Title: Grimy Patriot City
Post by: GogglesPizanno on June 14, 2008, 02:07:52 PM
So way back in the day I released some building re-textures... For whatever reason I was looking at those again and realized, I like Grimy comic cities. Or in the case of FFvTR I like them slightly less bright and shiny. Its great for FF storylines, but seem too Technicolor after a while. So I went in and started tweaking stuff around... muting colors overlaying some dirt and grime... trying to give it a used look. I got a good part of the city textures done... but here is a generic sample.

Thats exactly how i like my game... always liked city textures from the first game a lot more than the second one...  what you have done here is exactly the way i want the game too look :)

Oooooooo........nice & dirty. I like it; it has a more realistic look that I like better than the technicolor world of FF. Good job!

Not  in the near future Im afraid...
If anything its just gonna be a texture replacement pack because
A. I'm not putting myself through THAT again, and
B. There aren't that many more maps floating around (at least with creators that I can get in contact with).

I suppose if someone were energetic, you could duplicate up the city maps with their own texture directories and then have the standard and "grimy" versions.... the problem there is that you'd end up doubling up on textures a lot cause each custom texture directory would have to contain not only the new textures, but copies of the originals as well. Stupid limitation of maps only being able to look in a single location for textures.

I'm toying with changing up the textures for some of the non city maps as well, though I don't think the differences are gonna be near as noticeable.

Ah shucks.

Great work, regardless.  I have your building retextures already, so anything else is just icing on the cake!

That would be helpful in differentiating Gotham from Metropolis...

Yep, I've got to voice approval for that as well. Looks really great. I would definitely be wanting to pick those up.

These textures look great - My only Q is will these replace the old city textures or will you have a version2 of the same map pointing to these new textures

As I indicated above, it CAN be done as a second version of the map, but that means a special texture directory for the map thats has to contain not only the changed textures, but additional copies of any non changed textures...

Though that seems to be what people tend to be leaning towards, so maybe it's worth the extra file size to do it that way.

Yes, please. I love the grimy look. I've always thought the maps in  :ffvstr: were too shiny and clean (even with trash and gum randomly place throughout it).

Honestly, I'd rather just replace the originals. I mean if I ever want them back I always just have the CD, right? But whichever way is fine. If they are two separate directories, I will probably swap out yours for standard, and keep the originals as backups.

Well to tide you over on the buildings you could always just download my original building pack. The building textures in the screen shot are just from there... I haven't updated those at all. Most of this new stuff are things like the roads, grass, objects etc... These I'm still working on, but the buildings you can get now.

Its an update... I actually managed to sorta accomplish something close to something.
Or whatever.

I had momentary burst of energy while waiting to leave for the Dark knight, so I managed to finish up (I think I finished up) the re-textures of the "City" Maps. I am slowly working on the rest of them (Cuba, Germany etc...) but it seemed like it made more sense to release them in individual packs -- or else they'd never get released. I was too lazy to grab new screen shots, so you can still use the first post as a basis for the overall sorta look... mostly I just finished cleaning up some stuff.

To use them just extract the textures into "{modfolder}\Art\library\area_specific\_textures" and off you go.
To revert back, just delete them.

It shouldn't overwrite anything... however IF it asks you to overwrite a file when extracting, it means that you already have a modified texture of some kind (such as the previous building textures I released)... I wouldn't overwrite anything until you are sure what it is. I have included a few building textures for those who aren't using my previous building pack. Those who are using the building pack, I would skip any overwriting of those files (or at least back them up).

If I had a cookie I'd give it to you.  I can't tell you how happy I was to not have to see the blue road.  Completely awesome.  Thanks.

I dunno how I missed these before. These are fantastic. Maybe now I will be able to stomache playing again without feeling like I'm in a Tim Burton film.

I look forward to seeing the new versions of the other maps.
