I just found a nifty free programme called 'Xpadder' :
http://www.xpadder.com/download.html
It lets you remap mouse and keyboard onto a gamepad, and to define the functions of every button.
It's very easy to use, and works surprisingly well with FF, albeit the 'mouse' control takes a little adjustment. However, since ff has a 'pause/slomo' feature anyway, I just use that a little more when my aim is off.
I remap the mouse movement to the left analogue stick, keyboard movement to the right. Mouse buttons 1 and 2 go to joypad buttons 1 and 2. The D-Pad has all the function keys mapped to it, so you can easily select the power to use. Pause I have on the left shoulder button, and so on and so forth.
I was surprised by how easy it was to play FF, and it moves the game a little way towards The Greatest 3rd Person Action/Beatemup Ever.
Give it a try, it's less than a meg in size and I was playing FF on a gamepad within 5-10 minutes of downloading it, so you have little to lose.
If this little application solves my issues with The Incredible Hulk (the movie game), 'tis official: I love you.

Very handy, i've been looking for a good version of this sort of program. Thanks muchly Tommy.
Um...I don't love you, per se, but...yeah...
*cough*
(uncomfortable silence)
...I'm just gonna go now...
It does seem to work with the hulk, bypassing my 'no start button on joypad problem'. Nice lateral thinking OW.
Plus I can get Iron Man to play properly too, I'm guessing.
Yay Xpadder, the solution to all life's problems!
i'll take it for the sake of having another program for that, but there's also this:

'Tis official: I love tommyboy.
Ahem. *cough* *cough* Thanks for the fix, tom. TIH is much more enjoyable now that I needn't split my attention between keyboard and mouse (and the divil knows that I'm such an absolute duffer at rapid action games that I could certainly do without a difficult user input configuration). :)

Phantom Bunburyist and Fop o' th' Morning
right, i remember using joytoykey a few years ago, and tommyboy was interested in it.
hey tommy could you post what sort of setup you are using for FFVTTR?
i'll be using a 10 button PS2 style controller
off the top of my head, would this be the setup?
d-pad macro'd to numbers 1,2,3,4 for character selection
a,b,x,y buttons macro'd to the different F1,F2,F3,F4 for slecting attacks
trigger buttons set up for Ctrl (for overpower), left mouse button, right mouse button, and maybe Alt for camera control.
start button macro'd to Esc.
is it possible to macro the right analog stick to Alt+mouse direction for camera control?
Ow: yes the hulk definately needs gamepad control, when i get a new pc i'll be using this for sure.
Heres how I have my saitek controller set up for FF:
Left analogue stick is mouse movement (ie the cursor), right analogue stick is keyboard left/right and mouse wheel(zoom in out)
The function buttons(selecting powers) are mapped to the + d-pad, to enable quick power switching. The rest is as you can see it.
It's not perfect, but makes a nice change of pace from the keyboard/mouse.

THANK YOU for posting this. My gamepad is about the same, and I could not come up with a workable layout.
/swipes yours. Can we kitbash controls?? Haha!
wow, that looks pretty similar to mine, except mine is all black and only has an analog button in the middle.
how does that work for you? i find mine acts like it's buttons are being held down a lot. i get such unwanted effects as dialogue skipping ahead in rpgs before i can read it, and i accidentally die in platformers because even though i let go, the character keeps walking forward. this doesn't happen all the time, but it is quite frequent.
well i played a few rumble room missions with no pause... wooh that was a bit fast paced (i had to turn on AI and only use one character)
i think i'll add the + and - to my setup, sso i can speed up and slow down on the fly

With mine the analogue sticks have a very slight 'wobble' when not being used (you can actually see in my pic where they are red as if the sticks were pused diagonally). It doesn't affect gameplay in anything I actually play though.
You could try setting the stick up in control panel and calibrate it there.
Thanks for posting about Xpadder. I'm setting it up now so that my Logitech Rumplepad can emulate the controls for FFVT3R.
I think this is my first post, new to this very cool forum. I just recently "refound" this game after playing it for a few weeks back in March of 2003 with the original Freedom Force. After years of trying to remember the name of this game so that I can play it, it took Yahoo Answers to give me what I was seeking. . .
