Title: Tommyboys meshes, new releases.
Post by: tommyboy on March 19, 2007, 09:25:54 AM
First FF release in a while.
As requested: Tom_basic_Fingers.
Can be hexxed to a thin or a muscular version contained within. Or just delete them in NifSkope to keep filesize down.
He's compatible with Male_Basic and Male_Cape type animations, and contains the bones and dummies for if you want to nifskope in a cape.
Comes with my "flyer" keyframes, now with five added "flying_melee/hover_flying_melee" animations, and two of TaskmasterX's hexxed flying_melee versions of the Starfox and Falcon keyframes from previous releases of mine.
He's compatible with male_basic type mapping, the fingers simply map onto where the fingers went before, so no alterations needed.
I hope you like him.

Awesome Tommy!  When you said 'it would probably be a while,' I was thinking, alright, maybe in the next few months....nope, a couple days.  You're ridiculously awesome, do you know that?

Just a thought.

No.
I made the _tv meshes with 300 hexxable parts (including no_face, flat face, half face), and then people requested "just basic" versions.
So I made "just basic" versions.
I'm not now going to release 60,000 different versions as people start requesting "can you add a gun?" "can you add a cape?" "can you add a belt?" etc etc etc.
Either hex a TV or tvlite mesh, or NifSkope the parts you want from a TV or tvlite mesh onto the fingered version.

Here is the tom_female_basic_fingers_heels (also contains a version without heels), which has about six hairstyles within it too.

I really, really like the change you made to this new models feet.  It looks much better and I will be moving all my tvlite guys to the new tvlite_fingerless because of that alone.  Thanks, Tommy.

Thanks, Tommy.

Hey IPS, anybody with NifSkope can generate a UV Map.. just left click the mesh, go to the right hand menu, and right click the object to bring up a menu.. select Texture, then the only option available (i think its 'generate something'), it will allow you to save a targa file of the resolution of your choosing.  Load it up in your image editing software and you got a wireframe!

Er.. sorry to threadjack tommyboy  ^_^!
Title: Re: Tommyboys meshes, new releases.
Post by: tommyboy on May 14, 2007, 02:59:43 PM
The uvmap is female_basic compatible, but as Revenant says you can get one via nifskope.
Except the hair which is sort of a blob...., but you can again use nifskope.
The hair is physiqued to the cape nodes, so it would be female_basic_cape if you wanted to animate her. (just a cape_top, cape_bottom_left,cape_bottom_right bones and dummy_cape_bottom_left and right, but I'm sure you know all that).
If you have any problems with her let me know here or via PM. I can email you a uvmap/biped or whatever you might need.

It's from what I imaginatively called civilian_versatile, which got released as the_spirit_tvlite a while back.
Angel is a resculpted version of my new fingered mesh with a custom made higher poly head (so I could actually attempt a sculpted likeness), with the new coat/sleeves/pants legs, and some new hair.
Although I'm quite happy with how the photoskin looks, I am also trying to actually hand paint(digitally of course) a likeness in the skin.
I'm just working my way through the first 3 seasons of Angel on DVD (having burned through all 7 Buffy seasons over the last 2 months), and seriously contemplating a Buffy/Angelverse Mod, so expect to see more Whedonesque meshes and skins.

Man I loved Buffy and Angel, especially Angel, such a fantastic show. I have the first 3 seasons, need to get the last two.

Anyway, good work Tommy, but he's gonna need a sword or an axe or something. Angel was usually well armed.

redid the hair modelling, tweaked the head shape, and am finally getting a likeness on my painted skin (the left one, as if you need to be told).

And theres not much point in having Angel unless you also have a mesh for Angelus/his vampire form:

Thats just the normal skin, I'll adjust it to be a bit more vampiric, but I think the modelling works rather well.
The idea is that the normal model will have shapeshifter and the vampire model will be a tempform.

I think it's the blue-black hair too, Tommy...Her hair should be more a dark brown color, than black.  The blue-black makes it look cartoony in relation to her more realistic photo-skin face.  The hair on your Angel skin is perfection.

I was wondering if you would be able to make

he uses the cape and just looks evil

I just downloaded em.  Thank you so much for these Tommyboy!!!  The skin on Hulk is awesome.  I like how you gave him seperate toes, it really looks tons better.  The hair lokos great too.

Red Tornado, what can I say that hasn't already been said?  You knew I'm gonna go into Nifskope and animate those whirlwinds, right?   ;)

WOW!!! These new meshes look amazing Tom.   Red Tornado's whirlwinds and the toes on the Hulk!   You are getting more skilled with each and every mesh.   My only regret is that I just don't have the time to dissect and play with them in NifSope because of RL.   But again Tom, just WOW!

At the moment firebrand(2) has no flame FX built in. They can be added via FFX or even Nifskope if people are desperate to see her with flames.
All the meshes are exported with the FF exporters meaning that they will work in FF and FFV3R (though some will need to be nifconverted for FFV3R use).
I'll be trying to upload some of them later today I hope, if RL doesnt get in the way....

i REALLY like that new Alan Scott Tommy.
The cape looks like its just draping off his shoulders.   - going off to download right now -

actually Tom,  I'm having a bit of trouble getting his keyframes to work.  unconverted he crashes ctool.  mesh converted kf's not, he ends up with empty kf's,  and fully converted (mesh and kfs) i still get empty kfs when i open him up in ctool.  any idea what the issue could be?

