Over the years, it's really hard to stick to just one favorite comic book character.
Here are some of my favorite characters arranged by rank.
Marvel:
1.Hawkeye
2.Havok
3.Daredevil
4.Moon Knight
5.Hulk
6,Captain America
7.spider-man
8 Ironman
9 Wolverine
10.Cyclops
DC:
1.Green Lantern (Hal Jordan)
2.Hawkman
3.Hourman (Golden Age) Edit: forgot to add this one. :)
4.Green Arrow
5.Batman
6.The Question
7.Aquaman
8.Flash (Barry Allen)
9.Superman
10.Spectre
I guess that's it. :P
I've been following comics on-and-off since the late 60's (yeah, I'm an old fart ...), and the characters I keep coming back to are:
Marvel: The ever-lovin' blue-eyed Thing.
DC: The Batman
Marvel- Thanos of Titan
DC- Weird as I'm not a big DC fan. Black Adam. WHen he ripped that cowboy apart at the UN last year, that had me hooked on him.
I could make a more complete list but for now I'll just do my two favs at the big two:
Marvel: Spider-Man
DC: Green Lantern Kyle Rayner
Off the top of my head...
DC- Guy Gardner, Black Adam (for previously mentioned actions), Blue Devil
Marvel- Ant- Man, Multiple Man (heck, the entire X- Factor Investigations team), Doc Sampson
Well, when I was around 10 years old my favourites were: Green Arrow, The Joker, Judge Dredd, Captain America, and Thor. Blue Beetle and The Question were also pretty cool.
Nowadays, I couldn't pick a favourite ... I've read waaaay too much good stuff. Green Arrow would be in the mix, though.
In no particular order...
Marvel - Hawkeye, Captain America, Taskmaster, Puck, Sasquatch, Guardian, Punisher, Wolverine, Dr. Doom, Thor, Doc Samson, Hulk, Cyclops, Deathlok, Moon Knight,
Iron Man, Spider-Man, Colossus, Wonderman, Beta Ray Bill, Thing, Juggernaut
DC - Captain Marvel, Superman, GL Hal Jordan, Batman, Black Adam, Martian Manhunter, Deathstroke, Deadshot, Captain Atom, Power Girl, Blue Beetle (Ted Kord ofcourse)
Probably a few more I can't think of right now :D
Magneto.
Though I love a lot of other characters to death, none of them even come close to the master of magnetism.
Marvel: Spider-Man, Hawkeye, She-Hulk
DC: Kyle Rayner, Zauriel. Plastic Man, Resurrection Man
There are certain characters that I like, primarily because of the appeal of their simple and effective design and archetypal personalities:
- Silver Surfer: I've always liked how Stan Lee writes him as a Buddha/Christ-like figure, a quasi-deity who is, somewhat ironically, very much a Humanist (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humanism), or more accurately, a champion for the rights of all sentient beings.
- Hulk: I didn't really get into the comics until I read Peter David's work, but his pseudo-Freudian twist on the character made him all the more interesting to me. But more than anything, I think watching the old Bill Bixby/Lou Ferrigno TV series when I was an impressionable little kid predisposed me to liking the comics.
- Daredevil: I first started reading Daredevil during Ann Nocenti's wildly underrated run during the late 1980s/early 1990s, and it's that particular interpretation of the character (the outwardly swashbuckling but inwardly guilt-ridden tragic hero) that I like best (Miller's Daredevil was always a bit hit-and-miss for me).
- Conan/Manji (from Blade of the Immortal)/Wolverine/Punisher: I don't know why exactly I like these characters... I think there's the sullen and angry 10 year-old in me that feels empowered when I read about these violent and crude characters.
- Batman: Never really liked the character, whether in the comics, cartoons, or in any of the movies (probably because I've never really cared for the "millionaire playboy" type of superhero), but I think he is one of the most iconic designs ever created, not just in comics, but in all of popular art.
- Iron Man: Just like Batman, never really cared deeply for the character (although Ultimate Iron Man has grown on me), but a solid design is a solid design (and by that, I'm referring to the better permutations of classic red-and-gold suit).
- The Maxx: I just love Sam Kieth's work, and The Maxx comics were just a distillation of everything I liked about his art.
