Due to a number of problems we've been having with the comic book stores in our area(mostly having to do with pre-ordering first edition of Sinestro Corp 1, not getting it, and then not getting a copy out of the second shipment even though wwe preordered that when the idiots didn't set aside the first one >.> ) as well as money troubles (nothing earth shaking though) my dad, who is my comic supplier, is cutting back on the titles we're getting. As he's frustrated to the point he just doesn't care anymore, I'm having to choose which ones to keep, and/or add on.
Anyway, the point is, I'd like to get just a general opinion on what to get... I realize alot of it's personal taste (I like USM, while I know it's hated by cetain other members) so I'm not expecting every one of the suggestions to be pure gold. However, this is a perfect chance for me to start looking into some new titles, and if something is generally well recieved, I can go ahead and tack it on.
Comics I'm probably keeping:
Countdown
Justice League
Teen Titans
Ultimate Spider-Man(I've come to dislike alot of Bendis' mainstreme work, but I do still like USM)
Ultimates(To be honest, this one's just to complete the set. I do like 2 better then one sofar, but only just)
Astonishing X-Men(Whine about continuity all you want, I prefer flat out ignoring continuity to keeping with the current idiocy that's been going on in the other books)
Comics I don't want:
Most mainstreme Marvel (with the possible exception of Captain America, just to see the progression of Bucky to the new Cap. Everything else though... until marvel stops screwing around, I don't want to deal with any of it)
I'd suggest blue beetle or jsa if its dc
or new x-men or ironfist for marvel
Well, my favourite books on the stands currently are Fables, Y - the Last Man (both Vertigo), Ex Machina (Wildstorm), Hellboy/the BPRD (Dark Horse), and Invincible (Image). I can't recommend these highly enough.
Here's a seconding for Blue Beetle at DC, it's shaping up into a really nice teen book. I'd recommend Birds of Prey, but Gail Simone just finished her run, and I don't know if it's going to stay good. Green Lantern Corps is a lot of fun, particularly right now with the Sinestro Corps War. Checkmate is a strong book, combining superheros and international espionage. The Flash might be worth checking out with the beginning of Mark Waid's return - the All-Flash special was good. Justice Society is a great team book, so I'll second that.
Over at Marvel you can't really go wrong with any of the X-books right now, except for Exiles and New Excalibur - they stink - but Astonishing, Uncanny, Adjectiveless, New and X-factor are all strong books at the moment, and don't have strong connections to most of what Marvel's been doing lately with Civil War, etc.
Your comics list is pretty similar to mine
Justice League - Great book, Meltzer is leaving but I don't think that will be a problem with McDuffie taking over.
Teen Titans - It's been poor lately but I'm sure it will become good again with issue #50 after McKeever takes over.
Countdown - I'm just sticking with it cause the DCU is very complicated to understand and if you miss one small thing.....other things won't make sense at all. It has it's moments.
USM - One of my favorites, great book.
Ultimates - Millar's run was fantastic.....of course I'll be giving Loeb a shot, but I'm a bit skeptical.
My recommendations:
Invincible - I recently got hooked on this series......the only good decision of my life
All X-Titles - I don't think there has ever been a time where all the x-titles have been good at once. Exclude Exiles and Excalibur......those 2 are just plain awful
Blue Beetle - very fun series to read
Green Lantern Corps - I love this book more then the regular GL series.......it's a like a dysfunctional police department tv series......except in space. Very entertaining read.
Cable and Deadpool - I love this book like it was my child.....nothing but pure comedy. It was slipping for a bit but ever since Nicieza introduced Bob former agent of Hydra as Deadpool's new sidekick, the series has me laughing out loud again...literally.
I could name a few more but this is becoming a bit of a long post. Hope this helps.
EDIT: were you able to get a copy of the Sinestro Corps Special?

I love Bob! But I miss Cable...:(

I'm sure he'll be back.....no body was found ;)
Bob is great, bravest pet/minion the world has ever seen.....I think I'll be skinning him.

