Title: gmax for nifskoping
Post by: bearded on January 16, 2008, 04:32:50 PM
i just want to point out that gmax is free, and can be used to make 3ds objects for skoping.

Really?  When did NIFTools add support for gmax?

I'm hoping your sarcasm has just reached a new level of dryness...
Or else I'm being dense.

Wasn't it was you who did the tutorial on how to use gmax for making static objects (a sword I believe) using the latest 3dmax plugins.

well, yeah, i meant static objects.  didn't know our esteemed duke of daffy had already made a tutorial on it.

I love your facial hair too, BiL.

(I am willing to admit, in a rare vein of sincerity, that I actually thought bearded was having another go at our diverting way of exchanging absurdities with his initial post.  Hence my ironic post above.)

i did look at your tutorial, and it does look much better than mine, my tutorial being:
Quotei just want to point out that gmax is free, and can be used to make 3ds objects for skoping.

There's a certain concision and pithiness to it, I'll give you that.  Do you mind if I add "Duke of Daffy" to my dual title poll?  The option would credit you as follows:

"Phantom Bunburyist and Duke of Daffy (made possible by the kind people of bearded, LLC.)"

Aye?

Also, Blender and Wings 3d models can be (imported?) to Nifskope.

Not exactly.  NIFSkope can only import the non-proprietary 3D file formats .3ds and .obj.  It is true to say that both Blender (which has its own set of NIF exporters) and Wings3D can export to .3ds and .obj, but NIFSkope cannot work with the Blender and Wings3D native file formats, .blend and .wings, respectively.  By the same token, any programme that can export to these file formats could generate 3D models that can be imported into NIFSkope.  Free or inexpensive programmes that can do this include, but are not limited to, MilkShape3D (http://www.milkshape3d.com/) (30-day free trial; a mere $35 US or 25 Euros to own), Anim8or (http://www.anim8or.com/), Izware Nendo (http://www.izware.com) (the programme on which Wings3D is based), and a number of other less widely known 3D modellers.

This is what I mean, I guess you're confused about the wording.

Maybe you meant converted or exported instead of imported a few posts above?

I meant to export the mesh from the program to 3ds or obj format and then import them to Nifskope.

unfortunately,i seem to get this error meesage, "gmax12.exe is not a valid Win32 application", what would be the cause of this?  if it helps, i am running microsoft vista.

I don't use vista, but you might want to look at trying compatibility mode and see if that fixes it:
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/using-windows-vista-compatibility-mode/

Worse case, if that doesn't work, you could try the 3D program Blender. It currently has nif plugins as well, but the UI is rather complicated and non-intuitive.

A third option is to use some other 3D program that will export .OBJ or .3DS files, and you can then use nifskope to import those files in. Doing it this way requires a bit more work (Mapping/Texturing, Adding nodes in nifskope etc...), but it does work. This is actually how I do most of my tweaking, but thats just because it works for me. Its a personal preference...

You can look further up this thread for program recommendations...
