After finding some alternate skins that I like, I'm wanting to set some other built-in characters to random skins, the way the thugs & civilians do. That's the easy part. However, some of the built-in's use the same mesh with different skins for different characters, such as the alien warrior and alien seargant. Is there a way to direct a template to use skins in a deeper folder from the same mesh, such as the following entry in the Skin field on the Template tab: seargant/seargant; or, seargant/random?
I know the less complicated way would be to make a seperate folder in the library/characters folder for the ones I *don't* want to be random (like the cop_chief, or the mech_man recolors for GL, Dr. Light, Klaw, etc), and make the appropriate mesh changes in FFEdit, but I'd prefer a way that doesn't require having duplicate files (character.nif, keyframes, etc) on the hard drive. Is this even possible? Would the engine know where I want it to look & what I want it to do? Am I completely insane, and need to stop these experiments before someone gets hurt? Oh, sorry, that last one was for my Group session later tonight. :P
Please sit on the couch, Mr. Gunn.
AFAIK, FFEdit doesn't offer this kind of flexibility, alas. This could probably be simulated by scripting, though: the old version (?) of the Mimic code, as used in the Strangers moves skins files on the fly.
