Go Castles and Crusades from Troll Lord publishing. You only need one book and it's 20 bucks. If you really want the monster book it's only 20 dollars as well but you could use 1E Monster Manual instead. Almost all D&D and AD&D stuff is compatible with C&C. Rumor has it that 4E will be similar to Star Wars Saga Edition RPG which is rumored to have "incorporated" several ideas from Castles and Crusades.

Well, it's been about 7-8 years since I bought my 3.0 books (never did by 3.5) and yet I'm not looking forward to buying another upgrade. I am curious what's changing, but I'm no early adopter.

Wow, 3rd edition sure didn't have the lifespan to it that 2nd edition did.  With the 3.5 books out midway through that time period, are they just going to reprint new versions of the books every 5 years from here on out?

I really want to dust off my RPG.NET account and go lurk just to listen to geeks scream about how TSR is ruining their lives all over again. Yeah, they took it a lot more personal than you guy's do over there.

Personally I have no real interest in it. I played D&D back in the day but both the setting and the rules didint work for me. Too many numbers, too many dice and every damn little piece of mythology had to be represented in the same world. You know there's something wrong when your attacked by a Kraken and a Kirin in the same 10 x 10 cave.

The big news is apparently the online content that is supposed to complement it.

D&D Insider will have character creation tools, DM tools including map builders and such, and a "virtual tabletop" for online RPG gaming.  I also gather that it is subscription based.  Which should be no surprise.

The other hook is that they claim to be streamlining some of the rules for easier/faster gameplay.

I'd wait and see how much of it they release in the OGL SRD.

Myself, haven't owned any of the manuals in years and don't plan to start now.

There is no  D&D since Unearthed  Arcana. I have spoken.

GhostMachine

I'm kind of over D & D. I was only really a fan of the Forgotten Realms and Ravenloft settings, anyway.

I didn't bother to get 3.5 and won't bother with 4. My favorite pen and paper RPG is Shadowrun, and I still haven't bothered to get the current edition of that, either, since I don't really play p&p anymore.

these are the only reasons I'm considering the 4e crap. if I can keep all my stuff accessible online and easily built without having to do a lot of initial footwork of my own.. I'm happy.

but I sure feel the pain of people that bought every stupid book that came out for 3.5

I just wish they'd drop eberron. what a crappy setting.

more ravenloft!

Gotta disagree about Eberron  -I'm in a campaign set there right now and it's a pretty cool setting.  Of course, it may depend on your GM.

As for 4.0 - well, I'm still not an early adopter, but I might pick stuff up eventually depening  on how it goes.  For now, I think my crew is going to stick to 3.0/3.5
