Title: A different type of costume contest..
Post by: Ephemeris on January 21, 2008, 09:55:03 PM
I have a level 15 character on Virtue named Ivory Tower.  She is a gravity control/psionic assault dominator w/ flight.  Her first costume is similar to Emma Frost/White Queen's.  I want to have something different that suits the name and can't be mistaken for a copyrighted character, but so far haven't come up with anything that I've been satisfied with...

So here's the deal, design a costume for my gravity/psionic dom, Ivory Tower.  She has no backstory at the moment, only a name and what I thought were the most fitting power sets, so set her in any era or genre you desire. The winner will earn a total of 3 million infamy/influence on Freedom heroside or Freedom villainside or Virtue villainside.

Use the character creator to design your entry and post your screenshot here for judging.  If you're doing something 'outside the box', explain your rationale.  Entries need to be posted before saturday.  I'll choose a winner next saturday.  One entry per person.  If there are enough entrants (min 6), I'll make 2nd (1 million) and 3rd (500k) prizes.

Ivory Tower
n.   A place or attitude of retreat, especially preoccupation with lofty, remote, or intellectual considerations rather than practical everyday life.

[Translation of French tour d'ivoire : tour, tower + de, of + ivoire, ivory.]

I'm out of costume ideas for this character, so let's see what you guys can come up with!

I was going for a Lady Godiva "I'm too good for you" look. Ivory tower reminded me of the whole exotic nature of the material, and its origins in Asian countries and Africa. To reflect that i gave her a darker skin tone with red brown hair making her exact ethnicity hard to pinpoint.
The 'baroque' pattern is meant to show the excess she could have access to, being the heiress of a foreign fortune, or simply the extravagant life she leads using her domination powers to get everything she wants.
The look is more high-fashion than super villain costume, the collar is a bit or hard and sharp amidst the white and silk.

Good luck with your costume hunt, Eph.

Backstory:

[insert name here] was a sheltered academic in the Rogue Isles, researching various psychic phenomenon related to the basic universal forces of physics. When Lord Recluse enacted his plan with his Web constructs, the sudden dismantling of it by the heroes sent by Statesman somehow interfered with a delicate experiment [name] was running and that unfortunate accident imbued [name] with psychic powers over gravity plus a healthy dislike for Statesman and all other heroes like him, since the mere presence of those powers also had the side-effect of making her useless as an observer in her chosen field of study. So [name] came down from her Ivory Tower to pursue a life of vengence against those who would interrupt her work.

Origin: A powerful sorceress in her home dimension, Olphhilda the Black was drawn to the dark arts. Eventually Ophhilda was consumed by dark magic and became a tyrant lord of her homeland. Her servants eventually grew tired of her unjust ways and sought another wizard who was capable of banishing her from their lands forever. The servants of Ophhilda found their wizard after an exhaustive search. Hugmund  the Green (http://www.captainspud.com/mjb/images/coh/ephy2.jpg) turned out to be more than a match for Ophhilda.

While the fight between Hugmund and Ophhilda was epic the outcome was never in question. Hugmund the Green dispatched Ophhilda and banished her from thier land. Fearing that Ophhilda would seek more power and return for her throne Hugmund opened a dimensional rift and tossed the bound Ophhilda inside.

She awoke in a strange land. One not of sorcery but of technology. Her powers had been reduced to a mere fraction of what they had been. She would start from scratch and rebuild her empire. Dubbed "Ivory Tower" due to her extreme height and her glistening white hair by her enemies, Ophhilda will stop at nothing to reclaim her former glory!

I thought about this and figured out that as a young girl she was kidnaped awhile on vacation in Euorpe with her parents and sold to a Oil Shiek to be raised as one of his harem. Awhile keeping her on exotic drugs awhile she was growing up into a fine young tall woman, she unknowingly to him developed powers because of the drugs. She trained herself in using those powers so one day she could escape. Taking advantage of a visitors kindness, she escaped to America and started searching for her parents. Months later she found out that they had moved to Paragon City so she followed after them. The oil shiek had came to America looking for his Ivory Tower (the nic-name he had given her) and had killed them just a few weeks before she had got there trying to find out where she was. She vowed to make him wish he had never named her that and started searching for him as a new super hero on the streets of Paragon City named the Ivory Tower wearing the harem outfit she still owned. He reconized her when she at last found him, he's now paying for his crimes againest her and his family because he didn't get to escape back to his oil rich county. He's spending the rest on his life safe behind bars in prison thanks to Ivory being talked into not lowering herself down onto his level. Before he went, Ivory told him that he better stay there and not to ever escape or get out or she would finish what she started even if she had to follow him all the way back to his home.

what's her origin? easier to design a bio then

It's a costume contest, not a bio contest.  Origin and Bio don't matter so much, as Eph can just write one around the character.  AT, Powersets, and Name are the relevant factors.

I may have an entry if I can find time to put it up somewhere.  I wanted to put a rook as a chest emblem, but unfortunately I find that feminine (ahem) assets distort many emblems pretty badly to the point where you might as well not even bother.

BTW, I really like D's look though I'm not sure it matches up with the name.

As BlueBard said, the bio doesn't matter.  I just wanted to know people's rationales if they decided to make something 'outside the box.'  If that means bio to you, so be it.  You will only be judged on the costume.

The key elements are: level 15 female grav/psi dominator named Ivory Tower.

Based on the participation so far, we'll have 1st, 2nd and 3rd place rewards.

And just a note, replace the wings on mine with the dagger cape, it looks much better, but since you can't get it at character creation, and I'm lazy  :D

Or, you could just use my other costume again  :P

I vote for Catastrophe's costume (minus the I WILL CRUSH YOU facial expression), as that dress and those boots actually look like an art deco skyline.

Thanks for liking it and the reason I added a bio was to explain the harem costume she's wearing. She could of been wearing a harem girl costume during Halloween when she first used her powers and decided to keep the look since that was what the villains first saw her in. She could then change her costume into a different look as she gets more experience and wants the villains to take her more serious.

Thanks Spud  I kinda felt since shes a dominator she should be angry, but the face was more or less a subconscious choice.

Nice use of the Jester sleeve pattern BB, I like it.

I'd have been happier if I could have plastered a nice large rook across the front of that jacket, but all told I'm pleased with the effect.  I was going for a look that says beautiful but cold and arrogant.  Plus I think I managed to avoid making her look too much like an Emma Frost clone.

One downside is the hair... Any cape would clip it pretty badly.  So if Eph wanted to put her in a cape he'd have to change the hairstyle.  But then just about any long hairstyle is going to have the exact same problem.  This outfit looks better without one anyway.

Here's the final look:

BB's costume is most represented with the jacket, shoulders, chest, sleeves, belt, skirt and upper leg portions.  Some were slightly recolored.  What I liked most of BB's design was the way the jacket, belt and skirt looked together.  I had tried the jacket before in a previous costume, but could never get it to look right.  The hair was from Ver's, recolored to match Ivory's hair color from her previous costume.  The boot pattern was from Catastrophe.

LOL!  I only just now realized why I got *extra* in our trading session!  I thought you were just being exceedingly generous in a random-act-of-kindness sort of way!
