Title: New *Free* NIN Album
Post by: captainspud on May 05, 2008, 10:44:01 AM
So, yeah. Apparently he was so happy with how Ghosts went that he's giving the next one, The Slip (http://theslip.nin.com/), away for free.

It's much livelier than Ghosts, and it actually has vocals this time. Interestingly, the "teaser" songs released as singles last week (Discipline and Echplex) are two of the worst ones on the album-- the overall quality is quite good and much, much jumpier than I expected from those samples.

Listened-once-through review: very solid, 7.5 to 8/10. And hey, you can't argue with the price. :)

A quick warning: I think the first song is a trick, intended to make you crank your speakers (since it's so quiet). This is... ill-advised. You'll understand why. ;)

I got the link, but I cant get it till I get home form work.

I kind of get the impression that hes enjoying being a musician now that he can release what he wants when he wants. The output may lean a bit towards quantity over quality, but I think as a whole its good for everyone. And I really dig the attitude he taking with it in regards to the industry and his fans.

Isn't public licensing great? ;) (http://www.captainspud.com/stuff/nin_theslip_mp3.zip)

Thanks for the linkage.

Solid all-around effort. I've always preferred it when Reznor goes for a warmer, more organic sound to balance out the industrial edge in his music.

Listening to it right now. Can't wait to hear the whole thing.

EDIT: I have a question. Was his Ghosts album any good? I was thinking about getting it, but I didn't really know if it would be good... and it's astoundingly long. Longer then his Fragile album, me thinks...

FORIAMSPAM!

Ghosts was... okay. I dunno. The good songs were too short, and the lack of vocals really hurt it. I'd say about half of the album is at least "listenable".

It has only one song that I really and truly liked-- III Ghosts 21.

*shrugs*

Still worth the ten bucks just to support the distribution model. For me, at least. Same reason I bought a Wii. :)

Wow! You got a Wii for ten bucks?
</can't read>

I've decided that this will be the first NiN album I will ever get. I'd like to say I'm a big fan of Nine Inch Nails, but that's like saying I'm a big fan of Red Lobster because I love their biscuits so much, even though I hate seafood. That didn't make sense. There are several NiN songs that I really like out of the 208 that they have released on their 71 albums.
