Title: Impending death of Guild Wars?
Post by: UnfluffyBunny on March 21, 2007, 02:27:50 PM
This is a personal rant and anything said is just my oppinion, i'm open to discussion but please dont just tell me i'm wrong without reason >_>
[rant]

Well, since day 1 i've had perfect trust in guild wars, and hated all nay saying.....

then... Guild Wars announces Guild Wars 2.... not a new chapter for GW, but a whole new game, completely seperate from GW where GW and it's 4 chapters (there will be another chapter released before GW2) have happened 100 years in the past.

When GW2 comes out... GW1 will basicly be abandoned, skill balances will happen "rarely" and events will happen "almost never"
GW1 characters will not be able to migrate to GW2.

So this means, GW1 will die... with "rare" attention from the creators, it will just crumble....

so what is there to look forward to in GW2?

Races: a needless addition but something players have been crying for, not needed IMO but I realise alot of people will like it.

Level cap... 100+: the thing i love about GW is the level 20 cap, it's always supposed to have been about the players ability rather than who has the most free time to grind.

Global mapping: no more instanced locations, everyone will be placed in the same map, I like being able to go out and not get killstealed, to not have to deal with someone doing the same quest as me in the same place, to go out where you know no-one else will be just to try a new build or take pics of your characters.

Z axis: you can jump and swim, sooooo their linear quests I love so much are kaput.

"living world" if a dragon flies overhead you can attack it, on its death, anyone who damaged it gets some xp, I just see this promoting camping and killstealing. if you dont kill it it destroys a bridge, and because you didnt kill it you personally have to help in rebuilding it otherwise the bridge is gone forever, and while this is happening you'll need to protect the village from bandit raids.... (so long casual gaming)

on the other hand WoW players will have a free to play alternative that dousnt look like flopsy bunny's cartoon land ¬_¬

this sucks.
i want GW for all it is. if i wanted WOW i'd figgin' play WOW.
i am not interested in this at all, i wont buy it, and i'll support the original. this is a kick in the teeth to people who have bough and supported all the games. why do it? they have a good thing going. this is depressing news indeed.

Soooo...they're getting rid of all the stuff that made Guild Wars unique and fun, ditching what little support for the old one there is, and making a free WOW?

So far, the only thing that looks good is the graphics. Pwetty. But that doesn't mean a wantons noodle if I can't bring my old characters to it, considering all the time and effort I've put into them. And heck, I'm attached to them

I can see why we shouldn't be able to...what with it being a hundred years in the future. But...RACES?! ARGH! What's wrong with them!? The development team were so adamant about there being NO races other than humans, or they'd have implemented dwarves and avica.

What a huge disappointment. I was hoping for better, and I think I'll stick with the old GW. I have a feeling a lot of us will still do so anyways, even with the updates and skill balances being pulled.

GW2 sounds like it will take some time to get used to... Oh well, it's still pretty far into the future for now.

if it's free to play still...i may be interested.  I haven't even played GW in a long time though...I remember I was planning to see if i could meet up with you guys some time, but school and skinning and a webcomic that I haven't updated in eons all made me forget about it.

So basically all the things I liked about Guild Wars is going to be gone, and it will be a (prettier) WoW clone?

Maaaaaan, I am so ticked that my computer turded out on me. I hardly got to nerd out with Guild Wars, but what I played I loved. If I ever get a better computer I will most likely go back and play it out. Heck, I might even go out and buy myself the other chapters. I'll look at Guild Wars 2, but probably not buy it ever.

Of course this is all just based on the rumours and the fact that I hardly ever even buy video games.

I will admit to playing diablo 2, infact I played it for years, d2 died the second world of warcraft came out, i don't think there has been a single patch since...... the only reason i bring up d2 is that alot of people who worked on d2 are now at guild wars... food for thought

PC Gamer's newest issue has a massive 14 page preview of GW2 and something called Eye of the North.  It's a little confusing because they keep talking about not developing more campaigns for GW1, but I think EotN is an expansion to any one of the GW1 campaigns.  GW2 however is a brand new game.

