Title: Casanovas Penciling Adventures! Not my artwork....!
Post by: Blkcasanova247 on March 27, 2007, 09:26:33 AM
Hey there Freedom Forcers,
What's goin' on? Casanova here just sayin' "howdy" and also wanting to share some of the things I've been working on lately. So there mostly pencils for character designs for skinning projects and a couple av revamps. So without further ado......
Revenent Redux...'bout a month or so he requested a redesign for his AV and this is what I came up with for him....

speakin' of Rev....these two are from a series of my vision of "Ultimate" Titans that I requested for skinning.
This buxom beauty is for a request Yellow Lantern made for a silver age Rogue.....she comes from my facination with Pin-Up & Bond Girls. So she's like an early to mid sixties femme fatale who revels in her powers; she's a "Bad Girl" with a soft side.
This past weekend I actually had enough courage to color something. Since my knowledge on Photoshop is pretty limited I did this in colored pencils(I haven't used this or any color medium in close to 10 years), scanned it into my system then experimented with photoshop...and this was the end result.
And finally this was for Unle Yuan.....a little redux on his AV per a request he made.
Things I'm working on.....nothing to show yet on that front but the short list is a redesign of Casanova and Little Bird(my wife)......two team drawings; Invaders (my vision of that team) and The Original Avengers plus Cap....and My Captain America tribute. My stuff right now I know is a little static but I am branching out slowly but surely. And I've set my personal goals this year to just get better at what I love doing and have fun and look good doing it.

Yeah, these are just great. And that coloured pencil Rogue? Gorgeous. You know just when to use the colour and when to leave empty space and it just looks fantastic.

Not to mention... all these designs are totally sweet. I'm jealous.

Theres some pretty neat stuff in there. You are fantastic with that pencil. I'm still recovering from the amazing Captain America sketch you did a while back!

Thanks for sharing!

I've already gushed in PM about my own av reworking, so let me just add another hefty "wow" for all the other work done here.

BC also had an interesting little spiel to explain some of the ideas he had for UY.  I'll add it here because I think it shows some pretty cool ideas for my av design that aren't immeadiately obvious:

QuoteThe staff is a branch from the "World Tree". It is provides light, it heals, it constantly grows herbs and flowers for sustenance, it absorbs energy and it can never cause harm. It also allows him to use more of his dragon abilities and projects "The Breath of the Dragon" through his right hand.

UY redesign is absolutely amazing!  And the colors on Rouge are perfectly done in my useless opinion ... I could gush about each and every one of them, but Longshot has to be my favorite!  Great work all around.

O_o

Wow. Brilliant start there, cas! I love Uncle Yuan, (very busy and clean! Applause) but most of all I love Revenant. He's just such a freaking cool redesign! Wow. Oh, and your coloring start is very reminiscent of an artist whose name eludes me right now :D

Did I mention Wow? Wow.

Nice start, and can't wait to see more! Draw to your hearts content, sketch like noones watching and most of all...look after your heart! ^_^

Here's prelim pencils for Juancho's LORD JAY!
I kinda wanted to get a bit of a multi-cultural feel with the outfit. I kinda dug the whole Atlantis being the cultural hub of the know world, so I hope that's reflected in this sketch. Next stop for it will be color.....during the week. Todays agenda is to try and finish my "Artistic Challenge" Sketch....and work on a couple of more redesigns floatin' around in my skull....Glitch Girl, Renegade and Style! We'll see how the day progresses.

So back in Feburary I requested skins from Rev of "Ultimate" Titans; He was doing a lot of "Ultimitized" characters then and I figured...why not? Here are a couple more concept sketches I came up with for this project.
First up...Beast Boy
(http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n172/blkcasanova247/Cyborg.jpg)
Cyborg
(http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n172/blkcasanova247/Raven.jpg)
Raven
(http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n172/blkcasanova247/UltNightwingRedux.jpg)
My fave of the bunch...Nightwing...which is a redo from a couple of weeks later. I hated the original I did.
And finally....Supergirl.
I'm actually thinking to redo these...I want to do them larger with some more detail. Now I can see some problems with them that I didn't see then. There is one more Titan that I'm not showing 'cause it came out "HORRENDOUSLY"...that'd be Wally West as "The Flash". Yeah...I'll redo them...Anyway coming soon...my version of Glitch Girl!

