Ok, twice now I've tried to install spider-man (JIK's mesh and c6's excellent skins).  Mind you I've downloaded quite a few meshes and skins now and they all work fine.  Spidey animates just fine in the screen to the right, but he's WAYYYYYYYYYY smaller than he should be.  Is this normal???  If so, will he appear that small in  :ff:??  If not, what might I be doing wrong?

That's normal.  He'll look fine when used in game.  The reason he's that small in the preview window is due to (I believe) the cords that are used to simulate his webswinging.  The viewer sees them as part of the mesh, and shinks/pulls back enough to fit it all on screen.  There are other meshes that behave in the same way, but are perfectly fine.

Yep, The Great Hunt uses that mesh, or a similar one, and he looks just fine in game.
