Wow!  Wasn't expecting that.  One of the great sci-fi writers.

One of the news reports I heard last night said Crichton "unexpectedly" died of cancer. I guess that's not really accurate, since he knew what was going on. But, there is a certain literary justice in it. I recall reading a few a Crichton's novels (e.g. Andromeda Strain, Sphere, Jurassic Park) where the plot is zipping along and then - blam! - it's suddenly over. At first it struck me as odd, but then I came to sort of like the idea that I'd be reading along and the world is falling apart and two pages later it's all resolved. I used to say he should print the books with extra blank pages at the end so you couldn't be sure when it was going to end.

Anyway, I enjoyed his stuff and he probably had a lot more in him. It's too bad he went this soon.

I remember debating with one of my English teachers about the neat endings to Crichton's novels....I called him a boys scout, because one of the rules of boys scouts is to clean up your mess.

I didn't expect that. But then, I'm sure most people didn't.

A man who created interesting fiction, and there are few higher callings.  I will miss his work.