GW:EN (eye of the north) is an expansion to guild wars

they arent developing anymore campaigns for guildwars tho they havent said if GW:EN will be the last expansion realsed or not
campaigns being prophecies, factions and nightfall - with the last 2 adding more proffessions to the game
GW:EN adds no more proffesions to this game, tho it intruduces the asura (at least) as npcs which will be a playable race in GW2

*waits till the 26th so she can get her asura mimi :D*

hmm...how do you get pets, exactly?  Do you have to play on the day of your birthday?  or do you at least have to be active around the time of your birthday?

EDIT: something tells me you weren't talking about pets...

theres a mini asura pet with pcgamer or other pc mags (pczone in the UK)

and your character just has to turn a year old for you to get a birthday presetn which just appears in your inventory on that day if you are online or not

Okay, so far... I like what I'm hearing about the movement (z-axis and tree climbing maybe and stuff). I also hear there will still be no monthly fee.

They aren't going to have campaigns though. I actually really liked campaigns as opposed to a persistant world. It makes you feel more like you are super important. Good motivator.

The cap level raising thing and whatnot makes it seem like it will be even more full of hardcore gam0rz. But then again they won't be getting uber powerful.

I don't know. I'm now undecided. And you know what? I probably won't even get to play it anyhow.

I played GW briefly. I was heavily in WoW at the time (hey I got better).

Things I liked about GW:
1. The instances. It was nice to run around and quest and not have to deal with other people.
2. The ability to hire henchmen or whatever they're called. The ability to instantly have a group and get out into the world was a big bonus.
3. Combat. The combat was fast and furious and with the variety of skills it made for an interesting side game trying to maximize your toon.
4. The graphics. Absolutely amazing. 'nuff said.
5. A changing and evolving storyline. The world changed based on where you were in the storyline - which added a whole new dimension for gamers.
6. The interface. I loved the fact that you could "customize" the interface as you wanted.

Things I didn't like about GW:
1. The instances. Yes I liked them, but I also hated them. I could spend an hour running around in my instance and during that time I'd feel very disconnected from any kind of community that existed in the game. Entering into an area where I was suddenly thrown into a gathering of all the other players was very jarring at times.
2. The henchmen. Man were they just dumb.
3. Combat. Aggro basically meant nothing in the game. I found that the only way to hold aggro on mobs in the world was to be a healer. Healers didn't seem to have to heal others in the party - because they were too busy trying to keep themselves alive since they're the ones taking all the damage to begin with.
4. The interface. All of the windows were too Windowsy. Considering that the game is a fantasy setting, I'd expect the interface to "feel" fantasy-world-ish. For example, fonts for quests were in arial (or some modern day equivalent) as opposed to some script that looks fantasyish. The interface just added a sense of disconnectedness from the game world. It was a bit odd.
5. The capes. I couldn't stand these...at....all.
6. No Z axis movement. I'm a jumper. I must jump.
7. Too linear pathing. I felt that everywhere I went in the world I was on some invisible rail. There were times I wanted to cut across some terrain, and even though it looked as if I should be able to, the railroads kicked in and I was faced with invisible walls.

Personally, from what I've heard of GW2 I think it's fabulous.  The only thing that concerns me is the level cap. 20 to 100 is a huge leap. GW is certainly a casual online rpg - and that's a good thing. I'm all for the game becoming more immersive but 100 levels just seems like grinding is gonna play a big part in leveling. Something I don't really care for.

I can't say I'll play GW2. Between City of Heroes and Lord of the Rings and other games I'll be hard pressed to have time during my gaming hours, but it's my opinion that GW2 will be a vast improvement over the first one in many ways.

I don't know how long ago it was that you played GW but some things have changed during its existence:

On 2: These days you have your own little group of hench (max of 3) that you can give weapons and runes, most importantly you can give them a customized skillbar. Basically these guys kick just about every human player's behind and make most of the game ridiculously easy, as long as you know how to set up the right skills.

On 5: You can turn off capes in PVE, they are still needed in PVP which to me is understandable.

On 6: Well, that really never bothered me to be honest. Same with linear pathing, I guess I just like being taken by the hand. Though it's a tempting thought to have an open world to explore, after trying out games like X3 Reunion and Oblivion I discovered it's probably not my thing.

On your other points, well no game is perfect and I can understand where you're coming from. I stopped playing it recently and haven't felt like going back yet, still, if it's been a while since you played it, you can always try it out again. Thank god for free play. :D
