Title: RIP Dave Stevens
Post by: Renegade on March 11, 2008, 12:07:30 PM
Another taken too young.

I remember having my socks knocked off by his first Rocketeer back up and following the entire saga through it's various incarnations. His art blew me away and it still does. One of the best thing ever happened to comics was when his work graced them

I had one of his Betty Page pictures on a T-shirt that I absolutely adored and kept long after couldn't wear it anymore. One of my first best dates with my wife, back when she was my girlfriend, was to the newly renovated El Capitan theater in Hollywood to see the Rocketeer movie. I even met him once briefly.

Sad, unfortunate news. There been a little too much of this dying too young hitting comics the past few months.

This is indeed sad.  The Rocketeer comic was such a wonderful piece of comic work.  I also remember his beautiful Catwoman entry in DC's Who's Who. Wasn't the Rocketeer (by Vine?)one of the earliest character-specific meshes made for FF? I think that says a lot about the power of Stevens' work.

That guy was awesome. What a shame.

Here's to you Dave!

Also one of the first max files. I've played with updating the mesh a couple times since the max file was available, but never got around to finishing it. Maybe it's time I did.

I think that would be a fine tribute.

The Rocketeer was a childhood fav. Cheers, Mr Stevens!

I'd love to see a revamped Rocketeer mesh as a tribute ... what an iconic character.

Although I never had the chance to read Steven's comics, I was familiar with his art from various books over the years.  His drawings had the character of a Caniff and his action had a sleek dynamic akin to Gil Kane.  I loved the Roceketeer movie and still consider it an underrated classic.

R.I.P.  Keep on flying.

Sad news. He created one of the most enjoyable comics. And boy, could he draw! Rest in Peace.

...Reading about Mr. Stevens made me discover that Rocketeer Adventure Magazine #3 was finally published. One more rocket ride coming up for me.

Renegade: An updated Rocketeer would indeed be a fine, fine tribute.

Two interesting Rocketeer Movie facts.

1) Dave Stevens played the German "Test Pilot" who gets blown up testing the rocket in the captured nazi propaganda film.
2) If I remember correctly, he was also the director/designer of the animation they used in the film. The stylized B/W stuff.

What i loved about his Rocketeer work (especially his cover art), was that it visually encapsulated the feeling and style of everything I like about 30's adventure and pulp.
