Title: G4's Code Monkeys
Post by: crimsonquill on July 25, 2007, 10:37:51 PM
If you are into retro-comedy with an adult edge and a serious nod to 8-Bit video games then this show is for you...

CODE MONKEYS (http://www.g4tv.com/codemonkeys/index.html (http://www.g4tv.com/codemonkeys/index.html))

I grew up on Atari, C64, ColecoVision, Intellivision, and more arcade games then I can think of... but anyone who remembers the stories of how wild and crazy the lives of programmers where back in those days and the horrible mistakes that were made (E.T. and Pac-Man for Atari 2600 among them) then the storylines here should be quite amusing to you. It's by the creators of MinoriTeam and Crank Yankers for those of you who are curious.

Just to give you folks a sample here are the episodes summaries thus far:

1. The Woz (Pilot) - Steve Wozniak (voiced by himself) owns an 8-Bit video company which has produced nothing but discount bin games by it's struggling coding staff. So he decides to sell the company to a rich oil-tycoon and take a partnership in some home computer company that needs a fruit for a logo. The staff led by Dave and Jerry discover that they might actually have to work for a change.

2. ET - Larrity The Oil Tycoon buys the rights to the movie E.T. from Steven Spielberg and Jerry has two days to make it into a game. The bad news is that Jerry is hungover from a weekend of endless coding fueled only by drugs and booze has no interest in sitting thru a dumb kid movie about an alien. The result is a mess that forces the whole staff to save their lives from a mob of ticked off customers.

3. Stonervision - After another weekend chained to their desks Dave and Jerry finally have enough of working as coding slaves and decide to quit their jobs. Taking a loan out from one of Jerry's "contacts" they decide to open up their own game company in the garage of a mansion they purchased with their money. Just for kicks they hire Atari's Nolan Bushnell (voiced by himself) to play against them in video games just for a challenge. After their game tanks horribly upon release they discover that their loan is from a drug dealer and need to seek help from their old boss to save their lives.

4. Super Prison Breakout - Larrity discovers someone has been stealing from his office so he decides to send his employees to a "scared-straight" night at the local prison. The prison warden decides to send his "guests" to various prison cells to learn a few things from the inmates - some getting more then they expected. Dave and Jerry find themselves locked in with a large tattooed roommate who is a war vet with a huge grudge against an old President and a big escape plan. Larrity learns that the Warden wants to turn the prison into a theme park but a break out spoils all of their plans.

I'm pretty sure that this show probably will not survive more then a season (it's too over the head for a general audience plus it's way too 'adult' for kids but for game geeks from the '80s it's just funny as heck). Take a look at the web site and if you like it toon in on Wensday's at 9 PM on G4TV.

I've seen all the episodes except Stonervision so far, and its pretty good.

I haven't checked the credits, but is Todd (Viking helmet wearing doll addict) voiced by the same guy who does Master Shake on Aqua Teen Hunger Force?

Checks credits list and then IMDB.com.... YUP! He is the same guy. Also "The Alchemist" on The Venture Brothers and "Dr. Wang" on MinioriTeam.

Quill, I would agree with you about this show's short life span but I believe you are forgetting one thing... It airs on G4.

G4 is a little known cable channel that can gamble on Code Monkeys. I hope we all see a second season.
