Howdy guys, I don't know if you've heard or not, but 'ol Arthur has been canceled again.   It's a shame, especially seeing as that book was getting better.  Still, I'm not starting this topic to lament about this loss, but to get feedback from any Aquaman fans who frequent these boards.  I know Unko and Kssaints are both fans, and I imagine there are a few others too.  I've been working on my Aquaman outline for his EZScript run, and I could use some feedback.  I am changing a decent amount, so I'd especially like feedback on the changes.  For one thing, just about all of his villains except Black Manta and the Deep Six are getting a complete overhaul....along with most things.  If you have any interest in Aquaman and you think you might like to play through what I'm working on, let me know and I'll share the outline here for some feedback.  If you'd rather be surprised, don't reply, because there will be tons of spoilers.

Ares_God_of_War

is it the new Arthur Curry or the old Arthur "Orin" curry? I dont have decent comic shops where I live so I havent kept up.

BentonGrey

The book getting canceled is the new Aquaman (although the writer had hinted heavily that it was only a matter of time until the original came back), while my project is about the original.

Ares_God_of_War

That makes me kind of sad then if they were bringing back Orin.

UnkoMan

Yeah, even though I never bought it (haven't bought a new comic since about 2001) I was still interested in where it was going. Aquaman is that crazy Dweller of the Depths thing and there's a new guy who is JUST LIKE Aquaman, with the same name and everything... what's up with that?

Don't worry, though... Aquaman will soon be revamped and back. That's just what they do to him. It never stops, but it seems the lamer things tend to last longer (hello mr. pirate).

So, what is up with your take? Spill it, why not?

BentonGrey

Well, it's in a Word file, and I don't feel like fighting with it.  Since you're the only one who seems to be interested Unko, how about I email it to you?

Actually, I'm interested as well.

BentonGrey

PM me your email man, glad to hear it.

BentonGrey

Well, Unko read it and seemed to like it pretty well.  He and I did some pretty productive brain storming, and it really helped me flesh things out.  Would anyone else like to take a look?

Spe-Dog

Hook me up, please!  Long live, Orin/Arthur/Dweller....ah, you know who.

Agent

I'd like to have a look too, please.   :D

Since Aquaman fans seem to be congregating here, Mattel has some cool Aquaman and Black Manta figures coming out.  I don't usually by figures but I just might get all 3 of these.

Aquaman and Manta are on the bottom row.

Those figs look so sweet!  The Four Horsemen are amazing sculptors.  It's too bad their Superman figures were not that good, but all of these are amazing and I need that classic Aquaman!

BentonGrey

Some of those figures don't look so great to me, but most of them are pretty cool.  However........I NEED that Aquaman.  Haha, that is the most awesome Aquaman I've ever seen!  The classic one, is of course, the one I mean.  He looks so awesome, so regal, so completely B.A.  I will buy one of those, maybe not anytime soon, but eventually.  That Black Manta is pretty great too, much better than the previous figure I've seen.

daglob

I'm reading Showcase Presents Aquaman.

Damn, I miss him.

BentonGrey

Haha, I know what you mean.  Still......with the pretender's book getting canceled, I imagine the real Arthur will be back soon.  You know what's weird?  Aquaman is getting canceled because of low sales right?  Well, I went to buy the latest issue, and guess what?  Sold out.  That's right, as in, so many people wanted it, they didn't have enough.....crazy.

Spe-Dog

I just don't get why it had to be revamped anyway.  The creative team brought in some great ideas from the Sub Diego storyline on; it was top notch stuff and I was surprised that I thought in regard to quality it was one of the more consistant books DC was putting out at that time.  Companies have a habit of chasing off talent on their titles though for some reason.  Mark Waid and Grant Morrison on Superman?  Would have been awesome!  They didn't need Birthright; that would have brought the character back if they thought he needed a jumpstart.  The X-Men in the 90's are another example when they chased off Scott Lobdell amid complaints that the editors were trashing his stories or writing their own under his name.  Waid and Garney thrown off Captain America, only to be brought back.  When it comes to Aquaman it's about as bad.  Peter David was doing interesting things with the character as was Erik Larsen, but both were thrown off the character because DC didn't like what they were doing with the character.  The writers should be given more free reigh on ALL characters to try to expand them and their mythology in new ways; if the fans don't like it they will vote with their wallet and editorial will get the hint.  A creator shouldn't be forced off a book due to an editorial preference but only due to customer or fan preference.

That's a very good point.  DC's biggest mistake with Aquaman was taking Will Pfeiffer off the book right after he set up Sub Diego and put him on the Demon series (and we all know how that worked out).  I still wonder what the title would be like if Pfeiffer had been able to stay on board.

BentonGrey

I didn't read the Sub Diego storyline, but I have picked up a few issues after the fact, and I have to say that it was one of the best mainstream comics I've read in a LONG time.  I really wish he'd been able to at least wrap up his storylines.

BentonGrey

Hmm......I bagged myself MOST of the Sub-Diego run this last weekend before our trip, and I read them on the LOOOONG ride to Niagra.  I have to say, I'm a little disappointed.  Over-all, it's the second best Aquaman run I've ever read, the first being Aquaman's part in Justice.  (I haven't read anyone else who GETS Arthur the way those two do...or Black Manta, for that matter)  Still, it had a lot of great ideas, but everything seemed a little rushed.  There were often REALLY exciting covers, followed by little or no action within.  Fights that should have raged over two issues were wrapped up in two pages.  Combined with the super high level of violence and harsh language........I just felt like this team could have done better.  That being said...I still really enjoyed it.  I may actually get around to giving a by-issue review of this later.

Anyroad, on my own story front, I spent all weekend brainstorming and I think I have some promising new ideas.  These are thanks mostly to this run of Aquaman, so I don't take much credit for them.  Anyroad, I'm looking to add some more of Arthur's villains eventually, and I'd like a little help in identifying some of them.  In one issue of this run, Arthur faces down his entire Rogue's Gallery, and there are two faces who I don't recognize:

Can anyone tell me who the guy in the veil and brandishing the trident is?  He looks pretty awesome.  Even more awesome, is the fellow with the skull mask.  Who is he?

Panther_Gunn

"Image does not exist"

Might want to check that link.  I suspect the ... isn't supposed to be there, and there may be missing characters.

BentonGrey

Whoops!  Thanks PG, try it now.

BentonGrey

Howdy, I just recently figured out who the veiled fellow is, just in case anyone other than I am interested. His name is Piscator, and he apparently made his appearance in the Suicide Squad title.

I still don't know who the skull faced guy is, though.

catwhowalksbyhimself

Hmm. . . the link you provided doesn't actually go anywhere.  Maybe the article was just deleted?

BentonGrey

Curses, I always do that.  It's fixed not Cat.

BentonGrey

I just finished a much expanded outline, if anyone else is interested, let me know!

BentonGrey

Ohh, just in case anyone cares, I figured out who the other mystery character was.  He's the re-design of Charybdis, named Piranha-man.  I think if I include him, I'll stick with Charybdis........