Must be either my computer or internet connection then, because it always takes at least a day or so for your meshes to show up after you've released them.   With the exception of the Atom, the rest of your meshes on this last release began showing up for me this morning with the Hourman mesh finally showing up for me about an hour ago, it looks cool, but it didn't come with any keyframes.   Are there any that you recommend?

Oopsie...forgot Rex's kfs.
I like both Renegades and Grenadiers "super" type keyframes, and you cant go far wrong with Beyonders Azbat for male_cape, just because of the number of choices. I tend to use an altered version of Grenadiers' super keys with my added cutscene "special" anims, which I think should be shipped with my Captain_Marvel_tf for Hourman. I suppose ideally he'd have a keyframe set with a "pop a miraclo pill" animation.
Plus Renegade did a super-cool version of him, the keyframes of which would most certainly Rock.

Dude,
Your meshes rock! I wanted to thank you for the Micronaut meshes you made. I was waiting forever for someone to make them, and now that you have, I've been using them ALL the time.

Is there a chance at some point you can make a few Acroyear color variants to give us a few evil Acroyear warriors to fight?
Regardless, keep up the great work and thanks!

Hey Tom, sorry to be such a pest. But I was wondering if your Atom mesh had been loaded up yet or if it was just my pc/internet connection that's just causing it not to show up yet?   Also, I still had trouble with Hourman, I couldn't get him to work regardless of which keys I used.   Otherwise, I'm really loving the rest of the meshes and looking forward to the next batch.   I really appreciate all your hard work, and all the time and effort that you put into each character.   Thank you.

Sorry, although I uploaded the Atom mesh, I didn't link the picture to the mesh, so it wasnt downloadable. It's fixed now.
I'll check Hourman_tf, and if necessary re-export and upload him, with keyframes in the next few days..
Title: Re: Tommyboys meshes, new releases.
Post by: tommyboy on July 21, 2007, 04:00:55 AM
Just checked Hourman_tf, and he works with the following keyframes:
omac by Grenadier
azbat for male_basic by Beyonder
kung-fu by Valandar
male-basic_batroc by Grenadier
green_lantern_test by Renegade
mb_ren_super by Renegade
whirlwind69 by bobby69(vertex)
male_cape_nighthawk by Grenadier
mb_cosmic boy69 by bobby69(vertex)
generic_hero by Irrational

Now, I'm not going to test every single keyframe set I've got, because i'm satisfied that the mesh is male_basic/male_cape type keyframe compatible, as it works with a variety of keys made by a variety of sources.
What he WONT work with are my _tv keyframes, vertexes VX keyframes, or any keyframes that have extra bones.
EDIT:

The new ones have a mapping that has the fingers properly mapped, the old ones didn't.
The new Superman_tf will make an appearance within the week...but other than new fingers and cape, he's not hugely different from the _tv version at the moment...

Yes and no.
Yes if you use the first Thor_tf, but you will need to rename the skins parts, ie thor.tga to male_basic.tga, and cape.tga to cape_t.tga (and rename the _refl and _glow). Also, Beyonders mesh had the eyes mapped to a different place, so some skins made for his mesh would look like they have no eyes on my mesh.
For the Thor_new_tf you could do the same, but there would be little point

I said it before, those are amazing!  These will be really fun once they're all modded in... Are there some kind of particles emmited from the cosmic cube?

Yes, but I'm not sure they work in-game properly...

Man Tommy!  When Cyber Burn called me up and said I had to pull up your thread "RIGHT NOW!", he wasn't kidding!  I had always wanted to put together a map that was a sort of "Trophy Room" I guess, with all the major weapons and items of both Marvel and DC, but that had always been an unrealistic goal because I couldn't map, and the pieces didn't exist.   But this may be possible now.   Well, maybe for someone who actually knows how to make a map, but still, these are awesome!   Any chance for others of the sort?   Captain America's shield, Thor's hammer, Batman's cowl?

Iron Man's helmet (fond of the first few, myself)?
A Golden Lasso?
A Giant Penny?
A City in a Bottle?
The Mask of Loki (The Mask)?
A Crystal Skull?
A Black Slouch Hat?
A Tricorder?
A Flagon with a Dragon?
A Black, Rune-Etched Sword?

Can't Captain America's shield, Thor's hammer, Iron Man's helmet, a Golden Lasso, and a Black Slouch Hat get exported from exisiting meshes via nifskope?  As for a  Tricorder, I believe Tommy's Trek_t mehs has one , and couldn't someone skin a Black, Rune-Etched Sword after exporting it (if that in fact is possible)? Just asking.

A giant Penny can be made by enlarging and re-skinning the belt buckle from a VX mesh.

A crystal skull could be done using any skull-headed mesh, by changing the Alpha property

Whose black slouch hat are we talkin about?

Hey Tommy I just downloaded this and all your other "TF" meshes and let me just say great job. One thing kinda bugs me though about Thor...it's the helmet wings...they're just not right.
I hope that you don't think I'm just being picky 'cause I certainly don't have the skill to do it myself but I think if you slightly reshaped the wings off your other Thor mesh you'd be closer to the look than what you currently have on him. Just my opinion... ;)

just want to drop a line saying thank you for the world_war_hulk_tf mesh.  i love how you made all of the WWH extras onto a seperate tga file, and all alpha'ed already!  i just dropped in all of my other hulk skins into the mesh,  with an empty tga file to alpha out the extras, so i can randomize which version of hulk i want.
And then theres the keyframes!  Sweet lord thats the most comprehensive set for the hulk made i think.  what i did was change all of the leave_hand in the area attacks to contact,  and then renamed the area anims as area_a,_b etc.  so i'll have a randomizing area attack with a 360 degree melee!

