Title: Long time skinner, first time skoper.
Post by: murs47 on December 09, 2008, 02:29:40 PM
Howdy all, I've been wanting to give skoping a try. Where's a good place to read up on tutorials?

Also, where can I download the latest nifskope?

Sorry for the newbie questions. Thanks much in advance. ^_^

You can download the latest Nifskope here: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=149157&package_id=170735

I actually use the previous version, .15, but that's inconsequential.

The tutorial to use is on the frwiki: http://frworld.wikispaces.com/NifSkope

Read the introduction and the interface sections, so you can get used to the terms used during Nifskope. From there, go to the Basics section. That will teach you how to do things like hiding individual pieces or how to rename a skin piece. (You can change something like male_basic into male_basic_afro, for example). Get acclimated that way.. THEN go into the cloning section, where you take a piece from one mesh and add it to another.

It will seem very daunting at first, but believe me.. it's not as hard as it first seems. If I can do it, anyone can. :)

Yes...As LP says...It's a bit daunting at first, but even I'm starting to get it and I'm terrible with tech-stuff.

Okay, I'm trying out Stlye's tutorial and I'm getting this pop-up message when I Block>Paste Branch a piece from the Silent Scout mesh onto the vxGreen Arrow mesh.

When I press continue I get this error message:

""invalid array size for array" "Extra Data List""
"array "Extra Data List" invalid"

What am I doing wrong?

you're trying to move a piece from a ff1 nif to a FFVTTR mesh or vice versa. Convert the piece that's causing the problem and all should be well.

and if it doesn't work, it's Shirley's fault.

Yeah when you skope you've to to work with either all unconverted meshes (which means you can't use any of Rens FF2 only meshes) or only converted meshes (which means you have to convert everything before skoping).

Murs, I got the same message a number of times, before I realized I forgot to convert one of my meshes...LOL.

I have another question. The "male_basic" textures of one of my skopes has a purple layer over it. I can see the faint hint of the actual texture. The "extras" textures are showing up just fine. What am I doing wrong, again?

Usually thats a missing texture of some kind (refl, glow etc...)

If you open it in nifskope you can select the mesh and expand the texture block. It should list all the textures that are associated with that mesh. Then you can either remove it (not the ideal method unless you have a specific reason to), or add that texture to the skins folder (either as a legitimate texture or as an all black image to effectively turn it off).

Just to expand on this, this goes for any individual mesh piece, not just "male_basic". You can make a very small, 32x32 black image as "male_basic_refl" and "male_basic_glow" (for example) and it should be good to go.