For some reason I really really like that Supergirl design. It's such a simplistic, classic looking super hero costume, with those little extra touches to kick it up a notch. I love that sort of look, but don't see it often enough.

Those are some nice colours, too. Very solid, without being blocky... if that conveys the meaning I... mean.

These are some amazing redesigns.  I love how GG looks like a totally new character and yet you know that it is GG ... does that make any sense at all?

Your pencils are spectacular and the designs are great as well.  I'm not one for tattoos usually, but those wings on GGs mid-driff look perfect.

Edit:  And maybe J5 doesn't always work properly when she needs it the most ...

Finally got to see the redesign.

I like it.  Especially the shades.  :)  It's got a nice techy look but still has a practical aspect.  The robo Buddy J5 is a nice touch.  I cannot WAIT to see it in color.  Already saved a copy for my personal collection.

BTW: perfect timing.  My birthday's tomorrow.  ;)

I have to say I prefer the orange to the green.  It's a bit of a nod back to her original costume, and it isn't fighting with the background like the green.  And after giving it some thought, I don't think I'd change my mind if the background was changed.  :P

They're both great, but I'd have to go with the green, myself, if only because the red tattoos don't look quite right with the orange.

I am also a green machine, but I am partial to the colour.

I'd suggest, however, orange costume with green tatoos.

I agree with UnkoMan. The tattoos would look great green with the orange costume trim. Personally, I would have gone with some sort of glowing binary coding tattoos.

I love your work. I'm shocked that this is the first I've seen of it.

It's pretty much a win-win decision, but I too think the green on green is a little harder to see than the orange on green.

These are both keepers BC.  I gotta go with the orange though.  I started with browns and oranges in the original costume and I kinda like that.

Something a little more bluish or greenish on the tattoos might be cool to try.

Thank you so much BC.  Again.  :) This is very cool.

ooh, very nice!  My only critique (and I only speak up when something strikes me as not flowing properly) is the sword hand.  I don't think it's even physically possible to grip something cylindrical like that, and keep the fingers spread.  Spherical, yes, but every time I tried closing my fingers around something like that (tried a hand axe, a dagger, a long sword, and a claymore), they all grouped together.  Granted, my arms don't bulge nearly as big as his, though.  ;)

Casanova, that is awesome to degrees that I will never be able to express. You're absolutely right, I do like the direction you went with him, looks absolutely brilliant. evil oppression really stands out there.

If i may be so bold to say, I think thats your best piece yet.  ^_^  :P

Cas your skill is improving so much!  I remember wowing over those initial sketches, these are even more impressive!  Nice work.

One thing about Raven, I sort of liked her top better before.  The new one is nice but it makes me think of Wanda's Scarlet Witch costume that George Perez drew her in the Avengers/JLA crossover.  The initial one with the chest window was distinct... and I thought the tatoos were in character as well.  Also I miss the details on her boots, but practicality should rule if you are going for the Ultimates feel.  Still, I am a big fan of small details like that.

Supergirl looks.... super!  What else can I say?  I'm looking forward to seeing more!  And to seeing some hexes for 'em...

I might very well be wrong on this one, so feel free to correct me as needed.  ;)

As I don't read current stuff, is Roy being depicted as having all of his shafts unfletched?  Or is it something I'm missing?

Also, the right hand looks.....off to me.  In a pose like that, I'd expect his hand to stay in line with his forearm, or perhaps even to rotate towards the body a bit (at the wrist)....but it almost looks like it's rotated away from the body, which would make holding that pose much harder, and less natural.

Panther my man...thanks for your critique. I'll take another look at it....I'm pretty sure that this won't be the last time I revisit this character. I quite like him! ;) And you're absolutely correct...although this is not definitely not Roy's "Red Arrow" or even his previous "Arsenal" look...his arrows are all unfletched...hmmmm..makes ya wonder were those damned feathers coulda got to huh! Well my thinking is he's "special" target seeking arrows with tiny retractable wings built in. His "glasses" house several micro cameras that record everything he sees and the lenses are a HUD; he can designate a target by a single verbal command or by clicking a small button on his bow that then "paints" his target with a built in laser sight. My version of Roy has tech up the wazoo and the pocket wad to pay for it. :D  Maybe I'll actually start giving the backgrounds and motivations I was thinking of for these guys.

