Title: Seasons Greetings from Aratak. Danger Room Still Crashing?
Post by: Aratak on December 17, 2008, 06:15:49 PM
Hi there, folks. Happy holidays and long time no see.

Glad to see this fine community still about. My times spent here and playing this fine old game are all happy memories.

I still have the old warhorse original Freedom Force sitting there on my C Drive with 10.7 GB of characters on it. I cannot bear the thought of removing all those carefully unpacked and organized files. Tsk.

Did anyone ever come up with any fixes for the Danger Room crashes? After I allowed the Microsoft update, we've never managed to get the game to play with any stability. Like Panzer General 2 and Civilization 3, I have a difficult time letting this fine old game go, and I'd love to get enough stability to run some danger room battles. Can anyone direct me to a thread that has any ideas?

Best wishes,
Mr. Aratak

Mr. A!
Happy hols to you too.
As to your question, I dunno. I think it varies from system to system. I never had many problems myself with SP2 and the 1.3 ff patch, but I know others have.

Whoa! Mr Aratak!
The 1.3 update seemed to sorta work - character tool would crash unpredictably.
When my HD crashed I only re-installed 3R.

Just to clarify slightly, I think the FF DR crash issue is specific to the 1.3 patch. In other words, if you apply the patch, the instability arises, whether or not you are running SP2. Of course, if you are running SP2, you are probably running the patch...

That said, I am pretty sure you could minimize the crashes by not leaving the DR and coming back. In other words, if you planned on playing in the Danger Room, don't go back to the main menu in between DR sessions as that seemed to be when the instability manifested. For me, it never happened all the time, so just keeping the swaps down made things acceptable.
