Cell Phone Ringtone Question?

Hey there! Most people here are more "in the know" about the net and technology than me. I just got a new cell phone, and the prepackaged rings are terrible. I checked on the Sprint site, and their ringtone section sends you to another site, where you pay monthly to keep the ringtone. That's just crazy.

Anyone know any sites with some good rintones that can be downloaded to my phone for one price, forever? (I have Sprint and the phone is a Katana)

Thanks in advance for any help!  :)

most modern phones allow a connection direct to a pc, and you can use mp3's to get them.

Yeah.  Get yourself a phone to USB cable and the appropriate drivers.  Then you can visit the oodles of FREE ringtone and graphics sites to download to your PC, then upload to your phone.  Not only do you NOT pay for the tones, but you won't pay for downloading it either.  If I were to download directly to my phone any ringtones, they'd charge for the tones AND charge for the bandwidth download.  NOT GONNA HAPPEN.  As it is, my phone's customized and it cost me all of 5 bucks for the cable.  Oh, and the nice thing is I can manage my phonebook and tranfer my camera's images to my comp as well.

Out of curiosity, where would such sites of free ringtones be found?  Are they easily Google-able, or does it take some digging?  I know I'd appreciate a link or two to some recommended ones.  Are there any programs what will allow one to make their own ringtones from other sound files?

If your phone can use MIDI files as ringtones (as my somewhat older Motorola phone can), there are absolute droves of free MIDI file sites on the web.

Yup, easily "Google-able".  I just searched for "Free Ringtones".  One of my favorites is http://www.phonezoo.com/Welcome.do  It has a mini program to create and share tones through their site.

Thank you for the help everybody. It is greatly appreciated. Now I guess I just have to get one of those USB cables. Is that something I have to buy at my Sprint store, or is it something I can get cheaper somewhere else?

Uncle Yuan

You don't have to go to the Sprint store, although obviously it must be compatible with your phone base.  My Razr has a mini-USB port, so obviously that's easier than a phone that needs a specialized connection.

Don't get it via your Sprint store.  You are likely going to be asked to pay upwards of $30 for a little cable.  (That's what cingular wanted me to pay for mine.)  Instead go on ebay, look up USB cable and the model of your phone.  You should find at least a hundred listings ranging from .01 to .99 for the cable & driver disc, plus about $4.00 shipping.  I bought mine via ebay for .99 + $3.95 shipping.  I can probably look up the seller if you want to go that route.  He was fast and the cable works great.
