Title: Petition to uncensor a word
Post by: captainspud on March 27, 2007, 11:50:26 AM
The forums currently censor the word B A D A S S as the rather corny word "hardcase". Most of the other censoring I agree is a good idea, but that word is hardly offensive and it's something I've seen a lot of people try to use, which kinda tells me it's something they wouldn't even think would be a problem.

Can we maybe get this uncensored?

I'm with spud on this one. As I recall, this word applies to Bruce Lee, Mr. T and several others. Hardcase, however, is a character from Supreme.

I'm all for it.

Any chance we can censor the word `Spud', instead?  :P

Having just had it happen to me, I also agree

I concur. I would also like to suggest censoring the word 'Hardcase' so that it now says 'B A D A S S'.

I would suppose you could make an argument that it's contextual.  In reference to a member of the equine family, it's perfectly reasonable.  Even biblical.

But since the censor doesn't work contextually, I would think that one ought to stand.

There's no contextual argument that can possibly be made for the original word referenced in this thread, unless you're referring to a naughty member of the equine family.  Which thought in and of itself possibly ought to be censored.

Well, I suppose my problem is that BA does not seem to fit the standard mold of censorship. Looking beyond the standard moral drivel of cusswords in general, the main reason for censorship is not to give offense. the B, P, F, S, and yes even A (sorry UFB) words are, in most cases, primarily used for derogative statements. Their meanings even, when examined, are used to demean a person or persons.

However, as BlueBard points out, BA has no meaning aside from it's meaning in general society, and that meaning is "cool, great, outstanding, etc." There is no reason that a word used primarily as an uplifting term should be considered a cussword, other then moral zealotry.

This is not to day I don't respect whatever decision the mods/admins make on this. As the rules state, this is a family-friendly forum, and there is a predisposition in many parents to view morals with some over-excitment, and that isn't nescessarily bad. And while we just think about what's eaisiest for us, they have to think of the boards.
