Title: Star Trek, Doctor Who and John Byrne fans
Post by: GhostMachine on August 02, 2007, 08:10:07 PM
Apparently IDW has acquired the rights to Doctor Who. No idea when they'll release anything, who will be doing the book, or even if they'll do more than one title.

IDW has a Star Trek one-shot from John Byrne on the plate (he's posted the cover to it at Byrne Robotics, in the Star Trek forum - I'd post a link, but you have to actually be registered to see any forum there except the main section), and it looks like it may feature the Romulan crew from the TOS episode "Balance of Terror". (Which happens to be my favorite episode) Byrne has neither confirmed or denied that speculation, but it definitely is about TOS era Romulans. Byrne has mentioned that he may be doing more Star Trek work for IDW, but hasn't said anything else about it except that he's apparently still in discussions about it.

HHmm... to do Dr. Who, wouldn't they have to get likeness rights from the actors who played the Doctor and his companions?  That seems prohibitivley expensive.

Unless they went with an all new Dr, but I dont see that grabbing fans...

Depends on how all those old contracts were worded.  Using their likeness *as that character*, may be owned by the BBC (or whoever originally had the rights), and it's all transferred over.

Normally, with TV show merchandising, this is the case.
