While I actually really liked the look of :ffvstr: in all its shiny comic book glory, once I got past the regular game and started doing more Rumble Room stuff, I realized (like others) that I missed the kind of dirty 'grungy' feel that the first game had.
Since I'm a bit lacking in the artistic skills, I decided for my first stab at skinning something to try my hand at something more...uh....boxy. So utilizing some free textures, and some manipulating in Photoshop, I whipped up a new look for the city's buildings.
Its really more of a proof of concept at this point as upon close examination edges and textures don't always match that well, but it definitely gives the game a different feel.
*As an aside, is there a way to give a building the 'random' attribute for skins without making it a character? Many of the buildings use the same texture, so it would be cool to have 2-3 versions of a building skin without having to duplicate the nif file for each different one -- I don't think there is, I'm just spitballin.

I like it! Great job!
yeah that definitely looks more grungy, more modern too, for some reason, cool stuff
OOH YES! I like that look. It's something I did for my mod as well (but only for a few buildings) and for another mod I was working. Yours surpass what I was working on though. Lovely :)
Yeah, it does look very good. I often contemplated doing this myself.
So many people complained about the bright cartoony buildings (which totally fits FF, when you think about it), this should be a well loved project. The better models of FFvsTR, plus realistic skins... It's the best of both worlds.
Its like way better times a thousand.
Sweet deals. Would work great in a modern/pulp style mod.
Awesome man, if you're done with those, I'd be really interested in getting them for my DCU mod. (they'd look good for Gotham, don't you think?)
Great stuff!
I'd love to see a rumble room map using these textures.
Great work.
I would totally use those textures for map making....
...if you ever release them publicly! ;)
JM
Thanks Everybody.
I'm glad people like em.
My plan is to release a set of them after I clean them up a little, and maybe make a few different variations.
That way people have some options as which ones to use.
I had a little time while dinner was cooking tonight, and ended up with this:
The Patriot City Jail (ironically using the Police Station .nif):

Here is to hoping you have a little time most nights because these look very cool and that city jail is amazing
This is rocking so far and obviosly it's an under-explored modification of the game, re-skinning buildings. Great work, please keep it up, please...
patriot city jail eh?
that could go great with a mod!!!
love the buildings man
Nifty! I really like the look of the jail. I would suggest doing a lil work on the lettering to give it some depth, but outstanding jorb!
Yeah I'm not totally happy with the "sign" on the jail.
I think you're right in that the letters need some work, but I also think that removing the wording entirely would make it more generic and universal for people to do other things with.
So my real life keeps taking up my time, so rather than doddle around I'm going to release what I've done so far for those who want to use them. While I think there is definite room for improvement (and actually updating the gloss maps at all), I'm pretty happy with my first go at skinning something.
There are several variations for all the generic city buildings, as well as new textures for the museum, the opera house, and a new prison texture that can be used on the police station nif.
They can be downloaded from my first (and only) yahoo group:

Below is a sample of some of them:

AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME!!!
Need I say more?
This is actually incredibly sweet... and I'm almost... Well I'm wondering if I can make a request. If not, that's cool, but if so PM me and I'll give you the details.
But yeah, these buildings are rocking my face off.
Consider my face rocked off.
On man..these are amazing.
and another face rocked off...i'm getting those soon