- Ghost Rider: another character who makes my list of favourites solely because of his look. A black leather-clad skeleton with a flaming skull on a motorcycle with flame-tires... pure genius!
Batman and Wolverine!...... bump it, Darkclaw!!!
So, this is my loaded reply.
Marvel:
1. Thanos
2. Deathurge
3. Loki (honestly, if he wanted to, he would own Dr. Strange)
4. Hulk
5. spider-man
Dc:
1. Black Adam
2. Superboy Prime
3. Doomsday
4. Darkseid
5. Joker
Marvel-
-Iron Man- The regular shellhead, not the current super-villain rewrite
-Captain America- The version of him with a heartbeat
-Daredevil- Too many great writer runs here to not like him a lot (Miller, Bendis, Nocenti, Mack, etc)
-Thor- He just plain kicks @$$
-Iron Fist- The current run on Immortal Iron Fist is a great expansion to a classic character
-Shang-Chi- Gotta love Marvel's version of Bruce Lee
-Doctor Doom- Just a great villain, all around (not including the movie versions)
DC-
-Hitman- The entire run of that book was gold.. thanks Mcrea
-Flash- Jay, Barry or Wally... they're all great in their own ways
-Batman- Any of the major mini-series usually writes him the way I like him (Dark Knight Returns, Killing Joke, Long Halloween, Year One, etc.)
-Starman- Ted and Jack Knight-Great heroes... great Legacy
-Blue Beetle (T.Kord) and Booster Gold- The greatest comedy team in comics
-Shade- Villain and sometimes hero from the Starman and old Flash comics
-Black Adam-The recent stories focusing on him made him a great villain
Independant-
-Lone Wolf and Cub- Rich and three dimensional characters
-Grendel- Hunter Rose that is... thanks Matt- that first run is gold
-Marv- From Sin City, whatta great guy
-The Crow- Only the guy in the first run by O'Barr (the others were... disappointing)
I'm sure there's more, but those are the only ones I can think of right now.
DC:
GL Isamot Kol
GL Stel
GL GreenMan
GL Mogo
Hal Jordan
The all new Atom
Booster Gold
(a little biased on the gls, but the sinestro corps saga is spectacular)
DC:
Brainiac 5
Superboy (Pre-Byrne)
Superman (Pre-Byrne)
Supergirl (Pre-Byrne)
Mon-El
Marvel:
The Thing
The Watcher
DC: Batman (duh!),Hal Jordan,Superman
Marvel: Spider-man,The Thing,Punisher
Other: Spawn,Savage Dragon,Marv
Marvel: Spider-man, Ms.Marvel, Taskmaster, Annihilus, Captain America, Blackheart, Venom, Gambit, The Fallen One.
DC: Black Adam
marvel- no particular order
-------------
1-wolverine
2-apocalypse
3-magneto
4-mr sinister
5-sabretooth
6-deadpool
7-juggernaut
8-venom
9-ghost rider
10-hulk
Marvel: Apocalypse
DC: Powergirl
Never really liked DC, but I'd have to go with pretty much the whole cast of the first few issues of the JLI. God I loved that book.
For Marvel I'd say Venom, Juggernaut, Deadpool, Demolition Man, Domino, Iron Man, USAgent and Crystal.
I'll give you ten seconds to take a wild guess...........
reading all of this probably took a few seconds.................
For me, I have only one comic character that I have followed since I started reading comics, none other than:
Jubilee.
Otherwise known as her full name, Jubilation Lee, or her current codename Wondra. Most people have heard of her- don't laugh that she is my favorite. If you don't know her, I urge you to read her bio on marvel.com- I am the only contributer to that page and am responsible for most of her updates and several bits of information on there. I have most of her appearances, including her first issue and all of her key moments. She is currently named Wondra, has super strength and hover discs, and is field leader of the New Warriors.
^_^ yeah, I'm a nerd at heart, but I love it.
I also have a fond interest in Kitty Pryde, Colossus, and the team of Generation X as a whole. I have several key classic issues for Kitty, and most of the 75 issues of Generation X.
When it comes to DC comics, I like Batman, Batgirl, Robin, Starfire, Superman, Supergirl, and Wonder Woman... but I don't go out of my way for their comics.
Marvel: Ol' Jade Jaws!!! I loves me some HULK!!
