YES!!! About bloody time too....
As much as Marvel's classic comic or the '80s toon nerfed the stories so they could be released as "kid fare" - the stories were probably the best war stories that I ever came across growing up. That was probably thanks to Buzz Dixon/Larry Hama's excellent writing and pacing while still keeping the awe factor high enough to keep adults and teenagers glued to a children's show.
Maybe the upcoming live-action movie might finally push G.I. Joe forward into a real tribute to soldiers.. complete with lumps and all.

Am liking the look so far, especially Scarlet's look- recognizable yet more modern and practical. Duke's design looks nice too (gotta to into the gallery to see it)
Also judging from the article, the whole thing about Duke in the animated movie I suspect is getting thrown out the window (actually, I'd be happy if the entire animated movie was thrown out the window along with Serpentor and Sgt. Slaughter, but that's just me ;) )
CQ, I'd hardly say that Hama 'nerfed' the stories from the 80's....well, at least not until they started doing the whole Ninja Force bit. Just because they weren't particularly gory or bloody hardly lessened the impact of the mature (in the true sense), deep stories that he was telling. You're right htough, those stories are some of the best comics I've ever read, and they are hands down the best war comics I've ever come across. So far this looks very good. All the costumes are very faithful to the originals (although something about Destro's design doesn't quite grab me), and I like the idea of them moving away from all the dreck that they've done with the franchise in the last several years. Color me cautiously optimistic.

I was more or less saying the cartoon nerfed the violence level that the comic book implied so that guns fired lazers that "stunned" if they did hit anyone but hardly a shot hit anything unless it was a robot, building, or vehicle. Plus all vehicles exploded in that typical Hollywood style but nobody died because they always had time to eject moments before impact. Thankfully all of that will be removed for Resolute which finally will give a sense of danger to the show that war movies had but children's animation was forbidden to attempt.. war always had casualties on both sides. Even the animated Joe movie was forcefully nerfed after parents freaked out at the violence level and deaths within the Transformers movie and that was pushing the line for animation back then. Heck, I remember the animated ads for the comic book seemed far more breath taking then any of the shows I remember off the top of my head but that is probably because they were using the actual comic as a storyboard.
And what makes me even more interested is that Hasbro reps said that if Resolute does well then Transformers will see a similar revamp too for their cartoons... outside of their Cartoon Network version that is.

Ohh! I'm sorry CQ, I totally misread your post! You're absolutely right, and as much as I loved the toon as a kid, it is so weak-sauce compared to the comics. If Transformers got the same treatment, and we get to see a G-1, maybe Dreamweave comic style animated series.......that would be beyond awesome.
Expect alot of characters to die on the Joe side of this. According to Ellis, he went to Hasbro with a list of characters he wanted to kill and they said "go ahead". Also he had no clue who/what G.I. Joe's were going into this project. Apparently that is why they wanted him to do it since they didn't want some nostalgia fest. Though he did watch/read all the original G.I. Joe stuff (after getting hired to write the movie), it is a safe bet that he will have no problem going after fan favorite characters. Plus he blows up Moscow :P
Hmm.....characters dying was always a part of the comic, but I hope it won't be done to cavalierly...which it rather sounds like it will.
I only remember one scene of someone dying in the cartoon. Cobra Commander and a pilot were going down in one of the helicopters. There was only one chute that they argued over. Next shot was Cobra Commander floating down with the chute.
