Title: image editor
Post by: Podmark on June 01, 2007, 06:03:16 AM
I was wondering if anyone knew of a freeware basic image editor that would allow me to resize and crop images. Photoshop takes too long to load on my machine when I'm just creating a new avatar image or prepping some images for a request.

I seem to recall trying MS Paint for this but found it annoying.

GIMP at http://www.gimp.org is very powerful and will easily allow you to do that.

Paint.net supposedly is pretty good too, but I've never used it.  I've been told it's easier to learn than gimp too.  It's here http://www.getpaint.net/index2.html

If you just want to crop & resize, I've been using Graphics Workshop ever since Win 3.1.  I even found a version for XP (at least, it's updated, and works in XP).  Since there's not all of the normal image creating types of tools, it loads pretty quick.  It will also convert to & from just about any image type of file out there.....except maybe a .psd.

Also, for basic viewing, cropping, making contact sheets, etc. I really like IrfanView (http://www.irfanview.com/), which makes such things very easy. It is my default application for image viewing and basic picture operations.

oops, one little problem that I forgot about.  Not freeware; trial software.  But I haven't run into any blocks for the simple things I want to do with the trial version.

Well it took some getting used to but this should suit my purposes quite well. Thank you Panther.

My pleasure.

darn......I don't think I get any "birddog" fees for pointing someone towards trial software that even *I* haven't registered.   :P

Are any of these free to download, and can they be used to skin for  :ffvstr:? :ffvstr:

I apologize if I seem to bug, but does anyone know if GIMP can edit (.dds) files for  :ffvstr:, and if it works for microsoft vista?   I would hate to download it and install it just to find out otherwise.   Thanks for any help you can give.

Don't know the Gimp except from reviews (blame it on a dozen years spent in Photshop), but if it supports Photoshop import export plugins, it should support DDS, as it's not a native Photoshop format (it's made by graphic card maker nVidia). However, from a quick web search (hint, hint), this might not work out of the box. Alternatively, you may output in an intermediary format, such as TGA and use a command-line tol to convert to DDS.

I couldn't find info on Vista compatibility on the Gimp site; from other sites, it seems to more or less work.
