Title: Opera buzz
Post by: Glitch Girl on July 06, 2008, 09:38:33 AM
Very very odd, but somehow in a strange way, it kinda makes sense.

The Fly: The Opera (http://www.theflytheopera.com/)

David Cronenberg directs, Plácido Domingo conducts.  There's a matching I never thought I'd see.

that's almost as weird as making Spider-Man a Broadway musical. Next thing you know they'll be making Legally Blonde and Brokeback Mountain Broadway musicals too!

oh...wait...

Interesting.

Broadway and Stage is doing some curious things to catch a new crowd.

I actually have a copy of the Superman Broadway musical, can't seem to find anything on the spider-man one.  Even have same samples of music for a proposed Batman musical from Jim Steinman.

Most interesting things I've seen lately were Xanadu --- which actually looks like A lot of fun to go see.  I hope they tour sometime.  Something more for us 80's geeks, a Last Starfighter musical and the musics not half bad.  Check it out  here (http://www.myspace.com/TheLastStarfighterANewMusical).

What's the point? Movies are strictly better than all forms of live theater...

I love it! Opera has used mythology as its subject since...well, the dawn of opera! The Fly has shown itself to be a modern story with legs (sorry, couldn't resist  :P), so, to me, this doesn't seem "new" at all.  It would be less strange than when the lead soprano did an erotic dance and then made love to the severed head of John the Baptist in Strauss' Salome in 1905.  We get endless repetitions of Tosca and Don Giovanni - let's have the The Fly!  I can't wait to hear what the aria "Help Me!" sounds like.  :D
