Title: Star Craft II announced! Currently in late alpha
Post by: catwhowalksbyhimself on May 20, 2007, 02:55:02 PM
There has been speculation for some time that the nameless RTS being developed by Blizzard might be Starcraft 2, especially as they had bought the webstie http://www.starcraft2.com/ although there was nothing on it.

Well, it wasn't just a rumor.  Yesterday, Blizzard showed this game in development for the first time and the official website was unveiled.

Check it out!

Looks really cool.  Now if it's anywhere near as addictive as the first one, I may have to invest in a new system just for the sheer number of hours I'd spend on it.

Oddly enough, there's a bit of groaning and complaining about it in another forum I go to. Some people thinks the graphics don't look "gritty" enough.  Or that it looks too much like "Warcraft III in space."

I think they are crazy and should shut up before I kill them.  It looks fantastic, and the new units have me really excited.

I thought the original Star Craft was just War Craft in space, but that's what made it great for me...I'm not a fan of the Fantasy Genre (I own War Craft II and III but rarely play them), but I loves me some Sci-Fi.  This game looks great!

is starcraft3.com still for sell?  :P

Nope.  Looks like a domain squatter already got to it.

These quotes tipify the blizzard forums and many of their fans at time. Warcraft III in space? Madness... THIS IS STARCRAFT! *cough*

It doesn't look anything like Warcraft III, that game looked so big & blocky at times it was awful. These look so much nicer. People simple want something to complain about, it wouldn't matter what Blizzard announced someone would find something to say negative.

Anyways I am excited, I downloaded and watched the trailers. The art one with a few minor glimpses of gameplay was so... so beautiful. You see some big Protoss walkers kinda reminded me of War of the Worlds but looked incredibly cool. There was also a big zergling rush, oh wow that has never looked so good. It looks like they will definitely be kicking the scale up a notch from that scene alone.

Something I am curious to see if they might implement are some of the setups from Warcraft III and elements from Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War. Dawn of War had a cool system for units, you could attach a hero to a squad and get a bonus which I liked. My favorite thing about it was that it was detailed enough you could pause and zoom in then just be blown away by it. It looks like this Starcraft game will have that level of detail as well. Though probably my favorite thing to see would be the instant kills & unique kill animations some of higher level units would do versus lower units.

i'm looking forward to see what the Archons look like now.  ^_^

Of course, I'm also looking forward to seeing if they sneak any Warcraft or Diablo units into the game.

gametrailers.com has several videos of the game in action showing off some of the new and/or improved units.

Not all units will be back though, for story reasons.  Dragoons are gone, for example, because Auir is gone, so no easy source of preserved dead Protoss warriors.  The remain Dragoons have been given heavier weapons and armor and are now called Immortals.

They also are introducing really powerful superunits which you can only have one of.  One of the videos shows off the awesome Protoss Mothership, which, among its other abilities, can open a black hole to such in enemy fleets.  Shoot, it takes out an entire fleet of Battlecruisers almost by itself!

Just let there still be an archon or something like it, oh please oh please. Though after the destruction of Auir they might not want so many of their templars sacrificing themselves, perhaps that might be a super unit as well then?

This game looks amazing, I'll give Blizzard a cookie for that. Now if only they could release Starcraft: Ghost along with it, that would be pretty cool. :)

FORIAMSPAM!

I'm still looking forward to this. Unfortunately, there are a lot of naysayers out there who don't think the graphics look good enough or gritty enough or think the game is too close to the original.  I think they're a bunch of trouble making idiots who should shut up and let me enjoy the game.

Fanboys can be a pain sometime.

Haha, I love your incredible, diplomatic personality Cat.   Seriously though, I rather agree with you, graphics don't matter nearly as much to me as gameplay.  Hence my love of classic games like the original TA, and my insistence on continuing to play them because nothing has surpassed them, despite flashier graphics.

Hey, the graphics do look to be pretty nice.  And the super-wonderful graphics games often don't sell as well, 'cause nobody has graphics card that can handle them.

while I agree graphics aren't nearly as important as gameplay, I have to say that it doesn't mean graphics aren't important. Graphics can really immerse yourself in a game if they are high quality, or really make you frown if they're terrible.

Take Neverwinter Nights 2 for example. Fun game? hell yes. But the graphics on my system aren't very compatible with the games high standards. So much so that it's a noticeable eyesore. And I'd find myself enjoying the game much more if I wasn't thinking "gosh, this game is hideous" during a lot of the game.

but SC2's graphics look awesome. I think people are more complaining about the style than the quality. A lot of fans apparently think the game is taking too much from WC3's "cartoony" look instead of a much more realistic, gritty, grim look. But to me it looks just like SC1 did, so I don't see why it's such a big gripe from some people.

i don't feel that SC2's graphics are all that "cartoony" to be honest, although the 3D *quality* is very similar, and to be honest, that's becuase it's basiclly the same modelers and art people working on this as were working on WC3. so you've got to expect that if you've got a lot of the same people on a project, there's going to be a similarity in the looks of the games.

i personally love what they're doing with the new models, there's a lot more animation in the units and buildings that just makes things feel more real, like the recoil of the big guns on the Thor unit, the transformation sequence of the viking attack craft.. the way the phase prism reconfiguires it's form when you deploy it to form an energy grid.. all these things make the units feel more alive, more real.

blizzard has always been about making the best overall gaming experience they can, and they constantly strive to improve the quality of their products. i bought the special edition of WC3 that included a DVD featureing all the in game cinematics for the game, as well as the cutscene cinematics for the rest of the warcraft series and diablo 2. when you watch those cutscenes, you can definatly see the massive amount of improvment that each game has over the last.

WC3's cinematics were stated to be the highest quality cinematics that they've ever put out, to the level that there were serious inquiries about them producing a feature length Warcraft film, and the main thing that prevents them from doing it is that they don't have a powerful enough render farm to finish the movie in a reasonable amount of time without basiclly self destructing.
