Title: New Comic Book - Pencils
Post by: Mowgli on May 13, 2007, 02:24:58 PM
Hey there! I have been working with a writer from this site on a full comic book for publication. It has been taking up most of my extra time for drawing, but I like the results. I am not at liberty yet to name the writer (he can come on in and name himself if he wants to) or the name of the comic (he owns the tilte). But I can say it involves superheroes and is a pretty cool concept. Here are some pencils for various panels. Let me know what you think! Any comments, questions and critiques are welcome!

Enjoy!  :D

PS- I'm 10 pages into the pencils and sending work to the inker already!  ;)

Awesome stuff... I'm always impressed by people who can draw fully-detailed crowd scenes, I usually get lazy after the third person or so  :D

As for critique... I'm not sure that switching perspectives in those last two panels works, such a drastic shift in the panel's "camera" might be a tad confusing for the reader (if those aren't sequential panels, though, ignore what I just said). Otherwise, real solid stuff. Can't wait to see more!

BTW, is that supposed to be Spud in those bottom two panels?

Yeah, I see what you mean about that being confusing. They are sequentials, one right after the other. I was trying to show how the heroes are completely surrounded, but it may have been too much, too fast.  I will stay concious of that on future pages.

It's not Spud, but a similar costume to be sure. Thanks for the input, it's greatly appreciated!  :)

Great pencils Mowgli! I'm really looking forward to seeing the inks.

I agree with drawing crowds can be mind numbingly dull. The worst part is trying to come up with different poses for each person! The baseball crowd scene in HB#2 springs to mind.

Apparently flipping sequential panels 180 degrees is a big no no in the biz...but I do it all the time any way. I haven't heard any complaints about it yet so I guess it's all good. :P

To make them look surrounded in one shot you could have zoomed out a touch and tilted the camera down to show more of the goons in the forground...but then that creates a downward perspective shot which is more complicated.

Looks real good Mowgli.  While I agree the 180 flip in the last two panels doesn't work so well, it might work better in color to help the eye follow the character placements.  Don't know if this is going to be a color book or not, but it's just a thought.  I'm really liking the character work on these.  Do keep us posted.

Hmmm...I wonder who this mysterious writer could be?  ;)

Hmm... Could this have something to do with a project a certain writer mentioned in some thread a while back?

C6: Thanks man! That means a lot coming from you. I have been slow going for a while, but seem to be picking up speed. An inker is getting the pages now and I can't wait to see them too!

GG: It will be in color. When the inker finishes with the pages, they will be sent to a very talented colorist. I am excited to see the finished product. I have never been part of a collaboration on this scale!  :)

Alaric: I think you may be on to something...

Zapow; I will let you share info about the project as you see fit...

Here's the very first page inked by my friend Jeff Austin. He did an awesome job on Mow's already great pencils.

Nice pencils, Mowg. The first inked page turned out great, too!

I'm looking forward to hearing more about this.

Great inks over some real tight pencils... it's nice that you guys are actually doing "analog" inking, it's getting rarer and rarer these days with the preponderance of Illustrator, GIMP, and Photoshop.

That looks incredible, Mowgli (and Jeff - wherever he may be). Couldn't expect any less from you anyway.

Can't wait to see the story unfold. If its coming from Zapow, its gotta be good.

Here's a little background:

The book is called Everyday Heroes and it is about a superhero temp agency. They cover for heroes when they need a break. Sick? They have you covered? Trapped in another dimension? No sweat. Dead? Your city will be safe until you're alive again.

The book takes place in the Spinner Rack Universe so you'll see the Honor Brigade show up here and there. This will be an all-ages color title. I'll be pitching it to publishers like Image to see if they are interested. Otherwise I'll publish it myself.

The main characters are:

Lily - A floramorph, able to transform into strange plant/human hybrids.
The Contender - A boxing themed hero rumored to be the spirit of underdogs everywhere...a golden age hero in semi-retirement.
Nappy - A wannabe gangsta with the power to make people sleep.
Payload - A former teen sidekick all grown up. His powers include flight, limited invulnerability, and explosive punches.
Powergamer - The world's greatest video gamer. The game companies designed a power suit that's capable of bringing characters from their games to life as hard light projections and Powergamer wears it as their corporate champion.
Maximum - Heart throb to ladies the world over. The world's most loved hero. His powers are great strength and flight.
The Theory - This retired former hero runs EH. He's known for his detective skills.

Here are some links to learn more about EH.

Here's the finished colors on the first page. I was lucky enough to land a great colorist who has been working on many of DC's books lately.

Sorry I can't come up with anything more coherent, but I'm seriously liking how this looks.

I agree - looks like there's going to be 2 comics foor me to buy soon!

But why do I get the feeling that the rather rotund boss-lady is going to turn out to be a villain?  ^_^

A DC colorist, you say? Nice!

That page looks quite amazing. I have to compliment the colorist's ability to portray ambient lighting. Looks wonderful.

Sara Heiney-Ramirez works for a company that did the colors in Birds of Prey and WWIII recently. She actually did the color many of the pages in the books but they were credited to the company.