SWEET.

You may be right about the wings, I dithered quite a bit whilst making them. With only a couple of issues out, and the artist being a little inconsistant throughout, it was a case of "pick a picture and decide", which is what I did.
The ones I settled on seemed closest to the majority of pictures I used for reference, but theres always an element of interpretation in translating from 2d to 3d, unless you get an actual blueprint.

Tommy!  You continue to astound me man, I don't know how you find time to eat, much less sleep the way you turn out quality meshes like this....not to mention that your standard skin continue to improve, in my opinion.  I am gonna' have to replace what I'm using for half of Darkseid's elite now, thanks to you! ^_^  Really amazing work on them, and great work on these new three too.

That Kanto is fantastic, I've been toying with skoping him for a while, with really poor results.  I'm glad I don't have to try anymore!

Granny Goodness....hmm...something seems a little off about her, but I can't put my finger on it...perhaps it's the hair?  Regardless, that's one of the best faces I've seen you do, she just looks so....mean and crotchety!

Great work on Stompa too, she's got the heaviness right, looks the right size which is important for her.  One question though, in that image, she's got a biker-style helmet, is one hexable with that mesh?  If not, cool, she still looks pretty awesome, but that would make her even more menacing.  It'll be nice to use an actual female mesh for her...I always felt weird having her on male_heavy....

Amazing Grace....well...fantastic rendition, really perfect.  You even got the sash around her waist, but now I have to go look her up and add her in....darn you.... :D

I LOVE that Lashina, great to actually have her lash built into the mesh now....like your Trok rendition...I have some ideas about how to incorporate that into her character....longer ranged melee attacks....good stuff!

Now, my favorite, Steppenwolf.  Tommy, I think this is the best mesh and the best skin I've seen from you.  Perhaps not your best ever, but the best in my memory.  Really fantastic work, capturing all the intricacies of a very complex design and the skin really does it justice.

Vermin, man, awesome to have a dedicated mesh for this little weasel, great face work on him as well!

The last one I'll comment on is the Bug Eyed Bandit.  Haha, you even got his little goofy squiggly thing on top of his helmet!  Thanks so much for doing this loser for me Tommy, I really appreciate it!

I had similar problems with them, and fixed them, but possibly didn't upload the right(ie fixed) versions...I'll check, and if necessary upload 2-pack versions (ie both FF and preconverted FFV3R versions in the same package).

Pretty much like Archangel in XML2 (I didn't do them, so I'm a bit vague), though I believe someone else was doing an Angel set of powers where winds replace blade throws etc. The powerset I'm using isn't quite right for him, but its better than nothing.
Go to:
http://marvelmods.com/forum/index.php
for more Mods, skins etc. I particularly recommend HeroSelect. It lets you add loads of characters without losing any, you select who you want from a GUI list before you play, then those are the characters in game. Then if you want you can revert to the original cast next time with one mouse click. Or have it select a random roster from all your installed character mods.

That heroselect looks awesome but it still sounds like a lot of work.  Is it a matter of downloading the mods to a file or do you have to go trough that trouble of overwriting existing characters?
Title: Re: Tommyboys meshes, new releases.
Post by: tommyboy on August 30, 2007, 09:19:22 AM
Heroselect can be a bit hard to grasp at first.
It works like this:
You have your Mod, which consists of a number of files that go in different places (ie mesh/skin, talent file, powerset, FX, voice, icons and packages). Most Mods come with most or all these files and you just need to unzip them into the game directory (checking the readmes etc to see that you arent overwriting anything you havent backed up.
Most Mods now do not overwrite any existing files (N.B. NOT a guarantee).
So, having installed all the files you then open up a file in the Heroselect directory called "Herostat.cfg". You copy into this file the information required by the Herostat (almost always supplied with a Mod as a .txt file) You add aname directly above this entry, you add that name to a names list at the top of the file. Then save herostat.cfg.
Now you can run heroselect, use the "add" button to add the character you just edited into herostat.cfg, and they should appear on the list of selectable characters in Heroselect, below the listed default characters. Just choose up to 27 characters from your list of hundreds (potentially), hit the "accept team" button and then run the game.
No characters are overwritten, and you can change back to the default characters at the press of a button in heroselect.
It's not the perfect solution (which would be to be able to choose from hundreds of characters WITHIN the game). But for now its the best way to play custom character Mods.
The instructions that come with heroselect explain most of the above, and the author answers any reasonable question at the MarvelMods forums.

It can be a bit of a pain having to set up the characters (and it is to install custom character Mods any other way in MUA), but once they are in Heroselect and working, thats it, thats all you need to do.

So thats:
1 Download and install Mod
2. Edit herostat.cfg and save.
3. Run heroselect. Choose team, save, run game.

Once a mod is setup you just:
1.Run heroselect. Choose team, save, run game.

This sounds like the perfect solution. It sounds almost like Freedom Force.  Unzip the mesh and skin to the right directory. This is what I have been waiting for.  Now I can pick and choose any of your mods without have to override others.

One more question do I still have to restart to the beginning of the game everytime I choose a new character?

Yes, probably. Because of the way the savedgames are structured if you add new characters the saves become invalid. If you revert to the roster you had when you saved (ie the 25-27 characters) , I imagine it would work.

