Title: scared witless
Post by: bearded on October 29, 2007, 09:14:22 PM
i was doing a car patrol on a dark stretch of private road.  the only thing around was empty mansions, lit by flickering lamp posts, antique style, with gas lit fire.  i turned on the radio, and the talk radio was doing a special on ghost sounds.
the sound was the screech of metal, of an ancient cell door being opened, i'm not even sure where.  it sounded like someone saying, 'i'm in here, help me.'
now, several things went through my mind.  i know the human mind gathers patterns, hence, we see faces in things where there are no faces  :).  and so, we hear voices from random sounds.  natch.
it then occured to me, if there are such things as ghosts, this is what they would use.  natural sounds.  natural movements. can't get something from nothing. and there would be a lot of them.
with this mindset, i looked around, in the dark.  i saw them.  everywhere.  shapes in the shadows, slight movements.  a leaf falling was a hand slowly waving at me.  i hightailed it back to the base.

so, if you open your mind to the idea of ghosts being possible, next time you are alone, consider.  they are watching you.  right now.  all around you.

Sounds like the "Am I just being paranoid or is that exactly what they want me to think?" version of apophenia.

Kinda reminds me of a Fritz Lieber story called "Smoke Ghost", about a contemporary spirit made of the vapors of the city, all smoke and harshness, the sounds of factories and traffic in its soul... quite an effective little scary tale.

Am I the only one surprised to learn that BiL still had wits to lose?

No, you're not the only one. I've worked on projects with him before.  :)

i just heard the creepiest thing i've ever heard in my entire life.  this is no lie, no what if, not a elseworlds.  true story.
i turned on a local radio station, and the dj was taking calls, ghost stories from locals.
a woman came on and said she had to move from an area, because it was too haunted.  she did a background research on it and it was a site for an old graveyard, from the civil war.
this site, this area is the exact area i was patrolling!

i will never be able to patrol there again, you realize...

Am I the only one who suspects that BiL, whilst on patrol, was the one doing the haunting and not some spirit from beyond the grave?

P.S. If I keep this up, I'll need to exchange "SouperIan" for "BiL" in my Profile's personal text!
