Title: New "The Spirit" Trailer
Post by: Mowgli on July 16, 2008, 01:08:25 PM
This doesn't look very good to me...

http://www.filmschoolrejects.com/news/new-disappointing-trailer-for-the-spirit-gets-leaked.php

I'm not one to judge a film before I've seen it, especially since I really liked Sin City and 300. But perhaps in this case, too much is too much. I haven't read tons of Spirit, but from what I have read.... this doesn;t make me think of that comic.

A lot of it looks like the credits to a Bond film.

Oh, its definitely going to be crap. There are pictures of Samuel L. Jackson as the Octopus out there and the costume is completely idiotic looking. And if you know anything about the Octopus character, him actually being shown is a major violation, let alone his costume making him look like an imbecile. (In the Spirit strip, the only part of the Octopus ever shown were his gloves, but its implied he's more or less an evil duplicate of the Spirit in appearance)

Heck, they didn't even get the Spirit's look right; he doesn't dress in black!!

Well I likethe music...

And that's about it.

I've got 15 of the Spirit hardcovers so you could say I'm a bit of a fan and like Mowgli said, this doesn't remind me of any of them.

It's a comic-booky crime story, but it's not the Spirit.

What a shame.

I didn't go to the theaters to see either Sin City or 300 and it looks like The Spirit will join them.

Its looking terrible so far, and I'm generally pretty optimistic about comic films :(

Why is Frank Miller DIRECTING a movie in the first place? Just because he co-directed a frame-for-frame adaptation of his own comic with another ultra-experienced director? I also have to wonder who thought it would be a good idea to shoot the film in the same style as Sin City?

This reminds me of when they let David Goyer direct Blade 3....

It does seem to fail considerably at being the Spirit... Even though my knowledge of the character is more in passing (gotta remedy that).

But while it may fail on one level, Im looking forward to it possibly succeeding on another.
I really dig the whole B/W Style over substance Sin City noir thing.

I generally miss noir... Even if all we can get is the Frank Miller Green Screen CGI kind -- I'll still take it.

I usually play devils advocate and this must be the only CGI heavy comic book movie that I just cant defend. I mean it looks like a mix between sin city and a cinemax softcore porn. Oh well...

so far I'm not impressed. It just looks weird. Especially the parts with Samuel L. Jackson...

Hmmm....well, you can make any film look good or bad with a trailer, but I'm with those who are leaning towards 'Not Very Spirit-y'.
You should never see the Octopus except for his gloves, that's just non-negotiable.
And Eisner was the King of Noir, of lighting, of mood and storytelling. Take his work, film it scene for scene, shot for shot, shadow for shadow, or film some other masked detective like Green Hornet or Midnight.
Miller has been involved with some films I've liked, so I'll be keen to see this, but I want Eisner's sensibilities here more than Miller's.

As I've said before... it's not going to really be The Spirit. It's going to be Sin City 2.

And as stupid as that is (why use such a well recognized and loved character who really only has one interpretation?) I will say that it still may be an entertaining movie. As long as you pretend it isn't The Spirit.