Thanks for the Hawkeye_tf Tommyboy, because now I can finally get around to skoping Green Arrow.

And after looking at those Hawkeye and Angel MUA meshes, this is the first time that I actually regret not getting into that game.

I've just uploaded updated Granny_goodness_tf and Stompa_tf, updated in that they now include both FF and pre-nifconverted FFV3R versions. Sorry for the delay.
Hopefully this should cure the problems people have had with them in FFV3R.

Tommy, are you still doing all of your own skins on these?  If so, you are really improving, my friend.  Those are fantastic!  Especially the Black Knight and Hulk sets.  The meshes look great, as always, and I am particularly excited about the Black Knight.  He's always been a favorite of mine!

I'll try to whip up an FF Marvel_boy_tf as soon as I can.

As for the skins, all my own work except Marvel Boy (a C6 base skin with everything else by me), and Hulk(Joe Fixit) which is based off the Xbox 360 DLC skins face, with everything else being mine..

Hey Tommy, I apologize for being a nitpick but are you still gonna update your World War Hulk mesh?  I kinda encountered two problems, when he carries objects, it's not in the center as well as his ramming melee attack (forgot which melee that one), it's not aligned to the center as well, I'll try to grab a screenie soon, kinda hard to elaborate. :(

It's possible, but will be a while till I get to him.
Bear in mind he WONT have the feet discs in-flight unless you sort that out yourself.
(And no, I'm not going to work out how-to and then tell you, sorry..my hint would be that Silver Surfer may be the place to start looking)
I'll make a mesh and skin that you could use with another martial artists' powerset (ie Elektra's), but I dont want to make the whole Mod.

Heres a 3-pack of Mannequins:
Angel(classsic),
Cyclops(astonishing)
Nightcrawler(skin by Iammingy)

And how they look as playables:

N.B. Angel is a mannequin Only. To get the playable version download my Angel 5-pack. Nightcrawler is included with both a mannequin and playable version (the difference being the tail is hidden on the playable to make room for the bolt-on tail the game uses). Cyclops can be used as a Mannequin or a playable.
And by "playable" I mean "goes in Actors as well as in Mannequins".

Its because the male_basic.tga has an alpha layer. It doesn't show up in ctool1, but does in ctool2.
Either delete it, or make it all-black,

I only have the GIMP and it doesn't give me the option to separate the alpha layer from the .tga file included with the mesh.  At least I can't see that it does.  Thanks anyway.

The plan was to release her as part of the E2:Elseworlds at War Mod, but since that seems perma-stalled, I'll see if I can either bring myself to work on it, or release the meshes within it that have yet to be released..

Here's an updated version of the Hulk, with shorter arms, and a couple of new skins.
The pack comes with 7 skins:
Green, Grey, Original, DLC_kittbash, Fixit, Planet_hulk, WWhulk(not shown)
I recommend using the 110_supersoldier.igb (renamed, of course, as his basic animation set, as the run animation looks better).

Not as far as I know.
As a Moderator there, and as one of the only people making meshes for the game, I've taken a hard line on kittbashing in general, and especially uncredited theft from other games.
So if there ARE kittbashes out there, they are on some other site, and not in the "mainstream" of the MUA Modding community.

It WAS suggested by someone that "we" could use freedom force skins, and there is now a programme (dx 3dripper) that can actually capture geometry and textures from within any DX9 game, so the possibilities are there, but as a community we are trying to build a culture of "do it yourself" rather  than "steal it from others".
If you give people enough stuff of good enough quality, I believe they are less inclined to steal.
Besides, even kittbashing for MUA requires lots of effort, which also dissuades people I believe.

They are exported with FF exporters so will work with FF.
BUT....should also work with FFV3R, though some may need Nifconversion (I use EZ Nifconverter):

Heres something I've been working on since August, inbetween other stuff:
Mr_Fantastic_tf:

9 different bodies, over 40 melee animations, choice of Dodges, runs etc, and some stuff I haven't seen anyone else try, I'm quite pleased with this.
You could also use this for Plastic Man and/or the Elongated Man, though I do plan to make variants for them (Plas will basically be the same but with added goggles, and Ralph will have an added wiggling nose animation, as and when I get around to them).

Reed now resides at:

I know if you rename it tumble it can be used as the animation a tumble special move.  and i just tried to rename other run animations sprint and special_sprint  but they weren't selectable as animations for sprint.  only run is allowed I believe.

Has anyone else tried, or had any success with other keyframe naming, to get selectable animations for the special powers??

Google:
Tower Comics, T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents, Dynamo.
A comic company in the 60s that tried to compete with Marvel and DC. They had Wally Wood, Gil Kane and other notables working for them.

And yes, Firebrand will get finished at some point.

More or less. They derive from those on my Doc_Strange_tf mesh, but remade with cuffs.

Nice Piper - it opens the possibility of Mal Duncan as either Hornblower or Harald.

Still slooooowly making Pied Pipers. Heres the 'classic' version (you'll have to ignore the fact that both flute and pipe are visible, I need to animate them and these are just placeholders):

Tommy I wanted to thank you alot for working on the Pied Piper. I know I had requested it as I am sure others have as well. It looks awesome my friend. Makes me glad I have come back to skinning. Your stuff is always top of the line. I tried hexing a pied piper myself and had little success with the annimations. Oh yeah, DocChallenger I also hexed a Mal Duncan as Herald. So when Tommy gets the pipers done. We should have anouther version of old Mal D to kick around. Again Tommy these look great and I'll be looking really forward to getting my hands on them.

