Gary Gygax - 'Father of D&D - dies at 69 (http://blog.wired.com/underwire/2008/03/report-gary-gyg.html)
Gary Gygax co-created one of the most influential games in my life. Not only was he the 'father of D&D', but I would also say that he is the father of roleplaying games in general. If it wasn't for Dungeons & Dragons, we would not have the plethora of PnP and CRPG games out there including MMOs. I never had the pleasure of meeting him (I met his D&D co-creator Dave Arneson) but I wish I could have had a chance to thank him. Rest in Peace, Gary.
Edit: I did not think to look in General for a gaming post when I created this. Sorry.
Today is a sad day indeed, may he rest in peace. I had spent hundreds of dollars in my youth on his Dungeons and Dragons handbooks until I had to many to carry when ever my and my friends played. My collection got big enough that I traded one big box of the old ones to upgrade my first computer. I even tried to trade my cousin a computer for one of the first brown paperback handbooks with I hope he still owns. Role playing would not be what it is today if he hadn't of game along.
I read that and it saddened me. I am played my share of D&D in my youth. One of my teachers in High School ran an after school gaming club. And he and some old copies of the Monster Manual and DM Guide and all that stuff...all from "TSR". My very first character was a half elven, fighter MU named Arellin. Amazingly, Arellin lived through many adventures (including the nasty Aztec-themed module!!) to finally retire to a sprawling wooded estate somewhere in the world of Grey Hawk. Yeah...*wiping away a tear*...those were the good old days.
Oh well, thanks for the adventures Gary....you will be missed!

Heh... I loved the Aztec-themed module...
You might want to check out the longer thread about this in the General forum (http://freedomreborn.net/archive/index.php?topic=46362.0). Gary Gygax's influence extended far beyond games.
