Title: *Update* Raptorling news. *Update*
Post by: Raptor on February 27, 2008, 11:05:21 AM
As many of you know, my wife and I are expecting our first child.  Her due date was Monday, but as of yet the baby still hasn't decided that its ready to show up.  She had a doctor's appointment yesterday morning to discuss inducing labor because the baby is rather large (estimated to be 8.5 lbs as of 2 weeks ago).

Now for the fun part.  About 30 minutes before we were to leave for the doctor's appointment, I got really nauseous and started throwing up.  My wife had to go to her appointment without me and the doctor told her he wanted to induce labor at 6:30 this morning.  Unfortunately, he also said that if I was sick, then I wouldn't be able to be there and there is a very real possibility that I could miss the birth of my child.

The doctor has aggreed to delay inducing my wife until tomorrow morning at 8am to see if I am feeling better by then.  I'm hoping that whatever I have is just a 24 hour bug and nothing more serious.  If I'm not feeling better, then my wife will have to go through childbirth all by herself.

Please keep us in your thoughts.

It looks like he already has one on.

I'm really sorry to hear that, I hope you're feeling better tomorrow. I'll pray for you and the wife.

Thanks for the update sir, do continu to keep us posted - hopefully you've just got a 24 hour bug and you'll be right tomorrow.

But Hazmat suits are designed to keep the badness out, not in!
If Raptor was throwing up in a hazmat suit I don't think he'd be much support during the birth.

Get well soon!  Do you think it might be brought on by nervousness?

Nerves had nothing to do with the amount of hurling I've done in the past 24 hours.  I just got word from friends of mine that there has been a 24 stomach bug going around having the same symptoms I had.  And as of right now, I'm back to eating solid foods (albeit extremely bland solid foods) and have had no signs of nausea.  So barring any unforseen circumstances, I will be accompanying Mrs. Raptor to the hospital in approximately 8 hours.

The hospital offers free wi-fi in the maternity ward, so I will do my best to post some pics of the Raptorling once it decides to arrive.  (I say "it" because we are waiting to find out the sex.)

Congrats, man!  For the babyness, not the illness.  I'm glad you're healing quickly.  Sounds like you should be okay for it.

Hey guys!  Sorry for the delay in news, but the past couple of days have been really hectic.  Here's what's happened so far.

Mrs. Raptor and I went to the hospital Thursday morning for her to have labor induced.  Apparently whatever stomach bug I had was of the >24 hour variety because I was feeling fine by then.  Things were progressing slowly, so around 2:30pm I went home to check on the pets since we live 3 miles from the hospital.

I get back to the hospital room around 3:45 to find Mrs. Raptor wearing an oxygen mask and 3-4 nurses checking her charts.  I find out that the hormone used to induce labor is causing the baby's heart rate to dip during contractions (which are still in the mild to medium strength range) meaning that the baby isn't responding well to the stress labor is causing.  They had stopped the hormone drip and put Mrs. Raptor on oxygen in an attempt to stabilize the baby.

Five minutes later Mrs. Raptor's doctor is standing in our room telling us that its not working and that the Anesthesiologist is on his way up to her room to give her a spinal injection and that three minutes after that we are all headed to the operating room for a C-Section.

This is a picture of me in scrubs waiting outside the operating room for the nurse to take me inside during the procedure.  Needless to say, I'm freaking out at this point.

Around 15 minutes later, at 4:15pm, we were introduced to our daughter, who, by the look on her face in this picture, had a few choice words for us after forcing her to make an appearance before she had decided she was good and ready.

While Mrs. Raptor was in Recovery letting the anesthesia wear off, I was allowed to sit and get to know my daughter for a few minutes.  Please excuse my shiny forehead, but given the stress of the situation, I was sweating a good bit.

I am pleased to announce that as of this morning, everyone involved is healthy and happy and just enjoying each other's company, so it is with great pleasure that I introduce you all to my daughter, Miss Sarah Alexa:

Good show, old man!  :)  I'm relieved to know that all worked in you favour in the end.  Of course, young Miss Sarah is certainly a stunning reflection of the brave and lovely Mrs. Raptor.   Cheers and congratulations to you and your entire family!  I would say "get some rest," but you are not likely to meet that opportunity very soon. ;)

Thanks everyone.

Mom and baby are home from the hospital now.  We came home Sunday and took the day to get situated.  Grandma and Grandpa came to visit yesterday, so this is the first chance I've had for an update.

One of the things my wife and I were concerned about was one of our cats, Lucifer.  He has a tendency to be a bit antisocial with visitors, so we were very worried about how well he would handle the new baby.  Well, a few hours after coming home, I was sitting with the baby sleeping on my chest and Lucifer decided to climb on my lap.  I was ready to smack him away when he just plopped down and started purring.  My wife was floored and grabbed the camera.  Note the worried look in my face in the first picture.

So that is one hurdle we've cleared.  So far everything is right on track and everyone is doing fine except for Mrs. Raptor not being able to get any sleep.  I keep urging her to nap whenever possible, so hopefully she will be able to get enough sleep.

Thanks to everyone for the great comments.

What a gorgeous baby. Here's to the adorable family!  :waterwizard

Animals have spookily amazing instincts for babies and people who are ailing; perhaps a "vulnerability instinct".   It looks like Lucifer will be downright angelic with her.

El Condro's right - cats have suprising insight on things like this.  I'm glad all is working out well.

I dunno... the look in that cat's eyes says, "Get that camera away from my next meal!"

But I jest, I kid!  Thanks for sharing the pictures, Raptor - hope your family continues to do well!

Great pics all right and while I think that cats are the devil's lap-dogs (so to speak), it seems like everything is settling down nicely.  Its a good thing that you're aware of a danger that might not even exist (have I tied myself in knots with this yet?).

Might I add:  the look on  your face in the first pic is priceless!

Your cat Lucifer has very similar markings to one of my cats, Oracle.

Kitties are usually ogod with babies, but I wouldnt leave them alone together until the baby is a little bit older.
