Title: Super weird dream... (very off topic)
Post by: lugaru on July 16, 2008, 04:06:55 AM
So I wake up at 6:10 to use the rest room and decide to go back to sleep even though I only have a few minutes before my alarm goes off at 6:30.

So I had this insane dream with an abandoned goverment highschool like the ones you see in Mexico with multiple two story buildings more instead of the american ones that are more like one solid structure. For some reason we had been hiding out and been acting paranoid for some time and then these WAVES of rioters (essentially young student looking poeple with sticks) show up and we are running from them. During the dream I run, I hide, I get in stick fights and even encounter some romance. I think the deal with the rioters is that they where crop dusted with some crazy drug that made them super violent and they where roaming around in bands just beating people up and attacking them.

Here comes the interesting part:

Then I wake up but I cant move and I realize I'm still asleep. So I wake up again and my girlfriend is next to me but like talking in this super creepy super low voice and I cant feel a lot of my body. So I wake up again and the cat is floating in the middle of the room (like a graphics glitch) so I know I'm still asleep. I wake up again and sit at my computer and I can see myself lying in bed on the monitor. Then my alarm goes off and I finally wake up for real. Creepy, no?

Oh, and at this point it's 6:30, like 20 minutes latter.

That's describing a night terror, which takes place when your eyes are physically open, but you aren't completely awake, so what you are actually seeing is mixed with dreams.  Many times, it's far creepier.

It is odd that it happened so quickly, and so late in the day, though.

So that's what happened when I thought that I was in a car that was going off the rails and then sinking into the ocean.  Or the time when I forgot all of my memories and thought I was climbing floating stone steps over an ocean for 5-10 seconds.

Uh, no, not likely.  You seem to be describing nightmares.  Night terrors are quite different.  Night terrors take place, or start in, your bedroom, or wherever you are sleeping.  You are paralyzed normally and can't move.  Sometimes you feel a pressure on your chest, like something is sitting on you, and often there may be actually a monster or demon you see on your chest.  (This is really just the paralysis)

The reason for night terrors is your body is partly awake but cannot, for whatever reason, wake completely.  Your body normally paralyses itself when in deep sleep and the body has not yet released it paralysis.  You are both awake and dreaming at the same time causing real things around you (such as lugaru's cat and girlfriend) to be seem, but with wierd dreamlike, often frightening changes over them.

Even though Cat seems to have all these facts and a plethora of information that might be logical and make sense and be all credible and what not...

..I'm gonna stick with USAgent in goin with the green cheese.

I suppose I got it wrong then. I thought you meant that a night terror is when you're awake but still kind of sleepy.  When I had those "dreams" that I described, I was awake, but a bit tired.  Still, what I had probably wasn't a night terror.

I've had totally by the textbook night terrors at least once... it involved me being paralyzed and knowing there was something in the room with me and that I couldent move my body to look at it so I was super freaking out. These where more like my mind being aware of night terrors and crafting crazy variations on the theme, like "well you know what a night terror is so let's have a weird dream about night terrors". Thank god there was no "hag on my chest" in the dream though, that stuff just freaks me out.

Or even worse was a dream a friend had where some invisible force was trying to smother him to death. After a long time he was able to escape and fall asleep in his parents bed... only to wake up again in his own bed being smothered to death. Finally he fell out of bed and woke up for real but the idea of going through that always freaks me out...

Night terrors is what made me interested in studying lucid dreaming. Bought a course in it several years ago online and have had great success with it. Like any skill though if you don't practice you lose the ability. You want to experience what it must feel like to be a god, study lucid dreaming.

I've had "night terrors" at least twice that I vividly remember.  Once when i was a child (and that may have still been a nightmare) and once back in 2006 shortly after a new roommate moved into the apartment.  At first, I thought I was being choked by the roommate.  Then I realized there was nothing there and was not sure what happened.  I closed my eyes again and woke back up a few minutes later.

I had a night terror once where I was at a friends house and I thought he was holding me down and drawing a penis on my face with a sharpie... The crazy thing is, I seriously woke up after that and there was a penis drawn on my face!

After having a couple of night terrors I was able to bring them on at will when i was young.  I don't do it anymore now.

Anyway...what would Fraeud say about "young people," "sticks," and "romance."   :o

Actually it was traced...

thalaw2: yeah, dont get me started on heavy handed sexual tones... I remember hitting on one of the people (who was in fact my own g.f.'s older and very attractive actress sister) to avoid getting a beating and let's just say it worked. Next time I tried it I was almost shot with a rifle, so that's the only time in the dream I defended myself with smooching.

And yeah, I'm glad my g.f. doesent read this forum.

Psst!  Psst!  lugaru!  Bagaloo is Brumford.  You've not yet awakened, my Percival.  The brie and Brumford are overcooked, and I still haven't found what I'm looking for...

ow_tiobe_sb
What does that mean, anyway?  Why can't he just sign his name and let it be?
