Title: Spud's Art - Ghost of Calico (June 21st)
Post by: captainspud on April 09, 2007, 03:15:40 PM
It's sad that I produce art so infrequently that every time I post something, I can't find my old thread.

Sigh.

Aaaaanyway. I drew the Hulk.

No real reason.

Go me.

I've been indundated by school projects for four years and haven't had time to draw... I graduate in three weeks, and I intend to pick up the slack once I'm free. :D

Nice work. This looks like the ultimate result of World War Hulk, after he's torn Tony asunder.

I can almost hear the rant that comes right before this pic:

"What tha....?  You cloned Thor?!?  What are you, some kind of [expletive deleted]-hole with an ego that could blot out the sun?  Oh, wait, I forgot I was talkin to Tony - frickin - Stark!  That's like askin if Captain America still salutes the flag every morning.  What?  He's what?!?!!  He got WHAT!?!"

*glares at Tony, really closely*

"Ah, screw it......HULK SMASH!!!"

It's sad that the Hulk's waist is probably slimmer than mine

BRAVO on the draw-ring!

Like hte use of red and hte splatter.  It's very  "splutchy", for lack of a better term.  Legs look a little odd (the hips I think) but the arms and face work real well.

Yarr-- the left leg is anchored too far forward, I'm gonna fix that before I put it on my site, I've just been too busy this week. :)

One of my favourite cheesy villains: Swarm! :D

I cannot stress enough how sick I am of drawing bees... >_<

Sweet! Great Swarm, Spud. Nice to see that I'm not the only one with an affection for d-list marvel villains.

Wow! That's... absolutely the best rendition of Swarm I've ever seen (okay, I've probably only seen four or five renditions of this particular villain, but still...). You actually made the concept work visually. Very impressive.

That is sweet. The bees look pretty realistic, what with the darker shading. I like it. ASnd as I said before, this guy would make your skin crawl if you saw him in real life. Good stuff Spud. Keep it coming.  :)

I love it. Look at that one bee, all by himself.

The white outlines really up the creepy factor.

Wow, a very detailed creepy pic Spud. Half the time Swarm just looks like a really bumpy yellowish fellow covered in boils or something. Of course like you mentioned yourself you got sick of drawing bees so I think putting a lot of detail into Swarm over the course of a whole issue would probably drive someone over the edge.

I really like it. I mean reallllly like it.

The subtle texture in the cloak is a great touch BTW.

Frig-cken-sweetawsomeness!

That's really cool, Spuddy. At first I didn't know what it was, but then I saw the face in the hood. Quite freaky, but overtly awesome. ^_^

Bah, they're only "d-list" if you think of them as such. ;)

Great stuff Spudly, glad to see you're getting back into your art! :D

Title: Spud's Art - Ghost of Calico (June 21st)

This is something I've been working on for a couple months. My friend's friend is is in a band called "Ghost of Calico". The band is vaguely pirate-themed, and they've just picked up a new band member and recorded a new album after nearly breaking up. Soooooo... they asked me to do their CD art, and they wanted something with a pirate ship rising out of the water. Or something. They were kinda vague. ;)

Sooo, yeah. It took me a while to get it looking how I wanted it, but I'm fairly happy with it now. I was gonna send it off to their graphics people tomorrow, but first I wanted to drop it in here to get some opinions and make sure I didn't forget some blindingly obvious error before it goes off to be printed. Feel free to be blunt and brutal-- I want this as pretty as I can get it, and nobody improves when all they hear is "that's great!". :)

That's great!

Heh. No seriously I like it but that shape in the middle doesn't read "pirate ship" to me.

It is really gorgeous.  The coloring is perfect and haunting.  I agree with Em that the it's difficult to tell that the ship is a ship.  Before you mentioned it in your description, I couldn't tell what it was.

I think I see what Jeebs means. The sail connected to the...uh...the pointy thing out front(I know what's it's called, but damn if I can remember at 3am) looks out of place. It throws off the shape of the entire thing. Replace it with a smaller fluffier sail closer to the middle maybe?

it really kind of looks like a paper airplane sticking out of the top of the mast, and it's edges look sharp when compared to the smoothness of the other sails.

Yeah, I agree that the spinnaker sail is a little odd, but I also think reducing the amount of seaweed coming off the bowsprit would help - more wood and a more defined hull would make it more obvious it's a ship, IMO.  Maybe add a really creepy figurehead?

Still, the colors and the lighting are very evocative - I definitely get the "surfacing in the underworld" feel.

edit: And - oooo - I completely missed the skull clouds on the first glance.  Very nice.

Thanks a ton for the feedback, folks!

(refresh your page if you're still seeing the old version)

-Made the boat's silhouette more distinct
-Erased some of the seaweed
-Added a figurehead
-Added a pirate flag
-Turned the front sail into two smaller sails

Any better?

Much imrpoved. I really like the light effects.

My suggestions would be to break up the strands of seaweed towards the front of the ship, one piece looks like one long strand from the top of the two sails all the way to the bottom of the ship. Everything seems pretty dark as well, but I'm guessing either my monitor is making it dark or maybe that's the effect you're looking for. The two figures on the right are hard to make out.

Fixed the seaweed.

The printing folks will adjust the brightness and such when they get it. It's dark on my end too, but I'm not sure how much of that is my ancient monitor.

That is an absolutely amazing piece of art there. Well done!!!

Very nice stuff.  One or two quibbles.  The two people on the right rock...the guy on the left...his left hand is...wierd? humungous?  Something about it isn't right.  Also, those people on the right rock seem to stand out a bit too much.  They're too clear, or bright, I dunno.  They seem to be floating on the picture as opposed to being part of it.

Muuuuch better.  It's gone from "um . . . it's a boat?" to "oh! a pirate ship"

And here's my quibble - the guy in the foreground should have a wooden leg.  I have no particular "artistic" reason for saying this, I just think it would look cool.

Another question -- where do you/they plan on putting the text?  (band name, album title)

The biggest chunk of blank space is at the bottom, which is not a good place for text.  It's not easily viewable when flipping through a typical CD rack in a store.  The top of the pic has that nice ghost cloud which you don't want words splashed over...so...where would you put it?

Awesome work, you should really bundle the image as a mini-poster to go with the CD, since the standard-sized CD sleeve will probably be too small to do justice to the image.
