Title: New Animated Work (New stuff added March 4th!)
Post by: Cardmaster on February 20, 2008, 10:56:19 PM
Okay, so for those of you that don't know I'm enrolled in the USC Film School learning animation..
For one of my Animation classes here we have weekly projects in which we need to animate things and whatnot..
Anyhoo, this is the first assignment I've actually been quite pleased with, and thought I'd share the results with y'all.
The character used in this is a paper-cutout puppet animated beneath a "top down camera" and shot frame by frame (approx. 240 poses)

So, lemme know what you think! : )

(also, if you're unable to view the movie file, pleeease let me know; I've been having server issues lately. thanks!)

Cheers, CM! :)  I chuckled heartily at the high-tech meets low-tech encounter, both with respect to the medium and the message (for "[t]he medium is the message," is it not, Mr. McLuhan?).  Relearning the past--for the first time--is always painful, to be sure.  I also detect resonances of Aristotle's infamous "featherless biped" in your illustration, an idea that you have (intentionally or not) transported to the robotic age.  I also very much appreciate the irony of the title in contrast with the outcome of your very short story ("Ivan," "John," "J/Iokanaan," all bearing a much more merciful persuasion).  'Tis a virtue to accomplish much with concision, and you have done so.  Well done, lad! :)

P.S. Would you consider doing a series of short animations featuring this character?

Heh, thanks guys. ^_^

And ow_tiobe; eloquent as always. :P Reading your post took me a while what with the wiki-crossreferencing. :)

And, well, I was considering doing a continuing series with this character.. if I did though, I probably would switch to some sort of computer setup rather than doing the cutout puppet.. it just took way too much time. Heh.

Just a bit of artistic advice. On the drawing at the end you did a thick outline around it. When doing the outline you did not complete the outline around the whole hand. When I saw it I found it to look strange. Doing a thick outline is nice but don't forget to follow ALL of the outlines. That is a mistake I learned on my own.

Meej: Noted. I'll look into fixing that for my next project..

In the meantime, here's this week's assignment: 10 seconds, hand-drawn. Ended up doing 186 drawings for this and then coloring them digitally in photoshop...

First one was great. Good motion (especially on the eyes), good pacing.

Last week's was good-- a bit too much delay on the second throw, and not enough body follow-through on the third impact, but they're minor quibbles. Overall it's really great.

This week's is... interesting. @_@ It follows the song well, but I'm just not a fan of abstraction. So, 0/43, plus you lose all your points for the other two, and all future works. You fail. Please report to the Cavern of Itching for your punishment. You will be asked to surrender your fingers at the door.