Yes, I've been extruding the holster top to give a flap effect, as the holster is a 'closed' one, not an 'open' one. It just looks better than my lazily skinned original version.

Nice mesh.

tommyboy, i just put FFvTR, FFX3.2, etc., on my new computer and finally got around to downloading Pied Piper, Flash_tf, and a few others.  I think your tf meshes are great and your animations are clever.  I do think you are becoming a much better animator, and Flash_tf and Pied Piper are good examples of that.  Pied Piper in particular is a very fun mesh.  Your skinning is coming along very nicely.  I love the '60s Power Man.  So, thanks for all you do!

I think that there are some people, in this community, that we can't thanks enough. Tommy is one of this. He is so prolific that every meshes is an unexpected surprise. And, most important, his work seems to be concentrate in the minor character that other meshers don't make. With all the respect for all others meshes (for example, the Dynamic duo Ren/C6: every works of them is a Christmas gift and a pure piece of ludic art9), I think that Tommy is a Mesh Machine within comparision.

P.s: But what is this, the Golden Age of :ffvstr: ? But none go to holidays? Ren's Hulkmania (my standard), the new Tommy mesh, the return of £d master and Wingzero...If Vertex make a new VX peice of art, I think that we must explode...

Despite the darkness, you might be able to make out its a moonscape. At the moment its just a flat plane with 20-30 craters, the texture isn't well mapped, and the craters are barely visible, but It Works.
So, anyone following this thread, any Map Requests? (and lets try not to be too ambitious here..)

Sweet!  I hope it's insanely large, i always felt that the maps were too small for truly cosmic battles.

it would be nice if you could include your sky spheres directly into the terrain.nif
did you see how Ink made his Galactus World map.  it's got a sphere encircling it, so you get a nice background

I hope there will be lots of moon rocks to throw.  Various sizes of rocks would be cool, too.

How about a grand, epic, soaring night city?  Like a cross between the Gotham City and Highrise maps.

It's pretty big, probably as big as the largest city map is, maybe a bit bigger..
I'm trying to include skyspheres, and believe it should be possible, but my first tries were unsuccessful. Since they can be added in the editor or NifSkope it wouldn't be the end of the world if I couldn't do it, but I definitely want to.

Oa may be a bit ambitious, bearing in mind its a megacity on an alien planet with architecture entirely unlike anything in the game. Something may be possible, but I don't want to have to make lots and lots of custom buildings just now. A few, maybe, but not a lot.
Giant Power Battery could be meshed or 'skoped easy enough though.

Yes, there will be moon rock to jump on or throw.
My initial idea was to actually make a sphere rather than a plane to stand on, and it looks really cool, but as you move away from the 'top' of it, you fall off of it, as it has no gravity of its own. But maybe an asteroid field or Saturns Rings or somesuch could use a few of them with smaller chunks to hop between them on.

Another idea I had is something lifted from the Hulk game, where various Marvel landmarks and buildings form part of Manhattan (the Baxter building, Doc Stranges House, Stark *ptui* Tower, Lavterian Embassy, etc etc). I think a Free Roam patriot City type collection of maps approximating marvels new york might be fun to play in. You might start out in the Xmen school in westchester, or the Avengers Mansion, and see the frightful four attacking the Baxter Building and have to stop them trashing it. Or team up with PowerMan and iron fist in Times Square. Of course immediately someone might suggest a DC equivalent but the trouble is many DC heroes have their 'own' city, so you'd have to ignore that if you wanted DC landmarks all in one big city. Again, it's maybe overambitious, but the idea appeals.

I think some obvious candidates are Other Planets, Underwater maps and Atlantae (marvel and DC), perhaps some more uneven terrain than is the norm, slopes, valleys, that sort of thing.

Anyway, keep the ideas coming please.
I'm in the very early stages (literally got a map to work today for the first time ever), so the first few will be basic and/or suck, but if nothing else I should be able to make some bigger playgrounds...

I'd been toying with that idea forever. My problem was that I just don't have the 3d chops to do it easily, so my map attempts would always get tweaked out in game because of some geometry issue that screwed with the camera movement or pathfinding (granted i was always trying to do something more creative i.e. complicated than a flat plane). And buildings I love -- I can never have enough buildings, but I'm not good at doing the destruction models and I feel like a solid building that cant be destroyed, or one that just disappears is truly a sub par building.

In any event, With your meshing skillset I'm hoping to see you work out some interesting stuff that I never could...

The sphere idea I love BTW and is exactly the kind of thing I would have tried and gone... cool... oh... damn... nevermind....

I think the cyrus pinkney's buildings of gotham would be really hard to make... so that leaves that city out for now....

but the new york idea seems really great.. maybe a generic version and a marvel one... and a dc one would just need titans tower i think

Thanks

I have considered them, but it would be hard to add anything to them that isn't already available, either in existing meshes, or in fx/ffx.
Consequently, I've never had a burning need to mesh Sue or Johnny. Yet.

Not bad ideas, but anyone with the Editor could make that happen (assuming you had suitable buildings), using the LevelEditor and some creative re-skinning.
I do want to do something Asgardian at some point, and both greek and egyptian architecture are appealing to me, too.

Now, much to the annoyance of anyone awaiting my Megamap project, instead of doing that, I've been doing this:

Iron_man_MK20_tf
Changelog: Now on a '_tf' mesh (ie a mesh with fingers).
Better mapping, I hope.
Improved several bits of the geometry to fit better, made sure there is less clipping and everything that should be seen is.
New keyframes with flying_melees included.
New keyframes include in-flight bootjets.
Updated and I hope, improved the standard skin.

