Title: Wiki Master Mesh List Project: Help me out please!
Post by: Alphanaut on July 17, 2007, 01:45:05 PM
Now before I get into this, I'd first like to thank Lunarman and Hitman for setting up the FR wiki and Syn for uploading the master mesh list on there. But now to my point.

As it stands, the master mesh list, while very useful for the most part, has many holes in it, some of which are becoming more evident as time progresses. Alot of links, especially those to Ink's meshes, are coming up dead. Also, alot of the newer meshes are not catalogued at all. On a more visual side, I sometimes find it hard to read the list, and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

What I am proposing is a revamp of the Master Mesh List, to make it a bit more comprehensive. An example of what I propose to do can be seen here (http://frworld.wikispaces.com/Mesh+List+-+Numbers). I want to make it easier to see what mesh is what, and perhaps in the future, have an image for each mesh too, so those skopers who are looking for a particular piece may be able to peruse through and find what they're looking for.

So I ask, can/will anybody help me achieve this goal? For the good of the community?

*coughs subtly* might wanna throw thanks in there to Dmenacer & Proto, for compiling & expanding, and probably joemama for the as-needed reposting & hosting...  ;)

What you propose is a damn good idea, but the terms "monumentous" or "gargantuan" don't seem strong enough for a task of this size.  Do you intend to list *just* meshes (as the original list aimed to do), or include hexes & 'skopes, as well? (Is a 'skoped mesh a full mesh?  If hexing is adjusting sizes of things in a mesh, would 'skoping just be cutting & pasting?  Will any determination & differentiation be made?)  The prospect of including an image with each one more than doubles the size of the project.  What size would they need to be for 'skopers to get an adequate view of parts they may be looking for?  How *many* images will be needed for each one (as some meshes have things on their sides or backs)?

I'm not trying to dissuade you from following up on this, I just want to make sure you have a firm grasp on what sort of things will be involved from taking this on.  While the odds are good that you'll get volunteers to help, don't hinge your plans on it.  As you've put the idea forward, you'll be saddled with the responsibility of being the project leader.  Something like this *needs* one, if not two or three, people dedicated to making this work.  Don't rely on others to do any significant portion of the work.  Be prepared to do most of it yourself (or with the assistance of anyone else who volunteers to partner with you), and be pleasantly surprised with occasional volunteer work from others.  There's not much worse than a much-needed, large, ambitious project that gets abandonded half-way through due to burnout.

With that said, I wish you luck in this.  If I see where I can lend a hand here & there, I'll see what I can do, but like most of us, my time is limited.

Are ya scared yet?  You should be!  ;)

I tried a coup[le years ago to make a site which hosted as many meshes as possible with pictures and all the bells and whistles you'd want to have. I stalled out while making the pictures.

It's just too big for me, dude.

I recently wanted to make a list of Ink's meshes, hosted on a site. I PM'd Ink to see if he had any issues with me hosting his stuff. I have not received a reply yet.

Haha,  didn't mean to forget you guys. Credit duly noted.

QuoteDo you intend to list *just* meshes (as the original list aimed to do), or include hexes & 'skopes, as well? (Is a 'skoped mesh a full mesh?  If hexing is adjusting sizes of things in a mesh, would 'skoping just be cutting & pasting?  Will any determination & differentiation be made?)

I was thinking of sticking to just full meshes, especially since skopes are sort of in a hazy region right now.

QuoteWhat you propose is a damn good idea, but the terms "monumentous" or "gargantuan" don't seem strong enough for a task of this size.

I realize this task may be enormous, bet I'm not having too much trouble with it so far. The real trouble for me would be the images: I don't have every mesh, nor do I feel inclined to download every single one of them. If I could just get people to send them to me, that would be the biggest help.

Quotehe prospect of including an image with each one more than doubles the size of the project.  What size would they need to be for 'skopers to get an adequate view of parts they may be looking for?  How *many* images will be needed for each one (as some meshes have things on their sides or backs)?

I was thinking maybe one from the side, and one straight ahead, and then I (or possibly someone else) would edit them together into a single image, and they'd all have a standard dimension.

QuoteWith that said, I wish you luck in this.  If I see where I can lend a hand here & there, I'll see what I can do, but like most of us, my time is limited.

Are ya scared yet?  You should be!  wink

Thanks for the input.

And I ain't never scared!

I think this is a great idea, but the only plausable way is to take it one letter at a time, i.e. Work on A's, B's, C's, etc.

Also, you might want to hold off for a week or two. I've never been too thrilled how the host sets everything up, and I'm in the process of finding a better location for the entire wiki.

I just want to say that I checked out the list some yesterday,

and it's really looking great!  You're doing a great job, and I think you're going about it the right way.  The images can come later (I know, much later), but the way the links and info are presented is really clear, concise and helpful.  Just take your time and don't get burnt out!

Thanks for the support guys!

Hitman, if you do change hosts, all the pages will be ported over right? It would be a shame to lose any of the pages.

Oh, most definitely the pages will be ported over. I'm just waiting for a few days off in a row to do it.

I'd definitely be up to helping you do so, if you'd like.

As the creator of the original Master Mesh List I wish you luck. It took me quite a while to get a list built of all the meshes and then keeping it up to date took quite a bit of time also. The only way I had figured out how to keep the links working was to collect as many of the meshes that I could. Since some of the mesh creators don't want others hosting their meshes, hosting all of them myself was out of the question. At one time I even had a MS group that had a lot of links to those meshes. Building a mesh list, adding the pictures for it and the links to it will take a lot of time and work. This is worth doing and I wish you good luck in creating and completing it.

I can't say that I would be of immense help with this, but I offer any assistance which I am able to provide.  PM or email me...both are available to the public here...and I will do all I can.  This is a great idea (pictures or not).  <--I could possibly help with pics, as dialup prevents me from uploading large files.  Drop me a line, and (redundantly) I will be  ^_^ to help.

I've been away for a while, but I would just like to say: Look me up if you need some help on this project in any capacity!

Here's an update for youalls-

There, um..., *ahem* hasn't been an update in the finding a new host yet. Alp's made a good start to the Mesh Lst, though, so.. good job there, buddy!