I never thought I would see those word (I miss Cable) and can't help but disagree. Honestly I know he is suppose to be the straight man for Deadpool but the storylines involving him (especially the one with Apocolypse) dragged the book down.
Doktor Sleepless (just released I know but I've become a die hard Ellis fan)
Astonishing X-Men: Whedon is leaving and Ellis taking over. Talk about a changing of the guards I actually like (loved Whedon on the X-Men, but now that he is going I'm glad it's being left in able hands).
Cable/Deadpool: Now with 100% less Cable which makes it 100% better. So if I did my math correctly it's now 150% enjoyable!
Nova: Born from the best Marvel event in a while (annihilation) and continuing the greatness.
Blue Beetle: Good stuff though I fear for his life given DC's recent track record with teen heroes. Befriending Robin is the kiss of death in DC.
Invincible: Duh
Planetary: It's almost over but it's still greatly enjoyable.

he wasn't that bad was he?

Not so much in the beginning but about the time when Apocolypse came back and onward is when I started getting tired of him.
Yeah the Apocalypse story was horrible. When C&D started I had no interest in Cable but actually found myself drawn to the Cable side of the story more than the Deadpool. The liked the whole Providence storyline and Cable became one of my favorites. Actually I found Deadpool was kinda bland for a long time. But the Deadpool side of the book has really picked up these days.
All the X-Title save Exiles and Excalibur (both are garbage), every other Action Comics issue, All-Star Superman, Thor, Buffy, Loners, Runaways, New and Mighty Avengers, and New Warriors.

No. And might I add that the people who screwed us over on that both times deserve slow and painful deaths involving Rollar Coasters, rubber bands, (in their case) unnescessary body parts <_<.
I've been getting a real big X-men vibe here, which is odd to me. Don't get me wrong, I love X-books normally, but I've been distancing myself more and more since the whole "ZOMG sentinels Around Teh Mansion!!" BS. Did I miss something that made all of that stop sucking?
But anyway... I'm thinking Green Lantern (and anything to do with Sinestro Corp in general. Just forgot to add them all to the list), Thor, probably JSA, and possibly Atom, Captain America, Nove, and Blue Beetle. Maybe Ant-man as well, at least to start. I saw Murs geeking out on it in his thread, curious to see what the fuss is about.

I always thought it was an awesome idea, but the short answer is yes.
I don't really have anything to add since everyone already named good books that I also read, though I dip into fan4, black panther, recently new warriors, and the spidey (mainstream) books from time to time just to see what's up. If I'm lucky, a new gravity book will start up since he's no longer dead. -_-.
Anyway, one of my fave books at the moment is X-men: first class. It's a simple book with non of the drama of the current xmen stories starring the original 5 x-men with quite a few guest stars. It's not exactly in continuity, but it references a bunch of old school classic x-men moments, which I think is cool.
Tomato, the comics shop that hosed you over on Sinestro Corps sounds like one I used to get comics from several years ago; I'd frequently miss out on comics that were supposed to be in my subscription box and the morons wouldn't do anything about it, and I wasn't the only one. Suffice it to say, they didn't stay in business long.
And I'm with you on mainstream Marvel; the only Marvel book I'm reading right now (and have been for several months) is Captain America, aside from the Fallen Son one-shots (which the shop put in my box seeing as how they're tie-ins to Cap), and its probably going to remain that way for a good while. Just about all of JMS's work on Spider-Man needs to be thrown out of continuity to fix the Spidey books, and I've been sick of just about everything X-Men related for years. Don't even get me started on Iron Man, who I now consider to be Marvel's biggest superVILLAIN.
You might want to wait a while and add Wonder Woman; Gail Simone is supposed to be taking over as regular writer a few issues down the road, and that's the main reason I've decided not to dump the book - the art is great, but so far the writing has been meh (and Heinberg should never EVER be allowed to write a comic again, seeing as how the first arc kept getting delayed and was never even finished).
My list right now is:
Batman
Captain America
Honor Brigade
Justice Society of America (#8 is a great jumping on point for anyone wanting to read JSA who didn't start at #1)
Wonder Woman
(and Shonen Jump, but its a manga anthology)