Some nice looking sketches there... but a suggestion, if you don't mind one coming from me:

on the archer (Roy Harper), you'll want to re-visit how his deltoids (shoulder muscles) cling to his frame. The pectorals (chest muscles) should be almost contiguous with the deltoids up until two-thirds of the way down... as it stands right now it looks like they connect only at the very top (this is especially pronounced on the right shoulder). Check out this classic muscle study (http://www.lionden.com/VesaliusMuscleBody.jpg) by Versalius to see how the chest and shoulder muscles are related anatomically.

Man, you know what a big fan I am of your work - I can't wait for Cyborg!

I'm going to echo PG on the hand - also, a "proper" grip on the string is behind the farthest set of knuckles, not the middle.  That being said, I have no idea how it's shown in the comics.

Hey there folks,
It's been a spell since the "ole" Casanova posted anything new in this thread. Work, RL and some skopin' projects have been gettin' in the way. But here's a little something that I finished sketching and 'skoping a few days ago for Rev to skin for our "Ultimate" Titans...It's a "re"redesign of Raven.............
There is a little background I came up with for her and the other Titans which I'll post later with a new sketch that I'm finishing for a redesigned Wally West Flash.

first of, I love your style, very nice work and very creative, but I do have to mention wally just isnt wally for me unless he has the streaming lightning >_> I know i'm just being fussy, but right now he just makes me think quicksilver or speed demon, not knocking either of those speedsters, but they dont have the same presense as the flash, igf ya know what I mean? none the less it's still a very nice piece of work, keep it up ^_^

Thanks fellas. :D And for the most part Syn I agree with you....but my concept for him isn't quite the same as DC's Wally. To some extent I guess "Ultimizing" is "Marvelizing" so in that respect that's what I've set out to acheive and succeeded. Yeah me! I also wanted to give him a kind of "uniformed" look rather than a "costumed" look (if that makes sense) and also more practical maybe even a little militaristic. But with some color he'll really stand out. I just finished the skope for him so he'll be off to Revenants' "paint-works" for a beautiful skin job. Rev has done such an amazing job bringing my concepts to life so I want again to give him a big thank you.

I really like the Brainiac symbols on her shoulders. I also like how grown-up and cool she looks. It a nice sleek design and I love the use of the Kingdom come S symbol. I've also been fond of that symbol.

Carravagio...Triumphant!
Or Carravagio just beat the tar out of a whole bunch of Courtnall6's from all over time. My collabortator Afghan Ant did a beautiful color job on this. So check out the calendar folks. I can't wait till 2008 to work on the next one.

It shows a marked improvement from the anatomy of your earlier work. Still, you might want to take up figure drawing just to get your fundamentals down. If you can't convince any of your friends or relatives to pose for you, you can try drawing from photographs or from a mirror.
Title: Re: Casanovas Penciling Adventures! WHAT I'VE BEEN UP TOO.
Post by: Blkcasanova247 on December 13, 2007, 06:36:51 PM
Thanks Zulu for the compliment and the critique. I've actually started doing the latter of your suggestions.....I've been "striking a pose" in front of my bedroom mirror and also taking some really bad pictures of my self and begging my wife to do the same for some quick sketches. This piece I just drew from my head with no reference at all....I was just feelin' it y'know. I was struggling with several ideas...none of which made me happy then I drew a boot and worked the piece backward...go figure. There are several things I would correct now after looking at it with fresh eyes...but I'm still happy...which is more than I can say for a lot of the stuff that ended up in my recycling bin! :P Next are character designs and load screens for C4's new mod...some more forum member redesigns...top of my list being GGiant and a new version of Style that I'm itching to sketch...and character redisgns for my own FF mod. Oh and "Casanova's Fight Club"?

Frank drawing aside, it's the little design touches I love - CV in the Victorian style suit with the soul patch, all the little C6 emblems worked into the various manifestations, the tributes to the various comic archetypes, especially the war/flying aces genre.  (You need to work in a Doc Savage/Shadow style pulp fiction hero, though!)

Very, very cool stuff!

Wow...It's been a while since I posted. So...there are a couple of characters that I've never drawn..Batman being amongst them. But today I started drawing 2 versions....one for Mystik's planned Ultimate Mod and this one for my own reimagined DCU. So here's my vision of the Batman...member of the Justice League and leader of the League of Shadows.
