Title: Who owns the rights?
Post by: medinnus on July 09, 2008, 09:51:07 AM
With Irrational having split up, who owns the FF rights now?

Thats Freedom Force, not Fantastic Four, just in case someone was gonna be silly...

I recall there were a series of buy outs, but as far as I remember, 2K games owns the rights. I may be wrong though

And trust me, someone is going to be silly regardless  ;)

My guess is that Ken Levine owns it.

Irrational Games didn't "split up." They were bought out by 2K Games, which is itself owned by Take-Two Interactive. Unless Ken Levine had a special arrangement with Irrational, which is possible because he was both the creator of FF and a founder of IG, all the intellectual property that was created at Irrational Games would be the property of Take-Two Interactive now.

During an interview with PC Gamer (when bioshock came out)they asked about Freedom Force and if there will be another.  Ken Levine said that if they feel a need for one they will go back and make another FF game.

They will do it as soon as it is economically viable, much like an Army of Darkness aka Evil Dead sequel. It's just that these things cost a lot of money and maybe it would sell well with a sunburst that say's "From the creator of Bioshock" but freedom force itself (while one of my favorite all time games) is not that well known a franchise outside of the circle of PC game critics.

The FF engine may see the light of day again anyways.  Rumor has it, they are working on a new X-Com game.  If they went real-time combat, the FF engine would be perfect.  The fanboys would be upset though.  Even so, some elements of the graphics engine may very well be used.

Makes my mouth water.  I still think that FF wasn't as good as X-Com Apoc..  Don't get me wrong...FF has a better engine but X-Com was more engrossing.

Wasn't the FFVTTR Graphics engine just licensed from Gamebryo?

The graphics format part was, but the actually way it all came together was theirs.