Geometry all by me.
Skin by me (though I did pretty much trace Granov on the torso)
Animations by Grenadier, except those by me. (Mine are the 'special_a to _m' and flying_melees, and melee_7-11, and the bootjet stuff, some ranged anims.

I have a question for you, sir.  I thought I'd take your new Iron Man Mk. 20 keyframes and stick them with your fairly new Iron Man Mk. 5 mesh.  It didn't work.  I realize I could use Nifskope to make it work, but what I'd really like to know is why the Mk. 20 kf's don't work with the Mk. 5 mesh?  Is there something different between the meshes that the keframes are referencing?  I'm woefully ignorant when it comes to the construction of meshes and I've always wanted to know.

Thanks!

The Mk20 has bootjets. That's probably enough to stop it working with any mesh that hasn't. I'll try to get to an updated MK5_tf at some point.

OK, so the latest version of NifSkope can add a bumpmap to any part of any mesh.
Some of you will remember this from way back when, it turned out much too shiny, and was quickly abandoned.
But by playing with various values, and the skins themselves I've gotten it to work a little better.
I'm uploading a Proof-of-concept pack featuring bumpmap enabled versions of my Cap_america_tf_bump, IM_mk21_tf_bump, and Thing_bumpy.
Pics just cannot do it justice, as you really need to see the effect in Ctool or in-game to appreciate that it's there at all, but here are some pics anyway:
Now, it's a long way from perfect, in several ways:
1. There is still shinyness. On any bumpmap enabled mesh, though this can be toned down. For Caps shirt and shield, or Iron Man's Armour, the shinyness is not such an issue. You may feel that the Thing should not be reflective at all. There may be no way around this. You have to have a slight reflect layer to get it to show the bumps.
2. The bumpmap for the standard skin tends to be used for all non-standard skins, even if they have their own bumpmaps. No way round this for now, that I know of..but I've only been playing with it today, so who knows.

On the plus side, ANY mesh can be bumpmapped, be it for FF or FFv3R, though I found I had to tweak the settings differently for each game. It takes about 30 seconds to do in nifskope, though a mesh like IM_MK21_tf with lots of separate bits takes longer. The quality of the bumpmaps is up to you. You can use Normalmapping, or just rename standard male_basic if you are pushed for time.
I'll post the nifskope settings I've used in the next few days, in a mini tutorial, but from what I've seen, there is much scope for experimentation, as there is with the normal maps themselves.

The pack of three bumpmap-enabled meshes can be found here:

Well, it does and it doesn't support it. You can get it to show up, but usually with a great deal of shinyness.
And for the most part, you aren't zoomed in enough to appreciate bumpmapped scales on caps shirt. But it adds to what we can do. It might be nice on backgrounds, brick walls, that sort of thing.

Yeah def, even in other gamebryo games, they're not used on characters nearly as much as walls(oblivion springs to mind). And um it was overly shiny in oblivion too, so this doesn't seem all that bad at all.

Although the default FF exporter lets you export with "bump" ticked and a map in place, it doesn't actually export the mash with the bumpmapping in it. If there's a way of doing it, I haven't found it yet.
Maybe the niftools exporter might let you do it, or maybe theres some way with the ffv3r exporters, but to date the only way to bumpmap is to nifskope the bumpmap into the mesh, as far as I know.

The "gaunlets" or whatever they're supposed to bloody be, have no ridges per the mesh, but part of the effect is due to courtnall's lovely texturing.
Can you "black out" sections of the map as with glow and reflect or does the entire mesh piece have to be bumped?
Title: Re: Tommyboys meshes, new releases.

Like Tommyboy I'm pretty confident the standard exporters don't cover this. In fact the FF documentation claims that Bump maps aren't implemented. I've interpreted this as '...in the exporter'. Obviously not in the actual 4.0.0.2 format.

Dunno is the honest answer, partly because I'm not sure what you are asking.
The way bumpmaps are supposed to work is that the "height" is determined by light and dark on the bumpmap, with lighter being "up", (I think) and darker being "down" (or vice versa), and grey being "normal" height. But because of the weird interaction between our bumpmaps and the reflect maps, I'd hazard a guess that if you have a black area on the _refl map, you would have no bumpmapping.
But if say you only want a ridge around an arm you would delineate that ridge with a very light and dark part then have the rest of the arm in grey.
There is a play-off between reflection(gloss) and these bump-maps, in that they aren't "true" bumpmaps, which are independent of gloss levels.

Gotcha mate, just realized how confusingly I phrased it- What I meant was that the mesh itself had no ridges, meaning the ridges in the pic are from bump mapping, which would make it a success. Well partially, since it's still not obvious enough especially when perpendicular. I'll try darkening/lightening it. The blacking out question was completely seperate, I was wondering whether each "editable mesh" had to be entirely bumped or sections could be "turned off" via blacking. As I understand it now, you would black the areas in _refl instead, or grey it in _bump. although how grey is a grey area?(pun intended).

Cheers

In most paint progs you get a colour select tool that has gradations between black and white. The grey in the middle I'd suggest as neutral height, but there is no 'right' or 'wrong', just what works and looks good, and I'm still finding that out myself.
Since you're an Xmen fan, I'd suggest starting with Colossus. All metal arms, clear ridges, as much gloss as you please, he's made for this. Judging by what I've seen with bumpmapped Iron Man mesh/skins, Petey should look awesome with bumps enabled.
In fact I'll do him myself tomorrow as it's getting late here.

