Title: Slippery Slope
Post by: Tomato on September 22, 2007, 11:30:26 AM
I've been playing around with the NIF Importer/Exporter (put out by the same awesome individuals who brought us Nifskope) and I've sucessfully exported a couple of modified imported meshes. Mostly I was goofing off though, and with one possible exception I really don't intend to use it at all, since most meshes are made Nifskope-friendly and it's such a gray moral issue that I'd rather not muck with it at all. I know how much work goes into the little bits I make, and I'm pretty much bottom of the barrel as far as the meshing community goes. I don't want to demean that work by saying "I can edit it, so I have full rights"

Still, on the other side, there's one series of meshes which would be almost perfect for a character, but each have one or two little details that ruin them for that purpose. If there's something about one of my meshes that's the same way, I don't want to say "No, you can't ever do that" outright, especially if I don't have time to do the edits myself. And in my case, I can't really release max files because I tend to eithor spread my mesh pieces out over several meshes (Syn's Helmet and body were on one, but certain glove/boot pieces were done on another, and I did a cape prototype on a third) While I jumble others together (The one with Syn's cape prototype also had Kneepads for Murs' Parallax, and something else I can't remember) because I just skope them onto different meshes anyway.

So yeah, just wanted to get your opinions on this.

I'd say it's fine with Irrational meshes, and that's basically where it should be used as far as importing goes.

Obviously, if specific authors give permission to someone, that is fine too, but I'd be surprised if anyone gave the kind of broad permissions like are done with Nifskope.

at the same time, I doubt it would hurt to ask them. Granted, many of the original meshers are no longer frequenting the community...

i would say that if you open this door you open to door to the likelihood of people making mistakes. i would suggest not making permissions lists etc and keep importing projects as personal as possible.

I agree completely. I just figured it best to ask then to just make assumptions.
