Title: Tomorrow I become a molder of young minds... scary..
Post by: Cardmaster on April 10, 2007, 03:52:37 PM
So, my school goes from kindergarten through 12th grade, (I've been there since 6th) and in the middle school students are required to take a twice-a-week elective class. These classes range from dance to pottery and everything in between..
Because of my reputation as an animator, the supervisor of these elective classes has hired me to teach a class in animation...

It goes for seven weeks, twice a week on Wednesdays and Fridays and, uh, I'm a little scared...

Tomorrow's my first day..

I really want to do well and get all my students excited about this since it's something that means so much to me...
But.. these are 11-14 year olds.. and they can be very frightening...

Sigh. I hope it isn't like in those kiddie comedies where the substitute teachers get tied up in a closet and then get blamed when the room is torn apart by wild students...

ps. Evidently I broke 6000 posts recently... how sad.

I recommend administering one random beating on the first day. Yaknow, put the fear o' God into 'em. Make sure they know you could strike at ANY moment.

Children should live every moment of their lives in abject terror.

I have a feeling you'll do fine. Just remember to make your students swear they'll never reveal where they picked up that screen-licking habit.

Good luck!

I also recommend not following Spud's advice.

It's illegal in the US to give out random thrashings to kids and apparently to administrators, too.

I found this out after conducting a test and discovering that kids can't fly out windows and adminstrators can't breathe underwater through their fingers.  (The preceeding was a joke.)

Just like prison...

You'll do great, Cardy. The trick is to make 'em laugh. But don't let them walk all over you. It's a fine line, I know.

If all else fails, bribe the kiddies with a little food.

Bah, 14 year olds arn't that bad. It depends if they're girls or boys. Boys will be rude or just not work but girls! they'll talk non-stop all lesson.

You've got to get a balance between no-nonsense strict and fun. Shout , give detentions and whatever but show them that if they work and behave well you can relax and have a fun lesson.

Don't talk down to them, but still show you have authority. A difficult balance to have, but I'm sure you'll do fine.

Cardmaster?  Molding young minds you say...?  Some mistake surely...

Quote from: dictionary.com
mold...  verb...  to become or cause to become overgrown or covered with mold

Aha, that explains it...  ^_^

If I had gotten to this early enough, I would have recommended showing up to the first class with a stun gun, and explaining that it would be used on anyone that got out of hand.  Once the expected bravado claims that you're bluffing start, ask for a volunteer.  If that doesn't shut them up, then the poor sod, who *did* volunteer, flopping around on the ground most definitely will!

Hey all,
It actually went really well, I think... There's been some major complications involving technology and equipment (don't have what they told me I would) but I'm gonna try and get through it...
It's only 9 kids in the class, which is a great size, and I've even got two assistant types..? They're both students at Brown University (right down the street from my school), and I'm not sure what they're doing there, but they seem pretty cool. Heh.

The first class ended up being pseudo-lecture in set-up, focusing on character and story development in animation, with the kids breaking at the end to work on some little "character development" exercises I set forth for them..

So yeah, I have my second class tomorrow.. just need to figure out what I'm gonna teach..