DC: Bats
Quote from: catastrophe on October 06, 2007, 06:39:06 AM
Marvel: Spider-man, Ms.Marvel, Taskmaster, Annihilus, Captain America, Blackheart, Venom, Gambit, The Fallen One.
DC: Black Adam
HOLY CRAP! Catastrophe, you're still alive?!?!
Haven't seen you around these parts in...well it seems like a few years...
My favorite charactr has changed over the years.
At some times it has been Batman, at others, Wolverine, Swamp Thing, Metamorpho, Plastic Man, Superman, The Thing, The Vision, Deadman, Mr. Monster, Noman, The Scorpion (Atlas), The Badger, Daredevil, Dr. Strange, Captain America, the entire original Original Doom Patrol, Ruben Flagg, Grimjack, The Question, The Creeper, Captain Action, Conan, Doc Savage, The Shadow...
But most often it has been Spider-Man.
Probably my favorite Marvel comic book character was Nightcrawler. He had serious style.
Regrettably, I've read very few DC comic books, so I only know what I've seen from TV adaptations. My two favorites there would be Batman (from The Animated Series), and Green Lantern. (Both the Hal Jordan version from Superfriends, and the Kyle Rayner guest star appearance in Superman: The Animated Series. I guess the use of the power ring to create glowing green constructs really just captures my imagination.)
DC:
Superman
Darkseid
Green Lantern
Marvel:
Thor
Ironman
Captain America
I did a quickie list above but I'd like to expand it a bit. They're somewhat in order but strictly.
DC:
Green Lantern / Kyle Rayner
Batgirl / Cassandra Cain
Superboy / Kon-El
Batman
Robin / Tim Drake
Wondergirl / Cassandra Sandsmark
Green Arrow / Connor Hawke
Red Tornado
I think my age shows in my pics. I'm not a big DC fan, the majority of my interest is in Young Justice/Teen Titans and Batman. I'm probably missing a couple of favs.
Marvel is a lot tougher, there's a lot of characters I truly love and it's really hard to compare them. Here's some that come immediately to mind though. Spidey is #1 but the rest there's no real order.
Marvel:
Spider-Man
Scarlet Spider
Captain Marvel / Genis Vell
Ultimate Nick Fury
Justice
Baron Helmut Zemo
Magneto
Hawkeye
Thor
Hank Pym (preferably as Yellowjacket)
Cyclops
Angel
Bishop
Though I started with Marvel(back when they were the #2 company and had not turned evil yet) and have a soft spot for certain characters as they were(Hulk, Sasquatch/Alpha Flight, etc.) I do not much go for Marvel and have not since around 1988 or '89. I am an indie guy and have been since the mid-1980s(if not earlier).
Independent Comics Favorite Characters
1)Faust/The Crow(from O'Barr's original GN/series. The rest of the Crow stuff does not matter)
2)Miracleman(a.k.a. Marvelman)
3)The Badger/Roachmill
4)Dark Wolf/Twilight Avenger(tie)
5)Titan and Talisman(tie) of The Justice Machine.
D.C.
1)The Question
2)Blue Beetle
3)The Demon(Etrigan)
4)Batman
5)
Marvel
1)Sasquatch/Puck(Alpha Flight circa John Byrne era)
2)The Hulk
3)
4)
5)
The one character who would top all of these though would be The Shadow. Did not include him on any company lists because he seems to wander from company to company so often(D.C., Marvel, Dark Horse, Street & Smith, etc.).
Marvel:
Spider-man
Daredevil
Wolverine
Cyclops
Mister Sensitive/Orphan
DC:
Batman
Flash
Hourman
Green Arrow
Spider-man and Guy Gardner
followed by Flash, Captain Marvel (Billy pre-longhair), Hourman and Hal Jordan

Mind posting a pic or, if that's too much, explaining what happened to those who would wish to laugh at Doom's expense? :)

Simply put, Doom got mugged by hundreds of squirrels under Squirrel Girl's control. And it was in continuity.

It might have been a Doombot. In Walt Simonson's run on FF he had Doom show up and imply that some, if not all, of his apperances over the years were Doombots filling in for him. It was meant to be a retcon to explain away any out of character Doom appearances or appearances an individual reader didn't like, since it was ambiguous enough that the read could decide for themselves which appearances they thought were likely to be fake.
