Bendis and Maleev are a team I really enjoy. I feel they make the heroes they work on into three dimensional people I can believe actually exist. I know a lot of people don't like Bendis... I guess they want more explosions or.. something. Anyway, while I was disappointed in Civil War, it's mischaracterization of key heroes and the ridiculous death of Cap as a result... I did likre this issue.

Bendis actually wrote a whole comic that defined Tony and Steve's motivations and articulated their thoughts and actions. And he didn't make either of them a villian.

Why couldn't he have written this before Civil War so the various writer's would have an idea of how humans think, instead of painting everybody as one dimensional Disney characters?

(sigh)

Well, at least this was a good comic.

I don't have much time but I just wanted to say that my issues with Bendis are simply about some of the choices he makes regarding characters and events, as well as pacing issues, and how he generally presents himself and his work.

However he can do great work, I remember back in the first few years of Ultimate Spider-Man I called him the best writer in comics.

I haven't read his work, I do hear a lot of negative things about him, however.  I will say this, the idea behind Civil War is a good one, it's an idea that has been explored before in much better comics, but it is good none the less.

The civel war (the short 'war' between heroes) was of limited interest to me. However I think the Superhero Registration Act and the Initiative act are fantastic ideas and I really hope Marvel manages to explore them properly. I'll also say that Tony Stark is filling his role in all this very well. Is it a mischaracterization? Thats a different, and complicated, matter.

I'm kinda interested in some examples... and also knowing what would be considered "much better comics" in contrast to the whole marvel universe.....

Podmark, what's up? Long time no see!  :)

I do think that many of Tony's actions in Civil War were out of character. For instance:

- Tony giving an okay to clone his friend, the god, Thor?!?
- Tony being okay with this clone killing someone and continuing on his course... ?
- Tony apparently combs his furniture for genetic samples for cloning!!?
- Tony makes veiled threats to Peter Parker about his wife and Aunt May!?!
- Tony uses super villians to capture heroes???
- Tony executes Happy Hogan!!!!!????!!!?

Don't get me wrong... many people were doing things their character wouldn't do:

- Reed becomes a mad scientist who doesn't even visit a badly beaten Johnny in the hospital?
- Cap allows Frank Castle on his team?
- Cap uses Tony's outstretched hand of friendship to sucker punch him (the handheld device to short out the armor) when Tony offered to talk about it?!?

Eh, I've read Iron Man since Tales of Suspense #39, which documents Tony and Steve before they even had their own book. These actions are out of character, even acknowledging that Tony is a pragmatist. He still has morals and principals. I just don't buy it.

Bendis should have written it. Just my opinion.  :(

Absofreakinlutely! Bendis hits the ball right outta the park just in this one issue. I love Mark Millar but he did a miserable job with Civil War!

Hey I'll agree that alot of character did things they would probably never would have. But talking about Stark, it's the role he has been placed in that I really like, personally leading the pro reg side, that pro government aspect of his character has been around for a while and it makes it a good fit. I couldn't honestly see a guy like Tony running for president. However it's the specific details of what he did that didn't come out well.
