Golden Globe Nominations

I'm rather happy that Cate Blanchett got both a lead actress nomination for "The Golden Age" and a supporting actress nomination for "I'm Not There".  I'm also surprised that Tim Burton's Sweeny Todd got the nominations it did.  Surprised in a pleased way not in a WTF  way. 

I tend to give more credibility to The Golden Globes than to The Oscars.

I would go to see Cate Blanchett act the part of a door knob.  I do believe that she's one of the best actors alive.  "I'm Not There" is worth seeing for her performance alone.

Although it doesn't open until Christmas Day (!), the advance-screening reviews for "Sweeney Todd" are uniformly and overwhelmingly strong (see the Rotten Tomatoes collection here).  This is definitely one to keep an eye on. :cool:

We just had a preview screening of Sweeney Todd here at USC last week, cuz some alumni worked on it..

Sadly, I had a final, but I heard it was absolutely fantastic. And this was from usually snooty film students. :P

I agree on Blanchett. 

My surprise regarding Sweeny Todd is moreso because most of Burton's movies don't get a lot of action at The Golden Globes or The Oscars.  And it got nominations in all that I noticed.

The Oscars (and the Grammy Awards, as well) are a joke and have been for a long time.

I'm glad to see House M.D. and Hugh Laurie nominated, but I doubt either will win, unfortunately.

While I realize the last 3 months of the year is traditional Oscar Bait time, I think most film awards would have a lot more credibility with me if they would remember that the "year" includes months prior to October as well...  :banghead:

Oh I know they do... It's "Awards Season!" (Yay)
And its true the more important and critically acclaimed movies get lumped in there for that reason.

But its one of those things where I think it becomes this self fulfilling echo chamber.
Good films come out at the end of the year...therefore if a movie is released at the end of the year, it must be good...
Its like the critics and voting members are like Pavlov's dog.
A good movie that comes out in April is good.
A good movie that comes out in November must be GOOD, cause it came out in November and not April!

This doesn't mean I think Resident Evil Extinction is missing some kind of acclaim.
I just think its a lazy narrow minded view of things and really isn't representative of the quality of film for a given year.

Actually, there are occasional exceptions to that rule.  "Crash" was released in early May 2005 and won several nomination at the 2006 Oscars.  In addition to the nominations, it won Best Picture and Best Screenplay.

But Crash wasn't anywhere near the best at anything. In my opinion it was one of the most overly praised cases of guilt influencing opinion ever.... But I get what you're saying. Both Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark (Curse you Chariots of Fire!) were nominated in their day, and they were both May movies

I second this nomination (I was just kidding about Extinctions soundtrack, it's just weird repetetive techno music). "Dare"  and "The Touch" are both awesome songs. I loved how the only special feature on the older DVD was the guy talking about the soundtrack and having really crazy glasses. Not to mention Weird Al's "Dare to be Stupid" was actually in the movie and it fit... I guess...

The new Transformers (Which I say was awesome. And I was ready to hate it) had an awesome soundtrack as well. And following the tradition of almost every super hero movie to come out in the past 5 years, It even had an awesome Taking Back Sunday song that wasn't in the movie at all. Which is ok, because they're basically the best band ever!

I think you all are crazy.
Id watch Crash 10 times again before Transformers (the new one)...
But then I am the minority Transformers (the new one) hater around here.

And as for soundtracks...Come on!
Every Superhero movie in the last 2 decades has been a riff of Danny Elfman's Batman score (He himself scored at least half of em I think). Every Jerry Bruckheimer produced film has the same Hans Zimmer Synth symphonic thing.

Soundtracks seem to be more assembly line nowadays. Digital recording has made piecing them together out of existing themes way easier. Even old standbys like John Williams seem like they are on Auto Pilot....Not that there weren't crappy soundtracks in all decades, they just seem to have less personality today. Big, Bombastic and Bland.

And any soundtrack that features stand alone songs "Inspired by" or not in the movie is not a soundtrack, its a record company marketing ploy (regardless whether you like the band or not).

Plus as for my opinion of "Best Of" anything... nothing that is newer than 5 years is allowed on any of my best of lists. Its too fresh, It doesn't have the benefit of time to temper the opinion. After 5 years if something still holds up, then it has something.