Hmm, ok go right ahead, I wouldn't want to steal your idea. Is it just me, or does the bumpmap really tone down the gloss map? Even with 100% opacity, my meshes are only nearly as shiny as they were sans bumpity at less than 50%. I imagine that would pose quite the problem for the big russian. This is a pretty mental development for skinners though, now everone can make the meshes seem to be abit of their own. I'm gonna try and see if this can simulate fingers(a bit of an ask init)

The bumpmaps interact with the gloss(_refl) maps, in a way I don't quite understand.
What I do know:
No _refl (ie an all black refl texture)= No Bumps at all.
On some meshes the bumpmapping seems to enhance the shineyness, on others it can seem to tone it down. There are a lot of variables in the values you can use for either map, and values within the mesh itself that can be altered with nifskope which when altered will change the appearance. Also in FF, bumpmapping seems to add much gloss, but in ffv3r it tends to tone it right down.
I don't know what adding alpha layers to either or bothe _refl or _bump will do.
I did a test on Colossus, and it worked OK, but the bump-skin wasn't right for a really good effect, and since neither mesh nor skin are mine, I wont release or show it. Suffice to say it looked better with the bumpmapping than without. But could look better still.
It's very early days, and in many ways the game engine does not support it properly, as there are costs as well as benefits to it.
Trial and error is the only way forward.

Have you tried using a Normal Map instead of a bump map in that channel?

Have you tried using a Normal Map instead of a bump map in that channel?

You've kind of lost me.
Partly because I only sort of know what I'm talking abut here, so bear with me whilst I try to define what I understand as those terms, and how I might possibly interpret the question.
Bump-map= a monochrome texture used to provide "height" in the rendering process.
Normal-map= a multi-channel texture where x,y, and z information is stored in the channels, and can have been derived from a more detailed version of the lower poly model it will be applied to.
I hope I've understood those correctly, one of the perils of being self-taught is the danger of missing some very basic information, or worse, misunderstanding it entirely, so if I'm wrong, please let me know.

So, in one answer to the question (I hope), I generally take a male_basic.tga and run it through the nvidia "normal map" filter in photoshop to generate what I then save as male_basic_bump.tga. I can grey-scale this and the result is the same, implying to me that the pseudo-bumpmapping is not fussy about the source.
If you meant have I chosen 'normal' rather than 'bump' to add to the mesh in nifskope, I don't think that I can do that. If that's possible I don't know how.
And of course the ff exporters wont export bumpmaps or normals, to the best of my knowledge.

But, and it's a big but, I'm really working from a position of ignorance, blind luck and guesswork here, and anyone more knowledgeable than I should step in and sort the wheat from the chaff.

I'm gonna completely agree and sympathize with tommyboy (only with even less knowledge), I didn't think that the nif format (or the game engine itself) supported Normal Maps.

So after doing a little playing around (and some posts about nif files on Morrowind forums) I think I may have figured out the "Shiny" issue with bumpmaps -- or else Im nuts)

Its a two step thing.

1. The Bump map texture is tied to alpha. So give the bump map texture an Alpha Channel. My tests were done just creating an all black alpha channel, then using a 50% grey one with the Thing Mesh by Tommyboy.
Black=No Shinyness
White= Full Shiny

2.  In Nifskope go to the NiTexturing>NiSourceTexture for the bump tga file and select it. In the options for the texture go to PixelLayout and set it to "Pix_Lay_Bumpmap"

And thats it.
I'll be curious if it works for others, or whether i am just crazy.

VERY interesting. That makes them substantially more useful. I found when I played with this long ago that the benefit of the quasi-bump map was often negated by the inherent visual gloss effect. You sound like you have the answer.

I played around with the various nifskope pixel layout options last night, including "pix_lay_bumpmap", but I cannot replicate a lack of shine following your instructions. Of course, I've messed around with so much in that mesh that its entirely possible thats the reason. So I'll rdownload my thing mesh again and start over.
I do hope that you are right, but it seems to me unlikely that if there was an option to have working non-shiny bumpmaps in either game that Irrational would have chosen not to use it, or that they would have been unaware of it.

Nope, I downloaded the thing file that you are using, so we start in the same place.
Which is as in the pic below, a slightly shiny bumpmapped thing.

I change PixelLayout and set it to "Pix_Lay_Bumpmap" in nifskope and save, and get this:
A slightly shinier bumpmapped thing. I've set the _refl to all black, and added a black alpha layer to the bumpmap (and a white one, and one derived from the skin, and the results are all the same).
The change to Pix_lay_bumpmap does seem to free the bumpmapping from the need to have a _refl layer in order to show up, but I'm still seeing it as shiny, no matter my settings.
Any chance you could upload your altered mesh and skin for me to see?
It could be some difference in our respective hardware or directx files (I install lots of shaders and drivers and whatnot as I fiddle with various games). So I want to see if when I look at the files you look at, I get the same thing.

I've had similar results to tommy, Pix_Lay_Bumpmap seem to ignore the refl layer completely and bumps(lol) everything up to Max shinyness.

