Frustrated with modding

Everyone makes it seem so easy, so it must be, but I can't figure out how to get any custom meshes or skins into my FFvTR game.  I downloaded tons of meshes, tried extracting them to every folder, but none show up in the "Custom Characters" menu in game.  The only ones that are in there are "Capeman, Accessorygirl, Actiongirl, and Nocapeman". I also downloaded Freedom Force Editor, but when I try to run it, it says I don't have Freedom Force installed.

I've been looking around the net for the past two days, and most tutorials don't start with the basics.  Please, if anyone can point me in the right direction, I'd love to take advantage of the creative aspect of the game.  I just want to know how to get custom skins and meshes to work!  :banghead:

Ok, I just sort of got the generic_hero to work.  I added the generic_hero folder into the "characters" folder that also contains the four I mentioned above (Capeman, Nocapeman, etc.) and it actually showed up in the menu, but when I selected it, it showed up as a big white cube with a big "X" on each of the sides.  Am I getting closer, or was that just a random fluke???

that will help you with installing meshes and skins. Generic male (or male_basic, I believe?) Doesnt work in FFVTTR. It's one of the very few unconvertable meshes.

That link was helpful.  I think I'm starting to get it!

Some important links:

1) Freedom Force Editor for FFVTTR:

http://www.freedomfans.com/ffvttr/downloads.php
(the one for FF1 won't work in FFVTTR)

2) Nif Converter
http://www.alexff.com/eznif.php
just run the program, navigate to the character nif and keyframes and hit "convert".  should eliminate the big block with an "x" problem.  works on just about all meshes

3) check out the FAQ in the technical assistance link here (at Freedom Reborn) for more advanced Qz & A
http://freedomreborn.net/archive/index.php?topic=41006.0

4) the wiki site (link on previous post) has lots of newbie info as well.

good luck!

ps--modding is not all that "easy", but's it's also not too hard to learn!

I think the main problem you're running into is using FF stuff in FFvTTR.  Follow those links, and I think you'll have it.
