Hi yall i found the game (#1 not vs) a week ago (had played demo before never had full version) at my local (yet closing) Compusa for 15% off of like 10 usd or something so after playing the demo a year or so ago i decided to buy it. i just installed it like 30 min 1 hr ago and did a Google search while installing of the game to find... it on wikipedia which had a link to both this site/forum thingy and the wiki for it and i so far am enjoying this community after being here for like and hr or so  and that is a good sign in case you can't tell :D. anyways...
I was thinking of trying my hands at some custom characters not like the pre-made ones with powers and all but like the ones with animations and stuff (i am fairly technically literate even ran a world of warcraftt server with mysql and all (don't get me started on this just an example) but i don't know if this is a mesh or skin) and i would like some ideas on a good program to try my hand at it on preferably free but if there are no good ones i can find hopefully one that's paid cheap, community college book stores have some good programs for students (i hope to start in fall or summer) anyways srry for rambleling... i can be reached via email or msn messenger at bf2rocks92@hotmail.com or aim at username dsas599 (i'll add these to my profile after this post wanted to get this done first)
Thanks for having such a great community out here and i hope to be a contributor in the future,
Dsas59 closing hailing frequency's ( srry always wanted to do that)
Oh yeah forgot srry for the excessive exclamation points (!) and as you can see i have a weird and sometimes funny sense of humor.
first of all:
wake up, dude (or girl, if you are)! show a little life ;)
but seriously, i just joined this community after lurking for quite some time, and can tell you....if you're looking for cheap/free, then this is the game for you!

3a) Tommyboy's meshes
if you're going to start making custom characters, you might as well start with a Tommyboy versatile mesh. It has all the accessories (cape, sword, guns, sunglasses, gloves, etc.) on it, you just use what you want and hide/delete the rest

6) FFX
This is the unofficial expansion pack. It adds new tons of attributes/powers, and allows you much greater flexibility in creating custom characters with unique powers/attributes. Pretty much everybody is using FFX for either FF1 or FFVTTR. I'm only using FFVTTR, so I'm not sure the latest version for FF1. I know version 3.0 and the 3.1 patch are available here - http://www.fundamentzero.com/ffx3/ (http://www.fundamentzero.com/ffx3/) - but you may want to post a request for the latest version in the Mods thread.
That's about it. Those links should get you started, the rest you'll have to dig up on your own or post questions here.

PS--One more thing. The sticky was lost when the boards went down, but there is an issue here called kitbashing, which the community generally frowns upon. In short, kitbashing is taking elements of somebody else's character and adding it to your own. For example, say you find a cool character with a blue outfit and you want it yellow. Changing colors of the outfit (using photoshop, etc.) would be considered kitbashing. Another example would be copying the head or body from one skin and placing it on another. Most artists will say something about kitbashing in the readme. Still, unless it says you may kitbash, you probably should err on the side of caution and not do it.
Obviously, this is the honor system. Nobody's going to check your harddrive. If you're just creating minions to beat up and the skins will never leave your hard drive, then no problem. The problem comes when you post a picture or try to share the skin with the community, as it is like you are taking credit for somebody else's work. Some people don't really care, but others take it personally. Senior members of the community can tell you more about it than I can, but my general rule is: display photos for critique, tips, etc. all you like (just make sure you comment that it is a kitbashed skin), but don't distribute them unless you have the original author's permission or unless it is an original creation.
I believe the FAQ on newpowerinc.com (link #1) goes into greater detail.
PPS--welcome aboard, it's always good see somebody newbier (is that a word?) then me!
EDIT--I think you also need a patch for FF1, but I don't know where to get it

Quotequestion tho is taking a skin and like making it lets say more colorful and adding loads of custom crap and putting it on a new model allowed? (or atleast not kitbashing?)
Yes, that would be kitbashing.
What Joemamma failed to mention is that kitbashing for your own personal use, without giving it to anyone else, is fine.
Also if you get permission from the original skin makers, that is also fine.
Anything installed with the game, you already have permission to kitbash, so feel free to play around with any of those things, just mention where you got the original should you want to release it.
thanks for the tips and he did mention most of that tho but thanks for clarifying it

For FF1, you'll want FFX 2.6.
QuoteEDIT--I think you also need a patch for FF1, but I don't know where to get it
If you're using Windows XP SP2, you might need the v.1.3 beta patch which correct a crashing issue:
http://games.softpedia.com/progDownload/Freedom-Force-beta-Patch-Download-6012.html
Otherwise, the official v.1.2 is available from http://www.freedomfans.com/ffpc/downloads.php
And welcome aboard!
Thanks for the correction Epi & Cat.
I also should have mentioned that the base skins (link #4) were made for people to use and distribute. Be sure to include an acknowledgement, but you can use those skins to create your own characters and distribute them with the authors blessings.