OH, I should probably specify that I've been looking at the mesh in Ctool, NOT Ctool2. I'll try playing with it in ctool2 now.
Title: Re: Tommyboys meshes, new releases.
Post by: tommyboy on October 23, 2008, 06:57:48 AM
Hmmm...in ctool2, you still need something other than an all-black _refl layer, (even with the Pix_lay_bumpmap value set), or no bumpmap info is displayed.
This differs from Ctool, where pix_lay_bumpmap seems to sever the connection between _refl and _bump.
I don't know what that means or implies, but it's worth noting.
And since you have to have a _refl layer to see the bumps in ctool2, obviously they are still shiny rather than matt, as they should be in true bumpmapping.

Not a stupid question at all.
By adding a bumpmap.tga, you are adding one more file to the skin. The size of that file is of course dependent on how much info you want in there, it could be 64x64 or 2048x2048, with or without an alpha layer etc. It's no different to adding a refl, or glow, or for that matter an _extras type map. Bear in mind that if you wanted to bumpmap all the bits on one of my meshes that use zemo_bits, strangefate_bits etc, you'd need to create an extra _bump texture for each of those. If it's just a male_basic mesh, only male_basic_bump.tga would be added.
As with all parts of a skin, the artist must decide to playoff the extra detail a larger filesize can give against the fact that massive textures have a cost in framerate for those without ninja computers.
Because bumpmapping tends to be about adding details not found in the actual mesh geometry, I tend towards using bumpmaps as big as the standard male_basic, ie 512x512, typically. But if it looks good with a smaller sized file, it doesn't have to be as big as the diffuse map.

The information itself is around half of a kb each ;)

So here is the thing with an alpha on the bump map set to all white:

And here is the thing with an alpha on the bump map set to all black:

This is the display in Ctool2. However, there is one caveat, in that unlike other skin changes where you can click away from the character and back again to get the updated skin, you actually have to close ctool and reopen it to see any of the alpha changes.

Also, Just to cover bases, when you add the alpha channel, the TGA needs to be saved in 32 bit not 24...

Here is tommyboys modified thing mesh I saved for comparison.

Thanks for uploading that, it's clarified it for me.
I was actually getting the same results but had mistaken your post to have read that you got rid of the glossiness and had functioning bumpmapping. Which is not what I'm seeing. I'm seeing what I got when I did it myself, that the black alpha layer makes both the gloss and the bumpiness go away. Which is all extra info.
I've been doing a bit of Oblivion Modding and meshing on the side, and since it uses nif files too, it may shed some light on what we are seeing. In Oblivion the mesh is exported with only a diffuse layer (the equivalent of just a male_basic.tga) set up in 3dsmax. No gloss or bumpmap is setup in Max. And that diffuse texture is stored in the 'textures' dir, along with another texture called "nameoftexture_n.dds" that is a bumpmap (or normal map, I still hardly know which is which) with the gloss/refl information stored in the alpha channel. Sounds familiar, does it not? The link twixt gloss and bumps, I mean.
As long as there is a correctly saved and named "_n.dds" texture the game engine automatically applies the bumps and gloss to the mesh. If you open up an oblivion .nif in nifskope, it tells you there is only a diffuse(or 'base') map, that there is no bump or gloss or glow setup within the file.
I throw this out there not because I know what it implies, but collectively or individually someone else might.

Back in Freedom force Land, we are still dealing with bumpmaps best suited to shiny/metallic type characters/objects, who typically will have only a 'standard' skin, as the bumps will only be aligned with that skin, at least in ctool. In-game, things may work out better for multiple skins/bumpmaps.

I hope it isn't as irritating with node-culling as Morrowind. I just love the way Morrowind reads up a gloss map and then (seemingly) discards it as useless!

There's also a "pat_park_fountain_water_bump.dds" indicating that at some point they thought or intended for bumpmapping to be included. I think some of the pre-game publicity mentioned it as one of the new features in the Gamebryo engine. I guess it never got implemented fully in the end...

Nah he not actually bumped, they just left the texture in there. Likely just like all the other ones tommy talked about. I dunno how off-topic this is, but how do you add a gloss map(or "refl" as this community hails it)? The way I figure it's related by a thin thread is that bump maps need a gloss map to work. Fancy that. :)

Another Quickly Executed Release:

The smaller antrider on the right of the pic shows the size relative to his 'fully grown' ie normal size, the lefthand antrider is simply so you can see a bit of detail on the ant.
Obviously it's much, much too big, but an actual ant sized and and rider would be effectively invisible, so he is the size he is, to give you some chance of actually finding him in-game.

looks good Tommy. Hows it compare to TJ's flying ant. Can't check until I get home.

Heres TJ's, with the flying version at the same 'magnification' in ctool as the normal sized idle.

And heres mine with the same sized comparison (assume that both full sized figures are the same height);
So you can see his is much larger than mine.
I also included Irrational's Worker ant (top left) since that is what TJ's appears to be based on, to my eyes.
So mine has a much smaller ant/rider his ant is about 1/3 the length of the full size man, mine is approx 1/8, my ant is dissimilar to the in-game ones made by Irrational, TJ's ant looks very similar or may actually be one of them.
His mesh has slightly more animations than mine, and they are probably better executed than the animation bits I did (most of my kfs here are vanilla male_basic Irrational kfs with some shrinking added).
Other than that, I cannot say how they compare, his was a trail-blazing never before seen effort, mine is a sloppily executed bodge of someone else's ideas.
Mine has bigger wings...

Was just asking about the size, I like the smaller ant. I wonder if I can hex down TJ's...

Very happy to have this mesh. Always wanted one.

Nice work Tommy. I like the mesh, but I think you really should be proud of the skin as well.
