilliant, looks great, fixes all your problems, makes life easier, really secure. I've not had any compatibility problems, although I know a few others have, I thoroughly recommend it.

So your saying you like Vista?

There are still problems with Vista driver compatability issues. Before you get Vista, do a Google search for the name and model number of your graphics card along with Vista and see if there are known issues.

Eventually you'll start to see games that only support Vista* ... but not for a while, given the current issues. So XP SP 2 is a safe bet. (As people have said, you want SP2 instead of SP1 because of the security fixes; the problem is that with SP2 you can't edit levels for the original FF.)

*Besides Microsoft products, I mean. If you really want to play Halo 2, buy a used XBox.

i was having issues with sp2 and freedom force so I uninstalled it and it is working fine now.

Just as a side note, I am running Windows XP SP1 and not having any trouble with it. As far as I can tell, there isn't a single thing in SP2 that I need or want, since MS releases updates for SP1 and I run a firewall anyway. My next PC will likely be a Vista box, just because it will be too hard to buy a legal copy of my current OS to install.

As best I can tell on the forums here, it looks like Vista runs FF and FFvT3R as well as SP2 does, which means pretty well with some exceptions to the FF modding tools.

I have windows XP pro SP2, from my own personal experience (and what I have built for customers in the past) Vista is okay with anything new or from a year or so prior to Vista, I am planning on building a new computer around April or May next year and it's going to be a dual boot...both XP and Vista, just purely because I know my older games and apps won't run in Vista, and use Vista for all the new stuff.

If you have XP2, is there a way to go back to SP1? Freedom Force is so wonky now that I just cant stand to play it. I miss it..

If your computer came installed with SP2, no. Though there may be ways to roll back, I'm assuming it'd be more intensive than just clicking "uninstall"

If you upgraded to SP2, then you can just click uninstall in the add/remove screen.

My Vista will run the Ctool for  :ff: but wont actually play the game.  Thats why I had to convert everything my cousin gave to  :ffvstr: when I first started playing.

I think MS peaked at Win2k.
It's still my favorite of their operating systems.
