Title: You learn something new every day.
Post by: captainspud on October 03, 2007, 09:45:06 PM
Expiry dates are, of course, an approximation. The milk that's marked November 13th won't be a solid lump of cheese by breakfast on the 14th. Certain items can go months past marked expiry and still be perfectly fine.

Now, I've had past-expired cereal before, and it was never really a problem. I figure the worst-case scenario there is that you get some really stale, crunchy cereal. Annoying, but whatever. Not the end of the world.

So I pour myself a bowl of Special K and I sit down to watch the Daily Show. I take a bite. Hmm, tastes kinda funny. 'Nother bite. It tastes kinda like wood. Blech. This must be an old box. One more bite, just to make sure I'm not imagining it. Wow. I can't put my finger on what that taste is. It doesn't just taste like wood... it kinda tastes like pressure treated wood.

It's understandable that I couldn't immediately identify the extra flavor. I've never actually eaten mildew before.

The expiry date on the box was from February 2005.

I'm still trying to get over the fact that you know what pressure treated wood tastes like.

Though I suppose it's got more flavor than Special K...

Spud, after reading this, the mere thought of going into your kitchen, let alone your fridge, scares the crap out of me.

It's amazing you didn't get indigestion.

Talk about learning something new, the hard way.  :P

This was at my parents' house. My mom tends to buy a lot of food that nobody has any real desire to eat, so we end up with a lot of old junk at the back of the cupboard that needs to be culled periodically. Thing is, she recently reorganized the cereal cupboard, and the Special K at the back got moved to the front instead of getting chucked.

I don't think I'm gonna eat any cereal for a while that I didn't buy myself.

Your mother still had cerial that was more than 2 years old?

That's just unnerving.  I had to throw out some milk a few months ago, that was a few months old. It tasted noticably bad.

And Blue, don't be too hard on Special K. I once ate All Bran, (or as I affectionately call it, All-Crap) every day for about a year, simply because that's the only cerial we had at the time. I hated it with a passion that ignites the stars in the sky.

Besides, if you read a carton of milk it states: Guaranteed fresh for one week beyond the date marked on the carton.

I don't know why, but that's what they do.

Oh, and it's perfectly legal for you, the consumer, to rip the tag off your pillow.

You had a year's supply of All-Bran?

That's okay, my family insists that moldy bread is just bread with extra flavor. Needless to say, I'm not a sandwich or toast kind of guy when I come home.

And uhh Spud, well I'm curious how you would know what pressure treated wood tastes like? Are you part beaver?

Anybody who doesn't understand how I know what pressure treated wood tastes like has clearly never used a table saw with the dust chute pointed the wrong way.

Pressure treated wood is treated with chromated copper arsenate.

Mmmmmm . . . arsenic.

Hey I said about a year, it was 3 or four years ago so I don't remember perfectly but I'm pretty sure it was at least 4-6 months.

But what happens if you used arsenic and old lace?   :P
