Title: Video Game Food Ideas for a Party?
Post by: Pyroclasm on September 27, 2008, 01:49:37 PM
Hi guys.  This year our Halloween party's theme is Video Games.  Everyone is supposed to dress up as a character whose origin is from a video game.
Anyways, we are trying to come up with ideas for video game themed foods, so I thought I'd ask you guys for some additional ideas.  We're having Power-Up soda (Super Mario is on the label) and another one call "T-Virus" (Resident Evil).  I thought of making angel food muffins with the lid iced in green or red with white polka-dots (Super Mario mushrooms).  I'm hoping for food ideas that aren't sweets, but those are still good too.  If you can link to a recipe, or a picture and indicate what game it would reference, that would be a big help.  Also, drink ideas are welcome too, as most of the party guests love to get smashed. ;)

A main dish could be the world famous Westfall Stew (http://www.wowhead.com/?spell=2543), dunno what you'd do about the murloc eyes :P but any meaty stew would be fine.
If you could find a way to spice up ordinary milk (dunno how I'm not a big milk drinker) it could be MooMoo Milk

white cheddar cheeze-its = PacMan dots

chicken wings = Frogger legs

cornish hens = Duck Hunt victims

Burger Time burgers, hot dogs & fried eggs (with pepper, of course)?

I may think of more....

Some ideas:

- Sauteed portobello mushrooms (or Shiitake mushrooms, if portobollos are too big and hearty), with the caps embellished with red dots (food-colouring): can be used to represent the embiggening mushrooms in Super Mario Bros. Or you can use some actual magic mushrooms for a real size-altering experience

- Edible flowers such as cauliflower (or if you and your guests are more adventurous, palate-wise, some more obvious flower looking edible blossoms such as young dandelion or garlic blossoms): stand in for the Fire Flower power-up in Super Mario Bros. Here's a list of edible flowers (http://whatscookingamerica.net/EdibleFlowers/EdibleFlowersMain.htm).

- Also, if you or somebody else involved in the party preparations is into decorative baking, these cakes/cookies (http://www.winnersusedrugs.com/2008/05/tastiest-video-game-inspired-treats.html) might give you some neat design ideas.

- Chocolate coins: Again, a nod to Super Mario Bros.

What I found from the responses I've gotten here and on another site, is with the exception of Lunarman's suggestion, almost everyone went for old school 80's references.  Maybe this is good information for you to know, but most of the guests are in their mid-20's.  Some of the cool 80's references would be lost on them. LOL

The suggestions have been great.  I'm making a list and then sometime in Oct. the "party committee" will decide.
Anyone have any ideas for alcoholic beverages?  Known recipes or even presentation ideas work.

You can make Tetris block-shaped ice cubes for your drinks. There are custom ice trays (http://www.uberreview.com/2008/07/tetris-ice-cube-tray.htm) for doing exactly that but it's easy enough to improvise with some rectangular jello trays and some plastic uprights. Barring that, you can also just get some regular ice cubes and stick them together to make the Tetris block shapes (to make the cubes stick together, warm one of the cube's faces so that it slightly melts, put it flush against another cube, and then quickly put them in the freezer to make them stick).

Another thing you can do is to use old CD games as drink coasters. I used to use my old, scratched PS1 games as beer coasters when we used to have gaming nights in college.

Hmm, there must be some star wars food.

some websearching seems to sugget that Luke Skywalker ate a long chocolate cigar at some point. You could try melting some chocolate and putting it in a mould to get a shape like that.

QuoteDon't forget Bantha Burgers, Bantha Steaks, & Dewback Ribs. Then there's Bark Lizard, Strained Keebadas, Mubasa Hock, Braised Fork Tarts, Scurrier Tips, Hot Chubas, Sand Gizzars, Boga Noga, Bantha Blaster, Tatooni Junko, Yatooni Boska, Larvae, Horstberry Cider, Wampa Milk, Orange Montra Fruit, Draka Nuts, Jingloo Melon, Dewback Bacon, Kabber Eggs, Vries, Nerf Baby-back Ribs, Spider Sticks, Spicy Spider Chowder, Head of Zerg, Shaduva Berries, Salamander Sticks, Harmon Kizzlebrew, Zdrinbagh, Yagai Spiced Dindra, Ukian Spring-fruit Pod Delight, Seasoned Enyak Bobs over Teerlop-zikody, Tenbah Squid Pie with Roosha Topping, Spidervine Tea, Shim-bay Crispa, & Strackleberry Nuts.

On a random note, liver looks a lot like that wierd alien thing that slimes along ceilings in Doom 3

as a note, as a male in his early 20'2, 80's references are certainly not lost on me :P

Star Wars or anything else whose origin is NOT video games, doesn't count. ;)  The subject has to have started it's existence as a game first.

With our group, we can't play "Totally 80's" Trivial Pursuit.  People stare blankly when asked some of the most basic 80's pop references.  Don't know if it has something to do with most of them being math and computer people, but they tend to have no problem with our "90's" edition.  I think most everything suggested is "classic" enough to be known, but I thought I should mention the age group so the references didn't get too obscure. :)