True, but Squirrel Girl also beat down Thanos, and they made a point of Uatu the Watcher saying it wasn't a clone, robot, duplicate or other simulacrum.

Right, but then Thanos claimed that he had developed such sophisticated simulacrums not even the Watchers could tell it wasn't him. haha...
...gotta love writers attempting to fix the mistakes of others, neh?
Back on subject, however:From the DC Universe:
1) Impulse
2) Kyle Rayner GL
3) Batman
From the Marvel Universe:
1) Nightcrawler
2) Spider-Man
3) Gambit or Iceman..

Ey that Superman
1. Rogue (Jim Lee)
2. Psylocke (Jim Lee)
3. Phoenix (Jim Lee)
4. Spider-man
5. Superman
6. Wolverine (Jim Lee)
7. Hiro (Heroes) *there is a comic book at DC so I think he counts*
Captain America is and always will be my favorite character!
Bump.
Ok finally getting around to this. And I have to say that it is really tough! There are so very many great characters that I have loved throughout the years, and some more recently:
Marvel
• spider-man (pretty much my all time favorite. What a fantastic character)
• Iceman (I think it was spider-man and his Amazing Friends that did it...I always loved his ice slides...man I wish I could do that!)
• Wolverine (yeah I know, typical...no freakin' ultimate here either, bub!)
• The Beast, I've always loved Hank's whitty banter, loved the fact that he's a genius and yet that his powers are so physical
• Nightcrawler, Kurt was a great character that was always fun to watch
• All four of the Fantastic Four (seriously...all four of them...with John Byrne on pencils!)
D.C. (so many really excellent iconic characters!)
• Aquaman (Aquaman #1 was one of my very first comic books if you can believe it! When Peter David was writing the book back in the 90s, what a great time!)
• Batman
• Robin (with big ups to New Teen Titans with George Perez on pencils)
• Hawkman and Hawkgirl, there's just something COOL about them both!! You gotta love heroes that fly and hit people with REALLY big melee weapons!
• Flash (hmmmm...probably Barry over Wally...but it's close)
Independents
• The TICK!!! Superhero parody at it's finest! Spoooooooooon!!!!!
• Invincible (oh man, sooooooo good!)
• Buzzboy (hoakie, cheesy, fluffy goodness. Kind of Tick like)
• Jack Staff, WAY underappreciated!
• Captain Canuck (What? A national defender without an indestructible shield, that can't fly, or shoot energy beams out of his eyes? Ha!! Good stuff!)
• Johnny Raygun (a recent find and VERY good)
* SAVAGE DRAGON, can't believe I forgot to put SD in here! Really great and fun character!
Honorable mention:
• Green Lantern stuff, I've always thought GL was very cool, but trying to uncover all the various GL's gives me a headache
• Wonderwoman, she's awesome, never got into the character much, but she was very arguably the first strong female hero...and her character endures today. That rocks!

And in addition to that, Deadpool weighed in on the subject once with "Oh come on, there's not WAY that's in continuity"
I'm a bit late, but I figure I'll chime in.
Marvel:
Spider-Man
Hawkeye I (Clint Barton, natch)
Ultimate Nick Fury
Quicksilver (pre-crazy version, Ostrander's take on the character was awesome.)
Deadpool
Agent X
Kang the Conquerer
Darkhawk
Nightcrawler
Thor
DC:
Batman
Green Arrow (Oliver Queen)
Green Arrow (Connor Hawke)
Speedy (Mia Dearden)
Martian Manhunter
Owen Mercer (Kid Boomerang/Captian Boomerang 2)
Ra's Al Ghul
Deadshot
Image:
Shadowhawk, both the original and Eddie Kolins
QuotePsylocke ([...] and many crotch shots under claremont's latest run)
Psylocke has been shamelessly oversexualized for years, I don't think that's anything particularly new. Personally I always found the character bland.
DC:
Superman (post CoIE, Silver Age, or Animated JLU version-this current amalgam in the books just ticks me off)
Batman
GL (doesn't matter which-really dig the concept)
Shazam (Capt. Marvel)
Marvel:
Spider-Man
Daredevil
Hulk
Captain America
Astonishing X-Men
Other:
Savage Dragon
Mage
Grendel-though not really a hero
Madman
