I just bought Galactic Civ II Gold. Looks to be a fantastic game, but I have a problem with it crashing randomly, especially in the expansion. I found out what the problem is. Actually, I had two, but the one was easily fixed. The other is because my graphics drivers are too old. Unfortunately, Intel has dropped support for the ones I need. (82845g) Now I'm stuck with a great game that constantly crashes and no easy (or at least free) way of fixing it.
I think I'll go bang my head up against a wall a few times now.
What graphics card do you have? You may be able to just upgrade that for a decent amount. Granted, it's not free, but it's a solution.
It's an integrated graphics card.
It's happening less now that I've turned down some of the graphics options. Once you get a certain part of the game, it's easier to zoom out to the graphics-light tactical mode anyway and I really can't tell much different even in the 3d zoom mode.
It still happens, but I've sort of learned to live with it. I can sometimes play for a few hours with no interruption, and I've got the autosave set to kick in rather frequently.

Well, there's your problem. Integrated graphics are terrible
But if you think you can live with the crashes, then by all means, go ahead.
I don't play graphics-intense games. No shooters, no sports or racing games. Mostly strategy and rpg. NWN II is beyond my reach, but other than that, I can play what I want to.
And the card works perfectly with this game, if you didn't read my original post very carefully, it's just that any graphics cards with drivers more than a year old have this problem. The support for this card has been dropped. If it hadn't, it wouldn't be an issue.
No, I read your first post (Hello, I was the second ...). I was merely telling you how you could rid yourself of the problem.
If you can live with it though, that's cool.
I had much the same problem, fortunatley some new drivers did clear it up for me. before that i was relying on the autosave feature waaaay too much :P.
It's a great game though and i've had a lot of fun with it so far. I was a little disappointed with the espionage system, i was hoping for something a bit more involved but hey i'll take what i can get :).
A LOT of people are complaining that the original espionage system was better than the expansion version. They may end of changing it in a future patch.
Latest update: I recently found out about woot.com. Nifty website. Anyway, I installed a Firefox extension that tells me what they're selling for the day, and today's item is a cheep, no-frills ATI Radeon X600. Nothing too fancy, but it's twice as good as the built-in one, should clear up this problem completely, and will allow me to run Neverwinter Nights 2--and all for only $20. That, I can afford. It's already ordered, and my problem should be over in a week or so.
